Dairy-Tech 2023: Milk yield, fat and protein production awards

The Gold Cup is the UK’s top dairy award. It went to the Logan family, a fifth-generation partnership that runs the 280-head Holehouse herd in Ayrshire, Scotland.

The mostly red and white cows gave an average of 10,500 kg of milk with 4.10 percent butterfat and 3.40 percent protein when they were milked twice a day from September 20,2021 to September 20,2022. Muller buys milk from the herd that has calves all year.

Di Wastenage, chair of the Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers (RABDF) and one of the judges, said that Logan’s farming system “had it all”: “They tick all the boxes for sustainability, the environment, getting the most out of the land, and making sure the cows are healthy and happy. They are on the cutting edge of many new technologies that help them move their 280 pedigree Holstein cow herd forward.
Dairy-Tech 2023 awards

At Dairy-Tech 2023, 4 awards were given out in addition to the National Milk Records RABDF Gold Cup: The Torrance family from Stapleford Abbotts, near Romford, Essex, won the Chris May Memorial Cup for having the Gold Cup-qualifying herd with the highest lifetime daily yield. Their Curtismill pedigree Holstein herd, which was made up of 670 cows and 430 followers, gave an average of 22.30 kg of milk per cow per day over the course of its lifetime. In 2020, the Gold Cup went to John Torrance’s dairy business, which he ran with his father Robert, mother Janet, and wife Lucy.

The NMR Silver Salver was given to Messrs Harvey, Drum Farm, Beeswing, Dumfries, for having the Holstein herd that produced the most fat and protein overall. The farm family takes care of 300 Holstein cows that have been raised from birth. Their Killywhan herd gave them 1.017 kg of fat and protein per cow and 14,267 kg of milk when they milked them three times a day.

The Lillyhill Cup was won by Robert, Lorraine, and Mark Hunterm from West Tarbrax Farm in Lanarkshire in 2022. It is given to the Gold Cup-qualifying Jersey herd with the most fat and protein overall. The 160 milking cows from Hunter’s Clydevalley Jerseys weighed a total of 878.42 kg/cow. Cows give milk that is 6.97% fat and 3.93% protein and weighs 8,063 kg.

And Richard Bell from Wigton, Cumbria, won the Chairman’s Cup for the herd that had the most fat and protein. This was for breeds other than Holstein and Jersey. His Nerewater pedigree Friesian herd of 70 milking cows had a fat and protein total of 738 kg, which was a winning number. The herd of cows that have calves all year long and are fed grass makes an average of 8,800 kg of milk with 4.4% butterfat and 3.52% protein.
Milk guarantee programme

At the event, which was held at Stoneleigh Park, a new milk assurance scheme was introduced. The Assured Integrated Milk Supplier (AIMS) scheme will make sure that people who buy milk from sources other than farms can find out where it came from.

The AIMS Assured Standards fill a gap in current assurance and industry schemes by covering milk that is sold between dairy companies as part of business deals. The scheme was made by the industry and is supported by Dairy UK. It has a Code of Practice that businesses must follow and are audited on. This makes sure that members can find out where their milk came from and makes sure that suppliers have done their jobs.

Tim Hampton, who is the chair of AIMS, said, “Trading milk between dairies has many benefits, both financially and in terms of operations and the environment. This is important for a modern, efficient dairy industry.” But it has been known for a long time that it does leave a hole in supply chain assurance. This programme is meant to fill that gap by creating a network of trusted suppliers who can grade with confidence and help us meet the needs of our customers and, in the end, consumers.

It will be like the Red Tractor and the Dairy Transport Assurance Scheme, which are already in place. It lets any dairy business in Great Britain buy and sell milk with other businesses.

Matthew Knight, who is in charge of running the RABDF, said that business was good at the show. But producers were aware of milk price cuts, even though input costs were still high, there were still problems with labour, and there was more pressure to cut emissions.

“The new lameness village had a lot of visitors because there were demonstrations of foot trimming going on all day. We’ll definitely try to build on it next year, when this important issue gets more attention.”

Lucas and Alise Sjostrom Recognized with 2023 Young Dairy Leaders Institute Distinguished Alumni Leader Award

Lucas and Alise Sjostrom of Brooten, Minn. have been selected as the Holstein Foundation’s 2023 Young Dairy Leaders Institute Distinguished Alumni Leader award recipients. The Holstein Foundation annually recognizes a Young Dairy Leaders Institute (YDLI) graduate or couple who have made noteworthy contributions to the dairy industry, applying skills gained during their YDLI experience.

