Judge Adam Hodgins
The heifers came out swinging in the ring today, and judge Adam Hodgins had his work cut out for him. From spring calves right up through the winter yearlings, this was a deep, deep show — the kind where second and third could’ve traded places on a different day. Hodgins (Hodglynn Holsteins, a 65-cow type-and-marketing herd with a stack of All-Canadian and All-American nominees behind him) kept his lineups clean and rarely second-guessed himself, working smoothly alongside UK associate Graham Kirby of Preston, Lancashire — a Semex UK man who runs the Absolute Genetics prefix and, fittingly, co-owns Hodgland Altitude Madison right back in the judge’s own barn. A note on the calendar, too: the EastGen Challenge portion had been bumped from the week prior after smoke and poor air quality from Northern Ontario’s forest fires forced a postponement, so it ran folded into the open show.
If you want the shorthand on how Hodgins sorted them, it came down to a clear standard he stuck to all afternoon: length, openness through the rib, dairy strength, and — again and again — how a heifer handled those hind legs and foot on the move. Mid-show he unpacked the why behind it in what one commentator called “a dissertation” — building feet, legs and front-end strength for longevity in loose-housing and robot barns, and chasing chest width and barrel for the feed intake it takes to hold 40–50 litres a day (up from 23–28 back in the ’70s). It was a genuine state-of-the-breed moment, robots and sexed-and-beef semen and all.
That recipe rewarded a handful of programs in a big way. Butlerview/Clarkvalley ran the table late, grabbing the Winter Yearling win and going all the way to Junior Champion (and Junior Champion Best Bred & Owned). Beckridge Holsteins was everywhere in the yearlings, capped by Lily Beckett steering Echo Glen Master Irina to Champion 4-H Calf. And Brian Enright’s Winright prefix stayed hot — a bred-and-owned Spring Heifer winner, placings up and down the line, and the Fall Heifer champion, Winright Alpha Tahiti, who’d just sold outright to KSF Holsteins of Eastern Ontario. Enright’s crew bred and exhibited her; the banner just came with new ownership on the halter card.
This was also a genuinely international field. The winning animals traced to Nova Scotia, Quebec, Illinois, New York, Wisconsin — even Utah — and the ringside crew flagged plenty of these heifers as ones you’ll see later in the show campaign on both sides of the border. There was a nice historical thread on the reds, too: 20 years ago the winners were all white, then Goldwyn made black the “dairy” look, and now — with bloodlines like Apple driving it — the reds can walk into any black-and-white lineup and compete, exactly what Butlerview Alpha Luv-Red did in taking the R&W Junior Champion. Off the halter, the youth story was strong: the Ontario Dairy Youth Trust Fund backed the participants, and the 2026 Brian Brad Scholarship went to Kyle Meek and Charlotte House (with Charlotte picking up a second Trust Fund award).
Honestly, though, depth was the story of the day. Hodgins kept calling classes “tremendously deep” and openly admitted several third- and fourth-place heifers were “awfully close” to moving up — the sort of show where a little more polish on the halter could’ve swung a placing.
If the heifers set the table, the cows served the feast. Judge Adam Hodgins (Hodglynn Holsteins), back on the mic with UK associate Graham Kirby, worked through a milking string that had the barn standing up to applaud more than once — he literally asked the crowd to give the four-year-old class a hand just to take in the udders. His theme carried straight over from the heifers but sharpened for cows in milk: dairy strength, an open frame with depth of rib, and above all the quality, height and width of a mammary system — plus how comfortably a cow travels on her hind legs and pasterns when she’s carrying a real udder.
A few big stories ran through the day. The Fraeland/Beckridge camp out of Keswick and Fergus was everywhere — a bred-and-owned Fall Yearling in Milk champion (Fraeland Alpha Precious, now under Parallel Genetics), the Intermediate Champion (Fraeland Beckridge Energy Brie), and a stack of placings. Mt. Elgin Dairy Farms banked Premier Exhibitor honours on sheer depth of string, and Fraeland Farms took Premier Breeder. And at the very top, Ron Grandy’s Famipage Legend Barabas did it again — Grand Champion for the second year running, then Supreme Champion of the whole show over a beautiful Jersey. Hodgins summed her up simply: a cow that excels in frame, capacity and a tremendous mammary system.

