Spring Valley Farm and Heath Jerseys awarded the 2023 McKown Master Breeder Award

For almost 100 years, the Jersey breed has been the cornerstone of Spring Valley Farm in Westminster, Maryland. The farm is owned and run by Allen and Wayne Stiles, third generation dairymen, and includes their nephew Michael Heath until his untimely death earlier this year. The Klussendorf Association chose them as this year’s winner of the Robert “Whitey” McKown Master Breeder Award in recognition of their hard work and achievement. This coveted prize recognizes outstanding breeders who have had success displaying and judging cattle. Character, ability, ambition, and sportsmanship are traits connected with the Klussendorf prize.

The Spring Valley herd began modestly when Wayne and Allen’s grandpa, N.C. Stiles, a Holstein breeder, acquired his first Jersey in 1924 to increase butterfat content in order to protect his milk market. The farm now has 120 head of Jersey cattle. Pleasant Valley Prime Heather, E-96; Edgeview Renaissance Jane, E-96; and Pinesmith TJ Mindy, E-94 are among the exceptional Jersey animals owned by the family. Some of these high-caliber maternal lines, such as SV Jade Hired Gun-ET and Chilli Action Colton-ET, have had an impact in breeding programs via their sons.

Michael Heath, Allen and Wayne’s nephew, did not keep his unrivaled eye or expertise for cattle to himself while working as a cattle merchandizer. While he owned cows from several notable Jersey and Holstein cow lines, he also assisted others by locating “diamonds in the rough” and developing them into extremely desirable animals. Heath was a certified cattle promoter who started organizing sales in the 1980s. He had just collaborated with Nathan and Jenny Thomas to produce the Triple-T and Heath sale. In a top-averaging auction, their efforts increased the value of registered animals.

The family’s success did not end with breeding and improving cattle; it extended into the showring. The Stiles and Heath families have appeared in the Maryland State Fair, World Dairy Expo, All-American Jersey events, and all 50 All-American Dairy events. In the previous 70 years, their love for displaying cattle has resulted in hundreds of champions, as well as Premier Breeder and Exhibitor banners. The farm has shown the Junior Champion in 1983 and 1986, Grand Champion in 1993, Best Bred and Owned in 2019, Reserve Grand Champion in 2020, and more than a dozen All-Americans or Reserve All-Americans at the National Jersey Show.

The Spring Valley family’s eye for fine cattle was later put to use by judging them. Wayne, Allen, their two brothers, their father John, and Michael have all been part of the Maryland State 4-H dairy judging team for generations. Wayne has judged the Jersey exhibit at the Eastern States Exposition, as well as the Holstein Spring Shows in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Michael has judged cattle at the local, state, and international levels, such as the World Dairy Expo Holstein, Jersey, and Milking Shorthorn Shows, the Canadian National Jersey Show, the Royal Ulster Show in Ireland, the Mexican National Holstein Show, and the Quebec International Fall Holstein Show, to name a few. He distinguished himself as a judge by employing unique reasoning phrases to describe the classifications. Heath was characterized as a wonderful buddy with an unrivaled drive and enthusiasm for cattle. He had a reputation for seeing more promise in animals and people than anybody else.

In 1962, Wayne and Allen’s father, John Stiles, inspired the family’s strong support for 4-H and youth initiatives by asking the Maryland 4-H dairy cow judging team to train on the farm. Since then, the brothers have sponsored an annual practice for youngsters from around the state, as well as the Maryland Judging School. John also ensured that adolescents in his neighborhood had access to the same opportunities as his own children, often packing a trailer with project animals and included them in the Spring Valley showstring for free.

The family continues to assist their community in leadership capacities in their leisure time. Wayne, Allen, and Allen’s wife Kay are all former Maryland Jersey Cattle Club presidents. Allen has spent 40 years as the county dairy judging coach and assisting with the Carroll County 4-H and FFA dairy show. He is the president of the Maryland State Grange and chaired the Agriculture Committee at the National Grange Session. Kay is a National Grange official at the moment.

The Stiles and Heath families have achieved significant success in various areas of the dairy business throughout the years. They have not, however, forgotten the value of aiding others around them. Their devotion to the Jersey breed and the dairy business has won Spring Valley Farms and Heath Jerseys the McKown Master Breeder Award for 2023.