Lucas and Alise are Class 7 YDLI graduates who voice that “When thinking about transforming ourselves as people, YDLI stands out as a very life-changing event.”

Both Lucas and Alise agree YDLI gave them a different perspective of the dairy industry and taught them how to be effective advocates. Aside from the wealth of knowledge the couple took away from YDLI, they formed a multitude of lasting friendships and invaluable network connections.

“As we continued our careers, we realized taste and fun could be mixed in with sustainability,” they shared. Lucas and Alise strive to uphold this mission at their family’s artisan cheese and whey spirits business, Redhead Creamery. They source the milk for their farmstead creamery from Jer-Lindy Farms, both owned in partnership with Alise’s parents, Jerry and Linda Jennissen.

Currently, Alise is the Owner and Head Cheesemaker at Redhead Creamery LLC, where she has produced over 50,000 pounds of artisan cheese per year using milk from Jer-Lindy Farms. At Redhead Creamery, she has a hand in everything from customer service to product development and marketing.

Lucas serves as Executive Director of the Minnesota Milk Producers Association at Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative. There he develops relationships with legislators, farmers, media, academia, and industry to simultaneously achieve the needs of two farmer-led organizations. He also heads Redhead Creamery’s new whey distillery project.

Lucas and Alise have three children, Lucy, Henry, and Conan. Aside from their careers in the dairy industry they are active in many committees and foundations such as The League of Minnesota Cheesemakers, The U.S. Dairy Sustainability committee, The Upper Midwest Dairy Industry Association, and The Minnesota Ag Water Quality Certification Program.

Lucas and Alise will be honored during the upcoming YDLI Class 12 Phase III program being held February 14 – 17 in Fort Worth, Texas.

The Young Dairy Leaders Institute, a program of the Holstein Foundation, is a nationally recognized three-phase leadership and communication skills development program for young adults (ages 22-45) working in the dairy industry. Throughout her time in Holstein Young Breeders, Natasha has been dedicated to taking part in a multitude of club activities and also encouraging younger members to develop their skills across all aspects of HYB. Holstein Association USA Announces 2022 Top BAA Herds

Holstein Association USA recently released the lists of top Holstein Breed Age Average (BAA%) herds for 2022 classifications. Members utilizing the Classic or Standard options of the Holstein classification program receive an overall BAA for their herd. The BAA value provides a way to compare an animal’s score to breed average, taking into account the age of the animal and their stage of lactation. The calculation puts cows of all ages on the same playing field.

”Providing recognition to breeders of outstanding Registered Holstein cattle across the country is one of the more enjoyable activities we perform at Holstein Association,” said Lindsey Worden, Executive Director, Holstein Genetic Services. “Earning recognition as a high BAA herd on any of the various lists is a notable achievement. It shows a commitment to breeding quality Holstein cattle, paired with outstanding animal husbandry and management that allows those cattle to express their genetic potential.”

In 2022, 970 herds had a BAA value eligible for inclusion in these lists. The average number of cows included in the BAA calculation for the entire group was 68, and the average BAA% was 107.7. Herds must have a minimum of 10 cows to be included for calculation on the list.

Topping the 2022 highest overall BAA list are Delbert W. and Heather D. Yoder from West Salem, Ohio, with a BAA of 116.3. Also earning honors in the top five spots on the list are Matthew T. Mitchell, Tennessee; Juniper Farm, Inc., Maine; Conant Acres, Maine; and G. Alpheaus Stoltzfus, Pennsylvania.

Lists are broken down in several different ways to recognize members across the country with herds of all sizes. Lists of the Overall Top 200 BAA Herds, Top 25 BAA Herds by Region, Top 25 BAA Herds by Herd Size, and Top 15 BAA Herds for Colleges & Universities can be viewed at www.holsteinusa.com. Find the page under the Popular List section on the homepage or directly at www.holsteinusa.com/programs_services/baa_lists_2022.html. Congratulations to all herds on these lists!

The American Milking Shorthorn Society and the Holstein Association USA are working together on a programme to classify multiple breeds.

