World Dairy Expo is pleased to announce that it will remain in Madison, Wisconsin, hosting the global dairy industry at the Alliant Energy Center the first week of October through 2028. A new, five-year contract was signed at the Alliant Energy Center Thursday morning.

World Dairy Expo and Dane County’s Alliant Energy Center formalized an agreement to host the world’s largest dairy event in Madison, Wisconsin, for the next five years. On hand to announce the ongoing partnership were Bill Hageman, President World Dairy Expo Board of Directors; Adam Heffron, Director of Dane County’s Alliant Energy Center; Joe Parisi, Dane County Executive and Laura Herschleb, World Dairy Expo General Manager. Joining the celebration were two Brown Swiss cows from Voegeli Farms, Inc., of Monticello, Wisconsin.

“For 56 years, Madison, Wisconsin has been recognized as the epicenter of the global dairy industry the first week of October,” shares Bill Hageman, WDE Board President. “However, World Dairy Expo is more than a week-long event. The commerce, relationships built and hard work by our staff and volunteers happen year-round and will continue for the years to come.”

Dane County and the Alliant Energy Center have hosted every World Dairy Expo since its inception in 1967. Last year’s event brought an estimated economic impact of $31.8 million in Dane County, attracted over 54,500 attendees from nearly 90 countries and housed over 2,600 of the best dairy cattle in North America.

“From the beginning, valued partnerships have built the foundation that World Dairy Expo stands on today,” states Laura Herschleb, WDE General Manager. “It has and will continue to be about the people coming together to celebrate and grow the global dairy community. Started in September of 2020, The Dairy Show, World Dairy Expo’s podcast, recently celebrated its two-year anniversary. Available on Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, iHeart Radio, Spotify and online at worlddairyexpo.com, new episodes of The Dairy Show are released on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. Expo’s podcast features a new guest on every episode discussing topics related to the global dairy industry.

“As the digital meeting place of the global dairy industry, Expo’s podcast gives listeners a taste of Expo year-round,” shares Katie Schmitt, host of The Dairy Show. “The Dairy Show focuses on a variety of topics ranging from cows to the colored shavings to cutting-edge technology while introducing different guests to provide unique perspectives.”

To date, The Dairy Show’s 50-plus episodes have been downloaded and streamed more than 43,000 times. Listeners span the globe, representing over 110 countries, all 50 US states, and 12 Canadian provinces and territories. Some of The Dairy Show’s most popular episodes include “Judging on the Colored Shavings”, “Fitting and Grooming Dairy Cattle”, “Just Talking Cows” and interviews with the 2020 Expo Recognition Award winners.

Listeners can expect to hear from Mike Duckett of Duckett Holsteins during the next episode. Duckett is one of the caretakes and owners of 2022 WDE Supreme Champion, Oakfield Solom Footloose-ET.

Each year, World Dairy Expo recognizes dairy cattle exhibitor strings with Herdsmanship Awards. Herdsmanship Awards are given to individuals or dairy farms demonstrating exemplary exhibit organization, cleanliness and cooperation with fellow exhibitors and show management. Maple-Leigh Futures of Delavan, Wisconsin, won this year’s Overall Herdsmanship Award, receiving two commemorative chairs and a semen tank, courtesy of Select Sires, Inc. and MVE Biological Solutions, respectively.

World Dairy Expo hosted 672 participating companies during its 55^th event featuring booths of all shapes and sizes. At the conclusion of this year’s event, three booths of varying sizes were recognized with Outstanding Booth Awards, presented by Econoprint. These awards are given to companies or organizations with a strong presentation and promotion of a product, brand or company. Selection criteria includes an overall functional booth, a booth that possesses stopping-power by utilizing theme, design and relevance, and a staff that is approachable and professional.

Companies were split into small, intermediate and large divisions. Winning these respective divisions are Central Life Sciences, inBarn Solutions Inc. and Diamond V.

The 2022 A.C. “Whitie” Thomson Memorial Award was presented to Timothy Coon of Amenia, New York, during World Dairy Expo 2022. Whitie Thomson was known for his exemplary leadership and sportsmanship in the Showring. This honor is awarded to a herdsman or showman that exhibits the same attributes the A.C. “Whitie” Thomson Memorial Award was founded on.