Hodgins didn’t hide it — the moment the four-year-old class walked in, he figured these two would “stay together the rest of the day.” An exceptional pair for Grand and Reserve: Barabas, back-to-back Grand Champion in as many years, on frame, capacity and a tremendous mammary system, with Doc Hot Shot right behind her. For honourable mention he pulled his Intermediate Champion, Brie — “a cow with a lot of future ahead of her” that matched the top pair beautifully.

The reds crowned a youthful queen: Mustang, the first-place red-and-white senior two-year-old out of the powerful Mt. Elgin string, took the coloured banner, with the veteran Lyn-Vale Julieann-Red standing reserve out of the mature class. A nice spread of ages at the top of the R&W show, and a reminder of how much depth Mt. Elgin brought across every class today.

A tremendous young-cow show came down to two class winners, and the summer two-year-old, Brie, took the banner on the strength of that wide-open frame and standout mammary — the same udder-and-frame combination that carried her class. Dorthe, the long, angular, high-moving spring two-year-old, backed her up in reserve, with Pamela rounding out the honours. Fittingly, Brie traces right back to Fergus — a genuinely home-grown Ontario winner.

Hodgins pulled five heifers that “really fit the mold” — balance, open frames, free movement, femininity, hard tops — and said the top three looked very, very similar. In the end Glitter Girl was the one anybody in the barn could find: an effort that moves so precisely, with tremendous width, depth, balance and breed character to earn the banner. Tallahassee chased her hard in reserve, following so nicely with a fuller, springier midsection and moving that touch more comfortably — but Glitter Girl simply tucked her tail head down a little neater today to hold the top. A genuinely deep drive that Hodgins called himself “extremely happy” with.

A tremendous group of reds, and Hodgins went with the spring yearling for the top spot. He loved Luv-Red’s femininity, her straight lines, and just how mobile and balanced she is — calling her a beautiful heifer that edged the intermediate (winter) calf on being a shade more balanced and more proportionate today. Damina, the powerful, open, hard-topped winter heifer, took reserve on her width and openness through the chest, with Stars Live rounding out the honours. As the crew noted ringside, the reds keep closing the gap — these are heifers that can walk into any black-and-white lineup and compete.

Five 4-H calves that all did well in their classes lined up as tremendous hard tops with great legs and open frames — exactly Hodgins’ recipe for the day. He tapped the winning summer yearling, Irina, for showing a little more openness and a cleaner frame today. He took nothing away from the extremely long-framed senior calf Alaska in reserve — she moves beautifully and simply needed her tail head set a touch nicer — nor from the extremely feminine, open-framed spring yearling Aba in honourable mention. A great result for a young exhibitor doing the work on the halter.
Spring Heifer
Born March 1st, 2026 – May 31st, 2026
Erica took the top spot the way a class winner should — calm and balanced from front to back, moving out beautifully and using her width and depth of fore rib as she went. Hodgins liked how she carried her tail head just that touch nicer than the longer-framed Bronx in second, a gorgeous heifer in her own right who simply gave a hair on cleanliness up top. Stars Live in third was a shade longer-framed and a touch cleaner all the way through to earn her the red-and-white nod, while the bottom pair separated on comfort through the topline — the higher-placed heifer just carried herself a little more correctly today.

Winter Heifer

Another huge class, and Master Mae was pretty from nose to tail. Hodgins loved the way her neck came out of the shoulder, the breed character through her head, and that natural openness and silkiness — enough to edge the long, open-framed, hard-topped Damina, who ceded just a touch on foot angle today. Sage in third was another really open, free-moving heifer that Hodgins admitted was “awfully close” to moving up, held only by how the top two carried their rumps. Down the line it stayed tight: British Josie moved a little more freely, and the higher pair simply stayed cleaner down through the bone in the hock.

Fall Heifer
Born September 1st, 2025 – November 30th, 2025
A beautiful pair headed an extremely competitive class. Tahiti won it on cleanliness — more breed character through the head and neck, a more natural spring to her rib, a fuller midsection, and cleaner bone in the hock — over a stunning Alaska in second that was flat hard to take your eyes off, a long-framed heifer with tremendous loin strength who carried her top and moved beautifully. Marielle in third earned it on width, strength, and angularity, using her loin and clean bone to slide past a pretty, open-framed heifer in fourth. The bottom split on effort: the fourth-place heifer simply carried her top a shade nicer and wanted it a little more on the walk.