The American Milking Shorthorn Society (AMSS) is happy to announce that it will work with the Holstein Association USA (HAUSA) to evaluate Milking Shorthorn cattle all over the United States. The new Multi-Breed Classification (Holstein, Guernsey, and Milking Shorthorn) programme will be run by appraisers who have been trained by HAUSA. They will work with HAUSA staff and AMSS staff to make sure that as many Milking Shorthorn breeders as possible can classify cows on a regular basis.

Under the direction of the AMSS type and classification committee, training sessions for HAUSA classifiers will be set up this spring. In May of 2023, HAUSA classifiers will start giving scores to Milking Shorthorn herds. On the AMSS website in January, there will be a full calendar with sign-up dates and tour dates.

“We’re glad to be able to help the American Milking Shorthorn Society classify Milking Shorthorn cows. “This joint effort will help members of both the American Milking Shorthorn Society and the Holstein Association USA,” said John M. Meyer, CEO of HAUSA. AMSS President Marcia Clark said, “The AMSS Board of Directors are looking forward to working with HAUSA on a classification programme that they think will make it easier to score more Milking Shorthorns consistently.”

In January, the milkingshorthorn.com website will have a full multi-breed classification schedule and a linear traits brochure. Contact the AMSS or HAUSA to find out more.

Vanvalley Epic Siiri Is 2022 BC Holstein Cow of the Year

The BC Holstein Association has just made the announcement that Vanvalley Epic Siiri EX-90-2E-CAN 5* has been selected as the winner of the 2022 British Columbia Cow of the Year award. Siiri was the pinnacle of utility, and it all started with her breeding in Duncan, British Columbia, with Ben Van Boven and his family. She had a lifetime production of 173,875 litres of milk (383,325 lbs), with a top record of 17,105 kg 616 kg 3.6% f 482 kg 2.9%p in 365d days at 13-01 (37,710 M 1358 F 1063 P) and a BCA of 316-309-277. In addition, she had a top record of 17,105 kg 616 kg 3.6% f 482 kg 2.9%p in 365d days at 13-01

Her first baby was a boy, but after that, she gave birth to a total of 12 healthy female calves. Her nine daughters have all been categorised as Good Plus or better, with three receiving a score of VG-88 and two more receiving a score of VG-85. She still has two more heifers that need to give birth, and as her offspring continue to add lactations and categories, she should be eligible for additional brood cow stars.
At the moment, one third of the VanValley herd is made up of Siiri’s offspring. Congratulations to Ben and Margie VanBoven, as well as Matt and Darbi VanBoven, on winning the BC Cow of the Year competition for 2022!

The following cows were all finalists for the 2022 BC Cow of the Year award:
Lavender Shottle Rosey EX-91-5E-CAN 7* – Lavender Farms Ltd.
Marilyn Sunnyhome Shottle is the EX-91-5E-CAN 12* representative of Sunnyhome Farms.
Vanvalley Epic Siiri EX-90-2E-CAN 5* – Vanvalley Farm Ltd.
Willwikk Baxter Dottie EX-91-6E-CAN 3* – J. William Wikkerind Farms Ltd.

Holstein Prefixes to be Released on December 31, 2022

It’s become an annual tradition for Holstein USA – the year-end release of prefixes that have been unused for over 20 years. Allowing the reuse of old, unused prefixes gives new members an opportunity to reserve a prefix that fits them and their farm.

The following are conditions regarding prefixes, as dictated by Board of Directors policy:
• After being reviewed by the board of directors, prefixes that have not been used to name a Registered Holstein in more than 20 years will be available for reuse.
• A prefix may be released for reuse after less than 20 years with the consent or request of the proprietor.
• The board of directors reserves the right to permanently retire a prefix.
• The proprietor may request permanent retirement of their prefix for a $100 fee.

This year, approximately 1,230 prefixes are scheduled to be released. If you’re looking for inspiration, see the entire list here!

How have calf registrations from the GB dairy herd changed over time?

The composition of calves being produced from the GB dairy herd has changed substantially over the years, according to registration data from the British Cattle Movement Service (BCMS). We explore these figures in more detail, for GB Calf Week.

In 2021, 1.44 million calves were registered to dairy dams, according to BCMS figures. Out of this, 36% were “dairy females”, 14% were “dairy males”, with the remainder (50%) being “non-dairy” males and females (beef X dairy calves).