Coon’s roots take him back to his family’s Guernsey farm in eastern New York. His career has spanned time as a hoof trimmer and cattle fitter and working with Hanover Hill Sales and Service, The Cattle Exchange, and the Guernsey Marketing Service. In 1981, his passion for showing dairy cattle was further ignited during his first World Dairy Expo, and he has not missed a show since. Coon worked the World Premiere Sale in 1982 and traveled with Dreamstreet Holsteins under the direction of Budd­­y Fleming the year after where they won Grand, Reserve, and Supreme Champion titles.

The New York native then began heading up the show crew of Lylehaven Holsteins from Montpelier, Vermont. Lylehaven quickly became a household name with numerous World Dairy Expo class winners and All-Americans for cows, heifers, and bulls. In 1995, Coon embarked on a journey with Piedmont Jersey Inc. in Coaticook, Quebec, Canada, who also exhibited a plethora of class winners, All-Americans, and All-Canadians. Specifically, Coon helped prepare Waymar Patrick Nadine EX-97 for two of her Grand Champion Jersey titles at World Dairy Expo.

Upon the turn of the century, Coon initiated his own show string which was made up of descendants of exceptional herds such as Woodmansee, Gage, Millbourne, Coondell, Long Pine, Oblong Valley, and many more. Most recently, the string has consisted of many from Elite Dairy in Copake, New York. In 2018 and 2019, Coon played a vital role in the success of Cutting Edge T Delilah’s titles of Grand and Supreme Champion. For the past two years, Coon has helped develop the Grand Champion Brown Swiss, Cutting Edge Thunder Faye.

Coon is no stranger to receiving accolades such as Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor. In 2015, he was named the Klussendorf-MacKenzie award winner. Despite his numerous accomplishments, Coon remains humble and radiates the spirit of the dairy industry to those around him.

Keenan Thygesen of Tunbridge, Vermont, was named the 18^th Merle Howard Award winner at the 55^th World Dairy Expo on Friday, October 7. “Hard-working” and “a can-do attitude” are two descriptions for this year’s Merle Howard Award Winner. In 4-H, Thygesen served as secretary, vice president, and then president of his club. As his 4-H career came to a close, he joined his state’s quiz bowl team that competed at the highly competitive National 4-H Dairy Knowledge Bowl competition in Louisville, Kentucky. That same year, Thygesen was a delegate to the National 4-H Dairy Conference.

With a deep desire to expand his dairy knowledge, Thygesen also competed in both Jeopardy and Quiz Bowl as a member of the New England Junior Holstein Association. A person who steps up to lead, he also served as secretary for that group. As a high school student at the Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire, this year’s Merle Howard winner played baseball, basketball and was a member of the STEM Scholars group.

While these accolades are among the many reasons this young man won the Merle Howard award, it’s his work with the show string that ultimately led him to the winner circle. This Vermont dairy exhibitor has walked animals in four breeds across World Dairy Expo’s famed colored shavings: Ayrshire, Guernsey, Holstein, and Jersey. This includes homebred animals in all four breeds. In 2021, Thygesen showed the first-place spring calf that went on to become Reserve Junior Champion of the International Junior Guernsey Show. That same year, he was also responsible for the daily care of the Junior Champion of the International Guernsey Show. This year, Thygesen, along with his cousin, earned third place honors with their homebred Ayrshire summer junior two-year-old cow.  

A fitter who continues to hone his talents, Thygesen earned fourth and fifth place finishes at the two most recent youth fitting contests at World Dairy Expo. In addition, he has groomed cattle for many farms across the Northeast and Midwest. To further develop his skills, Thygesen interned at Luck-E Holsteins this past summer.

Thygesen is the son of Kyle and Jen Thygesen and is currently a freshman at the University of Minnesota majoring in animal science. A unique aspect about Thygesen is that he is an accomplished poultry breeder. He received the American Poultry Association scholarship in 2022, the highest award given to a youth of that national organization.

Merle Howard was a respected dairy industry pioneer. Winner of the 1954 Klussendorf Award, Howard was a herd manager, Holstein classifier, and later a sales and export businessman. Howard also served on the first National Dairy Shrine Board of Directors.