Summer Yearling

A tremendously deep class, and tight at the top. Irina took it on an extremely long, pretty frame with tremendous openness and cleanliness — a touch cleaner through the head, neck and point of shoulder, and just moving that bit nicer on her high legs and clean hock. Marissa in second matched her for a wide-open, deep chest and carried her top beautifully, giving only a hair from hooks to pins. Boston in third had tremendous sweep and needed only a small set-up to hold her spot, while Boom Boom Pow moved up on extra mass through the midsection. Ellie in fifth is one Hodgins flagged as ready to climb once she settles for a young leadsman.

An outstanding class you could’ve sorted a few different ways — but the top pair separated cleanly. Marino won on a long, open-ribbed frame with real depth and a tremendous angle to her rib, plus a touch more breed character and silkiness through the head, neck and point of shoulder. Chrissy in second was all about mobility — she moves so well — and simply carried her top and tucked that tail head a shade nicer today. Aba in third grabbed the eye from the ring and used her dairyness and femininity to go over the bigger-framed Lulu in fourth, who countered with more overall mass and width of chest. Luv-Red capped the top five as a clean, open, angular effort on a beautiful set of legs.

Another tremendous class that sorted to two at the top — and Glitter Girl excelled, with so much length, width and body strength that she moved free and comfortable while using that width all the way through, handling her hind legs a touch nicer down in the foot. She’d go on to take Junior Champion (and Best Bred & Owned). Tallahassee in second was a tremendously refined heifer — cleaner and more feminine up through the neck, cleaner down the bone — over a powerful third. Down the line it was balance and depth: Adine took third on more mass and lower-rib depth, and the fourth-place heifer carried her top and handled those high legs better than a nice square opener in fifth.

A “last-minute switch” that paid off, Hodgins said — Precious won it on her mammary system, a udder that’s high and wide with a long fore attachment and loads of quality. She was a touch coarser up front than the striking dairy heifer in second, but that rear udder carried the day; second edged third on more depth of fore udder and a cleaner head and neck. Third took fourth on overall udder quality and definition of the median suspensory, staying that bit cleaner through the hock. The fourth-to-fifth call was tight — both good-uddered — with the fourth-place cow simply longer through the fore udder over a really nice red in fifth.

Hodgins went with “the heifer that’s the most trending today” — Dorthe is long, angular, a dairy machine that walks the ring beautifully (a blemish on the hock from an old injury didn’t bother her a bit), and she carried more height, width and volume to her rear than a gorgeous young cow in second. He loved the second-place cow but wanted her cleaner through the head and neck with more capacity up top. Second beat third on quartering and teat placement and a squarer front leg; third took fourth on the top of the rear udder and teat set; and fourth edged fifth purely on mobility and cleanliness through the head and neck.

Hodgins admitted he was “close to a switch” at the top, but Scoobie won on dairy strength — a cow that just looks like she naturally milks, with more width and a nicer drape to the rib, a longer and more level-floored udder. She gave a little at the bottom of the udder today, but stood higher and wider in the rear. He loved the eye-catching second-place cow and her udder quality, telling her she just needed to “work a little harder” to move up; she used her femininity and rear-leg mobility to hold second over a strong-uddered third. Fourth and fifth split on rear-udder definition and dairy quality.

“Wow — and they’re all a little different.” Catch Me edged a beautiful, big-uddered second (Lilah, the class Best Udder) on mobility and comfort — she’s more fluid through the middle of her spine and simply walks more comfortably, even as Hodgins conceded the second-place cow had more volume and height to that udder. Second took third mainly on rump structure, being more level over the hooks. Third-to-fourth was close between two very similar mature-patterned cows, decided on the fourth-place cow’s rear-udder volume and pop; fourth over fifth on front-end strength, heart depth and width.

Second held over a pretty third on more bloom and udder volume; third took fourth on cleanliness through the head and neck and end-to-end balance. The freshly-calved red cow in fourth is one he flagged to watch — “going to look a lot better in a month or two.”

Second used balance and cleanliness through the front end over a stylish black cow in third; third-to-fourth split on teat size and shape; fourth over fifth on tighter joints and a nicer set to the thurls and pins.

Just two entries in this age class, but two really nice cows. Kahlula fit the pattern Hodgins had rewarded all day — balanced, deep through the chest, open-framed and easy on the move, with a quality mammary system showing plenty of definition of the median suspensory, more rear-udder quality, and more depth of heart and rib. He took nothing away from the nice red cow in second, who’s simply carried a lot of lactations. Small class, but a clean call.