This picture has changed over the last decade. Since 2011, the number of dairy males and “non-dairy” animals being registered from the dairy herd have diverged significantly. Dairy male registrations have fallen by 44%, while the number of non-dairy animal registrations have risen by 59%. There has also been a small rise in the number of dairy female registrations (+10%). In total, birth registrations to dairy dams in GB have risen by 12% (155,000 head) between 2011 and 2021.

Chart showing trends in birth registrations to GB dairy dams 2011-2021

Over the same period, the dairy herd has grown slightly. Defra data shows that the UK herd expanded by 4% (76,000 head) between December 2011 and 2021. The herd grew relatively rapidly from 2013, peaking at just over 1.9 million head in December 2015. However, since then, numbers have been on a slight decline. In December 2021, the herd stood at 1.86 million, 3% lower than six years previous.

Chart showing trends in UK cow numbers 2011-2021

The change in calf registrations over time is reflective of advancements in breeding strategies and technology within the industry. AHDB survey data shows that the use of sexed semen has increased significantly in the last decade, making up 70.5% of all dairy semen sales in the 12 months to March 2022. In 2012, this was just 12.3%. Beef semen use has also gained popularity among dairy producers, with sales to the dairy herd making up 48% of total beef semen sales over the same period.

Holstein Canada Renews Partnership with Dairy Farmers of Canada for Cattle Assessment Services

Holstein Canada (HC) is pleased to announce a renewed partnership with Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) for delivering cattle assessment services to farms across Canada under the Animal Care module of proAction®.

DFC first contracted Holstein Canada in October 2016, and since then, Holstein Canada has been providing excellent cattle assessment services via their professional team of Assessors and Classifiers.

Cattle assessments are an important proAction requirement, involving an evaluation of a sample of cattle on every farm for body condition, hock, knee, neck and mobility scores. The resulting reports indicate where a farm is scoring well and where a farm may have an opportunity for improvement. The reports enable farms to track their progress and strive for excellence over time.

Highlights:

  • Prices for standard cattle assessments will remain the same, at $125 herd visit fee and $7/animal assessed.
  • Other specialty services include service in 6-months, 4-months or 30-days (with an applicable service fee).

HC and DFC have made other improvements to the contract in areas such as assessor consistency and streamlining processes.

Oceanbrae Farms Named Master Breeder for Second Time

The Canadian Milking Shorthorn Society is pleased to announce that Oceanbrae Farms of Belmont, Prince Edward Island has qualified for a second Master Breeder Award in 2022, based on points accumulated by animals bred by the Barrett Family between 2007 and 2019.  Oceanbrae Farms attained their first Master Breeder Award in 2008.

Oceanbrae Farms is a multi-generational farm on the shores of Malpeque Bay in Prince County, Prince Edward Island.  The Barrett Family has been actively breeding Milking Shorthorns since 1950, and the farm will be celebrating its 100th anniversary next year.  Fred Barrett and his wife Margaret shared their first Master Breeder award with Fred’s parents Keith and Sylvia, the culmination of many years farming in partnership with his father.  This year, Fred and Margaret celebrate their second Master Breeder recognition with their son Matthew and daughter-in-law Chandler, the fourth generation of Oceanbrae Farms.  In addition, Fred and Margaret’s son Ryan is involved in the farm in a part-time capacity, assisting with field agronomy and marketing of genetics.

For many years, the Oceanbrae prefix has been well known across Canada and internationally for expertise in Milking Shorthorn breeding.  The Barrett’s have sold Milking Shorthorns to producers in every Canadian province as well as to several US states over the years.  In addition, Oceanbrae embryos have been exported to the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand, while five Oceanbrae-bred bulls have entered AI in the past fifteen years, including the current #3 LPI sire, Oceanbrae Royal Bentley.

“Our goal is to breed highly productive cows with well-attached udders and sound feet and legs that will breed back quickly and survive in the herd for more than five lactations,” says Fred.  “In the last ten years of so, we’ve put a lot of focus on improving fat and protein production in our herd.  In that time, the average fat percentage in our herd has risen by more than a full percent, which we feel has increased the profitability of our farm.”

Oceanbrae Farms has been ranked as the #1 Lifetime Profit Index (LPI) Milking Shorthorn herd in Canada for several years and has also been the top ranked Milking Shorthorn herd in Canada for average BCA for many years, receiving the Society’s Clydagh Trophy.  During the twelve-year window evaluated for this award, the Barretts bred 30 Excellent cows, 24 cows scored between Very Good 87 and 89, 96 Superior Production Awards, 32 Lifetime Production Awards, 20 BCA Class Leader Awards, and three proven sires in the current Top 20 LPI sire list.