Oakfield Solom Footloose-ET stole the show at World Dairy Expo as she was named the 2022 Supreme Champion. Footloose is owned by Duckett Holsteins, Vierra Dairy and Tim & Sharyn Abbott of Rudolph, Wisconsin, and took home the Gregory Blaska Memorial Trophy. Her winning streak began with numerous wins in the International Holstein Show, topping the Five-Year-Old Cow Class and later named Senior Champion Female and Grand Champion Female. Taking the title of Reserve Supreme Champion of World Dairy Expo was the Grand Champion Female of the International Jersey Show, Rivendale VIP Eloise, owned by Vierra Dairy Farms of Hilmar, California.

Kingsway Alligator A Twix, owned by Velthuis Farms Ltd of Osgoode, Ontario, Canada, was named the Supreme Champion Heifer after claiming the Junior Champion title during the International Holstein Show the day before. A Twix took home the W. Terry Howard Memorial Trophy along with her honors. The Reserve Supreme Champion Heifer title went to the Junior Champion of the International Red & White Show, North Effect Wa Tatas-Red, owned by Chris & Jen Hill and Tim & Sharyn Abbott of Thurmont, Maryland.

Oakfield Solom Footloose-ET, owned by Duckett Holsteins, Vierra Dairy and Tim & Sharyn Abbott of Rudolph, Wisconsin, was named Grand Champion Female of the International Holstein Show at World Dairy Expo^®. With this title, Footloose received the Allen Hetts Grand Champion Trophy and the $1,000 Udder Comfort Grand Champion Cash Award. Footloose claimed titles as the first-place Five-Year-Old Cow and Senior Champion on her way to Grand Champion. The Intermediate Champion, Blondin Unstopabu Maple-Red, also received Reserve Grand Champion honors for owners R&F Livestock, K Doeberiener, L Bowen and W Schilling of West Salem, Ohio.

The winning Four-Year-Old Cow, Oak-Ridge K Gchip Turbo, received Reserve Senior Champion honors and was exhibited by Milk Source and Ransom-Rail, Kaukauna, Wisconsin. Reserve Intermediate Champion was Ms Crushabull Carolina-ET, exhibited by Jim Butler of Chebanse, Illinois

Junior Champion honors went to the winning Winter Yearling Heifer, Kingsway Alligator A Twix, exhibited by Velthuis Farms Ltd of Osgoode, Ontario, Canada. Ms Thunderstorm Eternity-ET, exhibited by La Femme Fatale Syndicate of Kaukauna, Wisconsin, was the second-place Winter Yearling Heifer and named Reserve Junior Champion.

Premier Breeder honors went to Oakfield Corners Dairy of Oakfield, New York, and Jim Butler of Chebanse, Illinois was named Premier Exhibitor. Croteau Lesperron Unix-ET was the Premier Sire of the International Holstein Show. In the heifer show, the Premier Exhibitor banner was awarded to Velthuis Farms Ltd., Osgoode, Ontario, Canada while Premier Breeder was presented to Ferme Petitclerc of St. Basile, Quebec, Canada. Premier Sire of the Heifer Show was Brenland Denver.

Placing a total of 508 animals in the International Holstein Show were official judge, Pierre Boulet of Montmagny, Quebec, Canada, and associate judge, Richard Landry of Ste-Brigitte-des-Saults, Quebec, Canada.

300 entries were evaluated in this year’s World Forage Analysis Superbowl. The Brevant seeds Forage Superbowl Luncheon presented awards to the top five finishers during World Dairy Expo. Rodney Archer of Alamosa, Colorado was named the Grand Champion Forage Producer with his Grass Hay entry and was presented $2,500 from Kemin Animal Nutrition & Health for that honor. The Grand Champion First-Time Entrant award of $2,000, sponsored by New Holland, went to Strassburg Creek Farm of Wittenberg, Wisconsin for their BMR corn silage.