Quebec Holstein Youth wins the 2023 Merle Howard Award

Savannah Crack was selected the 19th Merle Howard Award winner on Friday, October 6, at the 56th World Dairy Expo. Crack joined 4-H at a young age and started learning crucial life skills like duty and accountability. As her 4-H career progressed, she was given the chance to participate in the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic at the Royal Winter Fair. The Richmond, Quebec native was also chosen for Holstein Quebec’s Ecole de Preparation, a three-day program that includes theoretical and practical courses on exhibit displays, fitting and trimming, nutritional requirements during shows, and showmanship abilities. She was also one of just six Canadians to attend the European Young Breeders School, which was held in Belgium and drew participants from 19 nations across the world.

This Holstein juvenile shines in both the barn and the showring throughout her exhibiting career. She has won four major showmanship contests on both the Canadian and American sides of the border. Crack has been attending World Dairy Expo youth contests for eight years and is a two-time showmanship champion, having won the Junior Showmanship Contest in 2015. The following year, he duplicated the feat by winning the Intermediate Showmanship category on colored shavings.

California Holstein Breeder Wins the 2023 Klussendorf Award

During the 56th World Dairy Expo, Joey Airoso of Pixley, Calif., received the 81st Klussendorf Award, the highest honor awarded to a dairy cow showman in the United States. Airoso has all of the characteristics of former Klussendorf victors, including character, sportsmanship, ability, and ambition.

The prize is named after Arthur B. Klussendorf, who was regarded as an excellent showman of his day and a role model for everyone who came after him. The Klussendorf Memorial Association, founded in 1937, announced this year’s pick during its annual conference earlier this week in Madison, Wis. Airoso got the silver trophy created by Tiffany Jewelers of New York City.

Airoso is a fourth-generation dairyman who oversees one of the biggest Registered Holstein herds in the country. He is the managing partner of a family farm in California’s Central Valley that milks 2,600 cows and crops 1,600 acres of alfalfa, maize, and wheat. According to nominators Stuart Row, Gilbert Texiera, and Ken Melvold, as well as previous Klussendorf winners, “one would be hard-pressed to find a more popular person showing cattle with his engaging personality and willingness to help anyone in need at a show.”

This Pixley, Calif., native has been showing cattle on the West Coast for almost 60 years and has made multiple journeys east to World Dairy Expo. Over the previous four decades, he has shown multiple All-California winners, a handful of Western National Champions, and several All-American selections. Airoso is a seasoned showman who has received the prestigious Al Hay Award at the Western National Show and was voted the California State Fair Livestock Man of the Year in 2017. Airoso has judged various events around the United States, including the Wisconsin State Fair Junior Holstein Show, North America’s biggest Holstein show.

Airoso, a huge supporter of kids, was a vital servant leader who stood up to achieve a victory when the Western Livestock Show was canceled in 2012 owing to a lack of financing from the State of California. Not wanting to see the Western Classic Dairy Show go, Airoso and other members of the South Joaquin Holstein Association came through to save it. The event, now held yearly in Tulare, California, has grown to become the state’s biggest junior dairy cow show, attracting over 300 head displayed by 200 juniors aged five to 21.

The Klussendorf Award was created to honor people who demonstrate character, sportsmanship, and devotion to dairy cow events. Joey Airoso has all of these qualities, which is why he was chosen as the 81st Klussendorf winner.

The Klussendorf Memorial Association, widely regarded as the Hall of Fame for dairy cattle exhibitors, was founded in 1937 in remembrance of Arthur B. Klussendorf, widely regarded as the greatest dairy cow showman of his time. Each year, the Klussendorf Association votes to add a new dairy cow exhibitor to its registers, awarding them lifelong membership in recognition of their contributions.

Ohio Dairyman Wins the Klussendorf-MacKenzie Award

During World Dairy Expo® 2023, Nathan Thomas of North Lewisburg, Ohio, received the 32nd Klussendorf-MacKenzie Award in honour of Duncan MacKenzie, the 1961 Klussendorf winner. While this year’s Klussendorf-MacKenzie prize recipient has a remarkable dairy resume, it is crucial to emphasize that Thomas epitomizes the characteristics that made Duncan MacKenzie the award’s forefather.