The Barrett’s currently milk approximately 75 cows in a modern free-stall barn built in 2019, including sand bedding and computerized grain feeders.  Milk cows are rotationally grazed from late May to early October and supplemented with a partial mixed ration.  The rest of the year, cows are fed twice a day with a total mixed ration consisting of high-quality alfalfa silage and hay, corn silage, grain corn and/or barley, soybean meal, and a Belisle mineral supplement.  Bred heifers are also extensively pastured.  The farm also maintains a small cow-calf herd of purebred Simmental beef cattle and does a small amount of cash cropping of corn and barley.

The Barrett’s maintain a passion for the Milking Shorthorn breed and are continuing to plan for the future by building on the success of the past.  Congratulations to the Barrett family on their second Master Breeder award!

Australian dairy farmers better placed than the rest of the world to capitalise on potential opportunities

That’s according to leading Dairy Australian analyst John Droppert who says one of the key drivers is the way the La Nina is playing out in the northern and southern hemispheres.

DA’s September Situation and Outlook report shows milk production is likely to remain stable this season, with farmgate prices remaining high.

The report forecasts a smaller global milk pool due to droughts, high input costs and farm exits in the northern hemisphere, which may offer opportunities for Australian exporters.

“High farmgate prices mean most farmers are currently making good profits,” Mr Droppert said.

“In the coming season, farmers will need to manage these high prices against labour shortages and relatively high input costs.

“In addition, increased precautions and contingency planning are being implemented by many farmers to safeguard them against the elevated risk of Foot-and-Mouth disease and Lumpy Skin Disease.”

He said the likely emergence of a rare, third consecutive La Nina event, as forecast by the Bureau of Meteorology, added another “level of intrigue”.

While that might mean good rainfall for some, it also carried the threat of more flooding, Mr Droppert said.

But it could also mean an increase in homegrown feed production, reducing the need for high-priced inputs.

European drought

The report found large parts of the European Union remained in drought, with milk production tracking 0.5 per cent below last year.

The most recent European Commission forecast anticipated a 0.6pc drop in production for the full 2022 calendar year.

Milk prices in the EU were also at record levels, but dry conditions through the northern hemisphere spring and summer had reduced pasture quality and availability.

High prices for purchased feeds had discouraged their use.

The Commission expected cow numbers across the bloc would continue to fall – not least due to the emergence of greenhouse gas emissions policies in key milk producing member states, such as Ireland and the Netherlands.

Conditions were also dry in the western United States (US), with California in particular entering a new phase of ‘exceptional drought’ conditions.

Nonetheless, milk production across the US returned to growth in June, with an increase of 0.2pc compared to June 2021.

“Cow numbers were still down almost 1pc on the same time last year, but the herd was now expanding, giving the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) confidence to tweak the 2022 calendar year outlook upwards, anticipating growth of 0.2pc, relative to 2021,” the S&O report summary said.

New Zealand ‘complicated’

New Zealand was entering a new season with high farmgate prices but medium-term constraints were likely to discourage overall industry expansion.

Individual farms might see an increase in production this season, if pasture conditions allowed.

Local analysts describe New Zealand’s experience of La Nina to be in the form of a wet spring and drier than average summer, both of which complicated the pasture management task for farmers.

With early signs that pasture growth was sluggish, high fertiliser and supplementary feed prices, combined with the threat of a tightening regulatory environment, meant the 2022/23 New Zealand season looked ‘complicated’.

There was a forecast of a 1.9pc reduction in overall milk intakes, which would constitute a second season of contraction following the 4.2pc drop of 2021/22.

Australia’s milk production concluded the 2021/22 season down by a similar proportion, almost 4pc compared with the 2020/21 year.

The report found significant concern among Australian farmers around high input costs and crippling staffing challenges have carried through to the new season, as have unseasonably wet conditions across large areas of Queensland and New South Wales.

The report found the high likelihood of a third consecutive La Nina would be unwelcome news in these regions, and its eventuality would likely bring challenges for the upcoming harvest period across both northern and southeastern Australia.

On the flip side, the characteristic increased rainfall associated with La Nina also held potential for gains in pasture growth and homegrown feed production for many dairy regions.