Quality Counts Awards were also presented to competitors during the luncheon. In the area of Quality Counts Corn Silage, Four Hands Holsteins of Amery, Wisconsin captured top honors with their BMR corn silage, sponsored by Silostop. For Quality Counts Hay/Haylage, Rodney Archer of Alamosa, Colorado earned first place. Their award was sponsored by CROPLAN.

Palmyra Predator B Ruthless-ET was the last cow standing as she was crowned Grand Champion Female and Senior Champion Female of the International Ayrshire Show at World Dairy Expo^®. Ruthless received the $1,000 Udder Comfort Grand Champion Award and the Allen Hetts Grand Champion Trophy. Owned by Kurt Wolf and John Cannon of Epworth, Iowa. Ruthless also won the Four-Year-Old Cow Class. Alongside Ruthless was the Reserve Grand Champion, Heineman Reagan Roz, owned by Angela Fuller of Attica, New York. Roz stood at the top of the Junior Three-Year-Old Cow Class on her way to the Intermediate Champion Female title.

The Reserve Senior Champion was awarded to Old-Bankston JC Banner, shown by Glamourview-Iager & Walton of Walkersville, Maryland. Banner topped the Five-Year-Old Cow Class. Receiving Reserve Intermediate Champion Female honors is Margot Precious. The first-place Junior Three-Year-Old is exhibited by Kurt Wolf and Mike Maier of Epworth, Iowa.

Closing out the champions of the International Ayrshire Show, Junior Champion Female honors went to the winning Fall Heifer Calf, Lazy M Kingsire Xyllvi, exhibited by Glamourview-Iager & Walton of Walkersville, Maryland. Stylin R Morticia, shown by Leslie & Linda Bruchey of Westminster, Maryland, was named Reserve Junior Champion Female after topping the Summer Yearling Heifer Class.

This year’s Premier Breeder of the International Ayrshire Show went to Palmyra Farm of Hagerstown, Maryland, which also bred the Premier Sire, Palmyra Berkely Reagan-ET. Peter Vail of Englewood, Florida secured Premier Exhibitor and Premier Exhibitor of the Heifer Show. Fennimore, Wisconsin residents, Mark and Becky Brown, achieved Premier Breeder of the Heifer Show. The Junior Champion’s sire, Bear-Ayr Distinct Kingsire, was named Premier Sire of the Heifer Show.

Official judge Chad Ryan of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin and associate Mandi Bue of Kaukauna, Wisconsin, placed a total of 289 animals in the International Ayrshire Show.

The first and second place Lifetime Component Merit Cows stood triumphant on the colored shaving in the International Junior Ayrshire Show at World Dairy Expo. Bricker Farms Gibbs Carvella stood at the top, receiving the titles of Grand Champion Female and Senior Champion Female. She is owned by T, L, A, K & L Bricker and C Binckley of Salem, Ohio, and took home the $500 Udder Comfort Grand Champion Award and the Lillian & Keith King and Jim King Grand Champion of the Junior Show Award. The second-place Lifetime Component Merit Cow, Toppglen Wishful Thinking-ET, followed as the Reserve Grand Champion Female and Reserve Senior Champion Female. Wishful Thinking was shown by Tanner, Brennan, Marissa and Logan Topp of West Salem, Ohio and received the Lillian & Keith King and Jim King Reserve Grand Champion of the Junior Show Award.

Old-Bankston JC Baymont was named the Intermediate Champion Female and placed first in the Summer Junior Two-Year-Old Cow Class for the International Junior Ayrshire Show. Baymont is leased by Tyler Arnold and owned by C Wolf and C, C, & C Cannon of Guttenberg, Iowa. Reserve Intermediate Champion honors went to the Junior Three-Year-Old, Arthuracres Handsome Annalise, exhibited by Matthew Thompson & Cooper Wolf of Gutenberg, Iowa.

Grand-View Tuxedo Devyn-ET was the winning junior in the Fall Heifer Calf Class before taking home the honor of Junior Champion Female of the Junior Show. Devyn is exhibited by J, L & M Harbaugh and Tim Busch of Marion, Wisconsin. Reserve Junior Champion Female was the winning Winter Yearling Heifer, On Topp Willy Nilly, exhibited by Keaton & Kinley Topp, Botkins, Ohio.