Despite not growing up on a dairy farm, this year’s MacKenzie winner’s grandpa maintained numerous well-known Guernsey herds, and his uncle also had a dairy herd. With those dairy-farming cousins always in his sights, a young Nathan Thomas pestered his father until he could afford to buy a grade heifer to display at the county fair.

Thomas continued to enhance the type and conformation of his cattle once that foundation was formed. This Ohio native started working at various exhibits and sales throughout high school, including assisting Wayne Sliker of Modern Associates. With his high school graduation in hand, Thomas hit the road to fit cattle for numerous prominent show strings around the United States, as well as overseas in Canada, Mexico, Australia, Italy, Spain, and Colombia. Rider Jerseys, Exels Holsteins, Maple-Lawn, Air-Osa Dairy, Spring Valley Jerseys, Elmvue Farm, and Vierra Dairy, who has exhibited the Grand Champion at World Dairy Expo’s International Jersey Show for the past four years, are among the farms he has worked with throughout the years.

Thomas and his family have been dairy farmers at Triple-T Holsteins and Jerseys in North Lewisburg, Ohio, for the last 16 years. The farm is owned by Thomas and Jenny, as well as Nathan’s father, John, and brother, Andy. During that period, Triple-T has bred, produced, marketed, and cared for over 130 All-American and All-Canadian nominations, as well as holding the best BAA or Breed Age Average rating for conformation in the country. Thomas also raised and owned the 2018 Star of the Breed of the Holstein Association USA.

Thomas continues to own cattle with many of the same friends and mentors that helped him get to where he is now. He has also been a mentor to many young individuals who are breaking into the profession. Thomas and his wife, Jenny, together with partner, the late Michael Heath, have overseen multiple sales focused on promoting and selling Jerseys and Holsteins during the last eight years.

Whether it’s the start of the week or a busy show day, Thomas always has an appealing display and a well-organized workforce that is fastidious about every aspect. Thomas would be quick to praise his wife, Jenny, and their three children, Colton, Kendall, and Camryn, for all of their help around the farm.

Magnussen Receives A.C. “Whitie” Thomson Memorial Award

During World Dairy Expo 2023, Norman C. Magnussen of Lake Mills, Wis., received the 2023 A.C. “Whitie” Thomson Memorial Award. Whitie Thomson was well-known in the Showring for his outstanding leadership and sportsmanship. This award is given to a herdsman or showman who exemplifies the qualities that inspired the A.C. “Whitie” Thomson Memorial Award.

Magnussen, Executive Secretary of the Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders Association and a Lake Mills native, has a long relationship with the yearly world-class dairy tournament. His father, Norman E. Magnussen, was one of a few Wisconsin dairymen who pushed for the establishment of what is now World Dairy Expo and was essential in securing financing for its early years. The senior Magnussen organized a fundraising cow auction for the World Food and Agricultural Exposition in the spring of 1969.

After his father’s sudden death, Norman C. Magnussen took over the Brown Swiss Sale Service at the age of 22 and held his first of five national Wisconsin sales that averaged $3,024.43, with the top seller being Norvic Telstar at $17,000. Brown Swiss Sale Service LLC oversaw sales in 17 states, including 16 national sales, for the following 38 years. The globe Premier Brown Swiss Sale, held at World Dairy Expo, usually includes top-of-the-line cattle sought for by breeders all over the globe. While the term “Brown Swiss” may suggest otherwise, this sale administration has sold dairy animals of many breeds.

Norman C. Magnussen has a long experience with the Brown Swiss Breed, from displaying as an early age to judging shows all around the globe. In 1970, he was one of the first Bell Ringers to compete in the Wisconsin Bell Ringer Contest. Here at Expo, he has led several Grand Champions, Reserve Grand Champions, and Junior Champions, including Arbor Rose Strech Spicy, Betta Vue Matt Nadine, 2x Lyndale Convincer Elaine, and Bridge View Jade Katrina. He has judged shows at all levels, including many national and four international competitions.