This could reduce reliance on highly priced feed inputs, and cushion farmers against the unpredictability of grain and fertiliser markets, which were at the whim of global influences.

It would also contribute to a promising outlook for irrigation water availability.

The Australian domestic dairy market remains characteristically more stable than the international commodity scene.

“Nonetheless, amid the complexity lies significant opportunity,” the report said.

“With two seasons of positive margins behind them, Australia’s dairy farmers are as well placed as any to capitalise.”

Holstein Marketplace Sires Releases Trio of Exciting New Bulls

Three new bulls have recently been launched through the Holstein Marketplace Sires program, managed by Holstein Services, Inc.

“These bulls exemplify the ideals of our program, creating a breeder-to-breeder market for genetics,” says Timothy Ziemba, Holstein Marketplace Sires Manager. “The goal of our program is to help Registered Holstein breeders market their genetics to fellow breeders and create a group of deep pedigreed bulls that fill everyone’s needs. Our new bulls offer the highest levels of genetics from contract-free high GTPI and NM$ bulls to the highest available Red PTAT bull from a world-renowned family.”

Holstein Marketplace Sires provides a unique avenue for Holstein breeders to market their genetics. The bull owners retain ownership of the bulls, and the Holstein Marketplace Sires coordinates the marketing and sales. Launched in January of 2019, this program provides a new choice of bulls offered by breeders for breeders.

New Releases:

American Milking Shorthorn Society Provides Details on New Policy Changes

We would like to call your attention to a policy change that will take effect over the course of the next 2 years changing one piece of the Genetic Expansion program:

Calves born beginning June 1, 2024 with an EXP sire and an EXP dam will be assigned to the GE herdbook level. Embryos created after August 31, 2023, from an EXP sire and an EXP dam will be assigned to the GE level atbirth. The embryo date corresponds approximately to the date that breedings would occur to create June 1, 2024offspring. Embryos created prior to that date fall under the old policy and maintain the EXP status.

This change does not impact show or award eligibility. Cows holding EXP or higher herdbook status will remain eligible. Additionally, the change does not impact any other herdbook level crosses (GE x full = EXP, EXP x full = full, etc.).

CHANGE

At the 2022 AMSS National Convention held in Champaign, Illinois the AMSS Board of Directors continued over ten years of discussions around breed improvement versus breed identity. All agree the Genetic Expansion program

has allowed the breed to improve dramatically and to thrive in today’s world. The program is vital to continuedimprovements and no discussion of closing the AMSS herdbook has been entertained. However, the drastic herdbookchanges that have taken place within our sister breeds (Dairy Shorthorns in UK and Illawarras in Australia) due to lowbreed percentages, led to deeper discussions regarding our status. The AMSS Board of Directors unanimously decided to reintroduce one of the original rules as a small step in maintaining the Milking Shorthorn breed identity. This step willhopefully prevent the need to take more drastic steps as our sister societies have had to do. We hope to not only maintainthe improvements made so far, but also protect the important Milking Shorthorn characteristics that make the Red, Whiteand Roan so great. These include reproductive traits, productive life, hardiness, calving ease, efficiency and overall versatility.

HISTORY

The AMSS Genetic Expansion program was designed by Dr. Clint Meadows of Michigan State University in the

1960’s using Mendelian genetics for percentage calculations. Within his design, any level crossed to the same level (EXP x EXP) was penalized and the offspring were dropped a level (EXP x EXP = GE). This was done to encourage breeders to work back towards higher breed purity. When the initial program was adopted by the AMSS Board of Directors in the early 1980’s any dairy breed outside of Holstein was penalized with an extra step involved in reaching full herdbook status (37000 registration numbers).

At the 2001 AMSS National Convention held in Cortland, New York the AMSS Board of Directors made some major changes to how the Genetic Expansion program worked (with major dissent from some influential breeders). First, the extra step (37000 registration number) requirement for non-Holstein dairy breeds was removed. All dairy breeds were welcomed into the AMSS herdbook at an equal level. Secondly, the penalty for crossing the same herdbook level (EXP x EXP) was removed.

NUMBERS

There are six levels within the current AMSS herdbook, initially linked to breed percentages (see below). Recent calculations of around 700 pedigrees are shown as a comparison.