Official judge Chad Ryan of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin and associate Mandi Bue of Kaukauna, Wisconsin, placed a total of 113 animals in the International Junior Ayrshire Show.

Ms Ransom-Rail Beth-Red was named Grand Champion Female and Senior Champion Female of the International Red & White Show, Thursday, October 6, and took home the Allen Hetts Grand Champion Trophy and the $1,000 Udder Comfort Grand Champion Award. Beth, the winner of the Four-Year-Old Cow Class, was exhibited by Milk Source, Ransom-Rail and Fischer of Kaukauna, Wisconsin. The Reserve Grand Champion Female and Reserve Senior Champion Female, Anita Absolute Joline-Red, was first place in the 125,000 Lb. Production Cow Class and was exhibited by Milk Source and L. Fischer of Kaukauna, Wisconsin.

Intermediate Champion Female was awarded to the winning Senior Two-Year-Old Cow, Lookout Burning It Up-Red, exhibited by Lookout, Elitehaven of Canton De Hatley, Québec, Canada. Milksource Tantrum-Red-ET topped the Senior Three-Year-Old Cow Class and was crowned the Reserve Intermediate Champion Female for exhibitor Milk Source of Kaukauna, Wisconsin.

North Effect Wa Tatas-Red topped the Summer Yearling Heifer Class and was named Junior Champion Female. Tatas is owned by Chris & Jen Hill and Tim & Sharyn Abbott of Thurmont, Maryland. They were awarded the $500 Junior Champion Cash Award presented by Cargill Animal Nutrition. Holzer Warrior Princess, Reserve Junior Champion Female and the winning Spring Yearling Heifer was exhibited by Westcoast Holsteins of Chilliwack, British Colombia, Canada.

Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor of the Heifer Show were awarded to Owen & Kendyll Kress, Kress-Hill Dairy of Newton, Wisconsin. Premier Breeder was awarded to Milk Source of Kaukauna, Wisconsin. Oakfield Corners Dairy of Oakfield, New York was awarded Premier Exhibitor. Premier Sire of the Heifer Show and Premier Sire was Mr Blondin Warrior-Red.

Placing a total of 372 animals in the International Red & White Show were official judge Pat Lundy of Granville, New York, and associate judge Gary Jones of Gorey, County Wexford, Ireland.

Garay-Red Diamond-Red-ET caught the judges’ eye at the International Junior Red & White Show. She was named Senior Champion after topping the Four-Year-Old Cow Class and took home the $500 Udder Comfort Grand Champion Award and the Lillian & Keith King and Jim King Grand Champion of the Junior Show Award. She is exhibited by Landree and Dakota Fraley of Millmont, Pennsylvania. Reserve Grand Champion, Arb-Flo-Spr Honeybun-Red-ET, exhibited by Jacey and Hadley Ross of Delavan, Wisconsin, received the Lillian & Keith King and Jim King Reserve Grand Champion of the Junior Show Award.

Rounding out the cow champion lineup were Intermediate Champion Female Milksource Awesome Time-Red and Reserve Intermediate Champion Female of the Junior Show Schluter Atlanta-Red-ET. Time was the winning Junior Two-Year-Old Cow exhibited by Tristen Hans Ostrom of Kaukauna, Wisconsin. Atlanta, the Senior Two-Year-Old Cow, was exhibited by Matthew & Elizabeth Gunst and Evan J Hathaway of Hartford, Wisconsin.

Junior Champion honors went to W-Brook Hottest-Red, who was shown by K Hawvermale, N & C Spreng and H & T Hinz of Wooster, Ohio. Hottest was the first place Fall Heifer Calf. Kress-Hill Spicy-Red-ET, the winning junior in the Winter Yearling Heifer Class, was Reserve Junior Champion and exhibited by Jacey and Hadley Ross of Delavan, Wisconsin.

Joel Phoenix of Cannington, Ontario, Canada, was presented the 31^st Klussendorf-MacKenzie Award during World Dairy Expo^® 2022, in memory of Duncan MacKenzie, the 1961 Klussendorf winner. While this year’s Klussendorf-MacKenzie award winner has an impressive dairy resumé, it is most important to note that Phoenix exemplifies the standards that made Duncan MacKenzie the forbearer of this award.

This year’s MacKenzie winner was a very active 4-H member and developed his skills to a level that enabled him to become a world-renowned cattle fitter. Spending more than 15 years as a professional dairy cattle fitter, this Canadian has traveled the world to work with many great people and animals. In 2013, Phoenix was honored with the inaugural Andrea Crowe Achievement Award at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, Canada, for exhibiting “everyday love of the industry” that inspires others, fosters knowledge, and encourages good sportsmanship.

At the shows, this Ontario dairyman is known for his sportsmanship, never having a negative word for a judge after a difficult defeat and is extremely humble when he has showring success. He is a knowledgeable source of advice for anyone who asks, and his honesty makes him a valuable partner to those who purchase animals with him. As a result of his efforts, the family dairy has owned and merchandized many All-Canadian and All-American nominations over the past ten years.

One of the most admirable things about the 2022 Duncan MacKenzie winner is that even when he is working with some of the biggest, most prominent names in the industry, he is still himself. He never hesitates to use his skills and strengths to help people when they need it. Phoenix never forgets where he came from nor who his family and friends are.

Phoenix would be the first to acknowledge that it takes a team to run a dairy and quick to thank his wife, Jessica, and their children, Jacob and Jordan, and his father, Jim, for their work on the farm. A successful Holstein judge, this Ontario Holstein breeder has placed cattle across Canada and around the world. This includes being the associate Holstein judge at both the Royal Winter Fair and World Dairy Expo. In addition, Joel has judged cattle at the Mexican National Holstein and Jersey Show, the New South Wales Australian Show, the Atlantic Fall Championship Show, and the Manitoba Spring Show.

John Erbsen of Lanark, Illinois, was presented the 80th Klussendorf Award, the highest recognition given to a dairy cattle showman in the United States, during the 55th World Dairy Expo. Erbsen embodies every great quality of a great dairyman.

The award is given in memory of Arthur B. Klussendorf, considered an outstanding showman of his time and a model for all who have followed him. This year’s selection was made by members of the Klussendorf Memorial Association, formed in 1937, at its annual meeting held earlier this week in Madison, Wis. Erbsen received the silver trophy designed by Tiffany Jewelers of New York City.

Erbsen is among the most unique individuals to ever win the award. He continues to have a highly successful career in the A.I. industry as a dairy programs specialist and has captured outstanding cattle images as a professional photographer. Both vocations span over three decades.

As good as this Illinois native is in those spaces, it’s his cow sense that ultimately led fellow Klussendorf Association members to select this individual as the 80^th winner of North America’s most coveted show award. Having developed a friendship with the Kamps Family of Kamps-Hollow, he also became a big fan of Kamps-Hollow Altitude. Because of his suggestion to Select Sires, KHW Kite Advent-Red entered A.I. service and made a tremendous impact for the Red & White Holstein breed. It’s at this time that Erbsen also negotiated a purchase of Advent’s sister KHW Regiment Apple-Red and owned her with several partners throughout the years. Today, we simply know this cow as “Apple” as she has transformed the Red & White breed.

The Apple legacy unfolded when she won the Junior Two-Year-Old Cow Class at the International Holstein Show. Five years later, Apple ascended to become the Grand Champion at the International Red & White Show. Then, in 2013, one of the unique moments in World Dairy Expo annals took place — Apple’s clone, Apple 3, was named Grand Champion. Apple, herself, was named Reserve Grand Champion, and Apple’s daughter earned honorable mention honors that year. Fast forward to this year, Apple was named the All-Time Red & White World Champion by the Holstein International magazine.

The next chapter of Erbsen’s incredible story began to unfold in 2013 when he invested in Apple’s six-month-old daughter, Miss Apple Snapple. Two years later, Snapple also won the Junior Two-Year-Old Cow Class at World Dairy Expo. Prior to that moment in time, Snapple was flushed and one of her calves was Erbacres Snapple Shakira-ET. Shakira eventually ascended to the pinnacle of World Dairy Expo stardom when she was named Supreme Champion for her new owners in 2021. While many great people contributed to the success of these great cows, John Erbsen was in the middle of it all.