Level NATIVE FULL HERDBOOK EXPANDED HERDBOOK GENETIC EXPANSION GENETIC IDENTITY GRADE /AOB

These numbers include many older animals and genetic lines that have influenced the breed. Looking at the 2022 AMSS Sire Catalog for a smaller example, using currently available genetics, there are 36 full herdbook bulls who average 76.3% Milking Shorthorn and 21 EXP bulls which average 63.1%. These numbers are well under the purity levels that the original genetic expansion plan was aiming for and what Dr. Meadows laid out.

The breeding chart information below will go into effect June 1, 2024.

If you have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to the office or any AMSS director. Thankyou,

Holstein Canada Announces Travel Surcharge to Each Classification Visit

Due to the current economic environment, The Board of Directors of Holstein Canada approved a travel surcharge of $30 to each classification visit. This will be effective August 8th, 2022. As a national member organization, it is important to be fair and equitable across the country.

The travel surcharge is a temporary measure to address the high increase in national fuel costs and other travel related expenses since the beginning of this year. It will show as a separate line item on your invoice. The Association will continue to revisit the surcharge relative to the national cost of fuel and other travel costs.

Jeff Ziegler Receives Award For Meritorious Service From UsJersey

Jeff Ziegler, Ostrander, Ohio, received the Award for Meritorious Service given by the American Jersey Cattle Association and the National All-Jersey Inc. in ceremonies June 24, 2022, during the association’s 154th Annual Meeting in Portland, Oregon.

The Award for Meritorious Service is presented to an individual or family who has made notable contributions to the advancement of the Jersey breed and the livelihood of Jersey owners in the United States through research, education, development, marketing or other significant activities of the allied dairy industry.

For the past 38 years, Ziegler has been responsible for developing the Jersey sire program at Select Sires, located in Plain City, Ohio. In 1987, Ziegler began his career as a sire analyst and manager of the Select Mating Service and the colored breed evaluation and bull procurement program at Select Sires. At that time, the cooperative was sampling only 10 young bulls. Ziegler helped Select Sires develop the Aggressive Reproductive Technologies (ART) program. The cooperative now samples more than 60 young Jersey bulls each year. He currently serves as the vice president of dairy cattle breeding.

Ziegler’s impact on the Jersey breed can been seen in the bulls he acquired and helped develop at Select Sires. He selected and acquired Mason Boomer Sooner Berretta shortly after he became a sire analyst. Berretta was the breed’s top Production Type Bull in July 1993 and stayed at the top of the list until August 1998. He is the most heavily used Jersey sire of all time and has been credited as an influencer for increased protein production in the breed. In addition to Berretta, Ziegler acquired other breed changing bulls such as: Soldierboy Boomer Sooner of CJF, Highland Magic Duncan, Sooner Centurion, Lester Sambo, All Lynns Louie Valentino as well as others who have influenced and changed the breed.

Beyond his job, Ziegler has impacted the Jersey breed by serving on the AJCA Type Advisory committee and the All American Show committee. He currently chairs the dairy sire committee of the National Association of Animal Breeders and has been a member of its inherited biochemical defect committee which oversees and investigates negative genetic recessive traits and biochemical defects. He has judged national shows as well as shows in South America and Australia. Ziegler earned a degree in dairy science in 1985 from The Ohio State University.

The American Jersey Cattle Association was organized in 1868 to improve and promote the Jersey breed. Since 1957, National All-Jersey Inc. has served Jersey owners by promoting the increased production and sale of Jersey milk and milk products. Klussendorf Association Announces Scholarships

The Klussendorf Association and the McKown/Klussendorf Fund announce the recipients of seven $1500 scholarships to be presented at the Dairy Shrine Awards Banquet during World Dairy Expo.

Award winners are in their first, second or third year of study at a two or four-year college or university in the U.S. or Canada, majoring in a field that will lead them to a career in the dairy industry. These exemplary students demonstrate the highest level of leadership, participation in extracurricular activities and a special interest in showing dairy cattle in their true-to-breed form.

Klussendorf Scholarship

The Klussendorf Scholarship was made possible through a gift from the late Chris Kampf, along with other members of the Klussendorf Association. This award is representative of the late, legendary showman and dairy cattle fitter Arthur B. Klussendorf. The association honors those who most nearly exemplify his character and ethics. Three students each receive a $1500 award.

Awna Hirsch from Eaton, Colorado is a sophomore at the University of Minnesota. Hirsch played an active role in many aspects of her family’s dairy farm, from raising, training and showing dairy cattle, to assisting with vet checks and calves. Her most recent leadership experience includes serving as the National Brown Swiss Association Alternate Youth Ambassador.

Kylie Konyn of Escondido, California is another Klussendorf Scholarship winner. A freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Konyn has personally financed her own 150-cow herd of registered Holsteins and Jerseys. Among other accomplishments, she has served as the National Jersey Queen and received recognition as a Young Distinguished Junior Member.

The final Klussendorf Scholarship winner is Haley Beukema of New Richmond, Wisconsin. Beukema is a Freshman at the University of Minnesota whose work with dairy cattle began at nine years old. Her fitting expertise has taken her to several different farms for classification, district and state shows, and World Dairy Expo. Through the Guernsey Association Beukema has served as both an advocate for the industry and a leader for other youth.

McKown Scholarship

Friends and family of the late Robert “Whitey” McKown established the McKown scholarship to honor the 1992 Honorary Klussendorf recipient and long-time Holstein enthusiast. Four students will receive $1,500 scholarships.

One 2022 recipient is Kylie Nickels of Watertown, Wisconsin. As a Junior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Nickels manages a heifer boarding business, Dreamfix Boarding, along with her brother. Throughout her dairy career, she has worked with Crescentmead Holsteins, Mattreana Dairy, Great Northern Land and Cattle Company and Budjon Farms. Nickels has also been actively involved in 4-H, FFA, Junior Holsteins and several collegiate organizations.

Another winner is Jack Hammock of Chatham, Virginia. Hammock grew up on his family’s large Holstein dairy operation and plans to return to the farm upon graduation from Virginia Tech University. Between judging with the Virginia Tech Dairy Cattle Judging Team and exhibiting in state and district Holstein shows, he has taken advantage of several opportunities to learn all he can about the dairy industry.

Laurel Gray of Stony Point, North Carolina will also receive a McKown Scholarship. Gray is a sophomore at North Carolina State University who grew up on her family’s dairy farm. She has competed with notable results at several dairy cattle judging contests and has been exhibiting dairy cattle at the local, state and regional level since the age of five. Gray’s family takes pride in environmental sustainability and excellent animal comfort practices on their farm.

The final recipient is Rosalee Zehr of Pontiac, Illinois. Currently a sophomore at Kaskaskia College, Zehr hopes to return to her family’s farm. She’d like to play a role in keeping the ever-changing milking and feeding technologies sustainable for farms like her family’s fourth generation dairy. She has earned numerous honors in dairy cattle judging and served in leadership roles for Kaskaskia College Ag Club, FFA and her local township.

August 1 Is Deadline For Jersey Junior Show Transfers

Attention all Junior members and parents.

A reminder that Monday, August 1 is the deadline to have your Registered Jerseys transferred to be eligible to show at the All American Junior Jersey Show.

Here are the steps a junior (under 20 years of age) needs to take in order to show a Jersey at all shows. Can an animal be leased or does the animal need to be transferred into the junior’s ownership?

The answer is simple: File a transfer of ownership so that the junior is listed as a Recorded Owner on the registration certificate.

Ownership rules vary from state to state. Some do allow leasing. Others allow animals to be registered in the farm name, but require that paperwork be completed and filed certifying that an animal is the junior’s 4-H or FFA project.

What about the All American Junior Jersey Show, the biggest junior Jersey show of the year?

The ownership policy is as follows:

  • Animals are eligible when recorded by the American Jersey Cattle Association in the Herd Register or with Generation Count 4 or greater, or by Jersey Canada with registry status of 93.75% and greater.
  • The exhibitor must be listed as Recorded Owner on the registration certificate, either (1) as the sole owner or (2) by his/her name in joint ownership. If the joint ownership includes more than one person meeting the eligibility requirements of Rule 1 (above), one of them must be declared as the exhibitor during check-in.
  • Animals must be registered and/or transferred to meet one of the above ownership requirements on or before August 1, 2022. The recording date is the postmark date and will be considered the date of registration and/or transfer.

To read more about the implementation of Generation Count for national shows, please visit the USJersey website for more information.

So, submit the transfer of ownership as soon as you figure out which animals are going to be the projects this year. That one step will save you the effort of researching the exhibitor ownership requirements for all the shows you are considering.

A final note: Exhibitors at the All American Junior Jersey Show are also required to be members (junior or lifetime) of the American Jersey Cattle Association. Applications for membership are available online at USJersey.com.
