April 2015 US Genetic Evaluation Highlights

The April 2015 Genetic Evaluations were anything but quiet.  With six new sires in the top 10 TPI sires, there are certainly many changes and many new sires to cover.  So let’s get started….

Top 10 Proven TPI Sires

#1. Supersire

007HO11351
Seagull-Bay Supersire-ET   TY
Robust x Planet x Shottle

With his first official daughter proof, Seagull-Bay Supersire not only validates his high genomics numbers (+2581 gTPI in April of 2012) but he actually outperforms it (+2613 gTPI April 2014).  (Read more: Top 10 Genomic TPI Young Sires Review – April 2012) When you factor in the base change that occurred in August 2015, Supersire’s genomic PTAT proof of 2.78 (1.78 with rollback) was spot on with his current 1.77.  Expect Supersire to leave daughters that are all around solid cows.  While not show stoppers, he has a no holes type linear and strong production that make him a strong commercial sire.  He has had a tremendous impact on genetics around the world.  Supersire is living up to our prediction that he is a generational sire that will have a huge influence for years to come.  (Read more: The 12 Genomic Sires Most Likely to Top the Proven TPI List in April 2016)

#2. Mogul

007HO11314
Mountfield Ssi Dcy Mogul-ET TR TY
Dorcy BY x Marsh x O Man

While Mogul’s numbers held steady from his initial daughter proof last round, there are some concerns about Mogul’s type info in Canada (Dropped 8 points). But with 313 daughters in 130 herds (97%) in the US where Mogul is a solid +2.85 compared to 53 daughters in 34 herds (82% Rel) in Canada where is a +8 conformation, breeders can expect Mogul to be more like his US proof than his CDN one.  The area of greatest variance between the two evaluations is his dairy strength.  In Canada, Mogul is a -1 for dairy strength while in the US he is +1.87 for Dairy Form and +0.88 for Body depth.  You will need to watch the SCS score as well as the DPR when using Mogul. Like Supersire, Mogul and his brother Mixer trace back to the WESSWOOD-HC RUDY MISSY EX-92-3E USA DOM GMD that has now proven to not only deliver superior genomic sires, but now also now has impact on the top proven sire list.

#3. Robust

007HO10524
Roylane Socra Robust-ET TR
Socrates x O Man x Manat

Like a fine wine, Robust gets better with age.  Since receiving his first proven daughter proof way back in August of 2012, Robust has increased his gTPI by 235 points and now stands at +2517 and holds the #3 proven sire slot in the US.  Not only did  Robust  prove himself as a high genomic young sire, then a proven sire, but now, with sons like Supersire, he is showing that he deserves to be ranked up with sires such as Planet and Man-O-Man. He joins those sires that can deliver impact sons in the genomic era.  While they are not high conformation, based on type classification, they are certainly cows that last (+7.5 PL).  (Read more: SHE AIN’T PRETTY – SHE JUST MILKS THAT WAY!)

#4. Day

001HO10458
Minnigan-Hills Day-ET   TY
Super x Bolton x Shottle

For those of you who asking   if top genomic sires end up as the top proven sires, Day makes the third   sire from  the top 10 genomic sires of  April 2012 that are now in the top 10 proven sires. Mogul and Supersire are the other two.  Day is the #2 new release sire this round.  As we predicted in April 2012, Day daughters have proven to have greater dairy strength than his initial genomic proof would have predicted. (Read more: The 12 Genomic Sires Most Likely to Top the Proven TPI List in April 2016) Also, as predicted, Day’s official daughter proof for production is slightly lower than his genomic values though they are still very solid.

#5. Marcelon

001HO10175
Morningview Marcelon Cri-ET   TY
Freddie x Shottle x Champion

Another new graduate to the list is Marcelon Cri.  While certainly not 2012 genomic list topper, he was within that striking range that we tell breeders to watch for (10% or 250 gTPI points).  Mercelon outperformed his genomic proof for components and especially for his DPR and conception rates.  Much like his sire, Freddie, Marcelon daughters will not wow you with their conformation, but they last (+4.6 PL).  They have great udders with close teat placements and strong feet and legs.  One area you will want to protect Marcelon on is his angularity. His daughters are more round than they are sharp (to use aAa terms).

#6. Mixer

007HO11313
Mountfield Ssi Dcy Mixer-ET   TY
Dorcy BY x Marsh x O Man

Mixer moves up from number #12 last time to #6 this round.  His proof increased 123 lbs. of milk, 14 lbs. of fat and 8 lbs. of protein. He held steady on his conformation proof. This full brother to Mogul is proving that the apple does not fall far from the tree.  Mixer and Mogul are excellent examples of the best way to utilize genomics.  Here you have two full brothers that, under the pre-genomic era of sampling sires, we would not have known which one was better.  But, as genomics predicted in August of 2012, Mogul is the better of the two sires though both are outstanding sires.  The question now becomes, “Will Mixer get the opportunity that Mogul has had to become an impact sire?”

#7. Moonboy

007HO11279
De-Su Dorcy Moonboy 954-ET TR TY
Dorcy BY x Shottle x O Man

Can you have too much of a good thing?  Well, don’t tell that to Select Sires.  Moonboy ranks   5th of their 7 sires in the top ten TPI proven sires for Select. He was (3rd among new release as well.  Like Mixer, Moonboy is the lesser known of a famous brother, Mccutchen.  Though, unlike Mixer, Moonboy actually now stands ahead (though just slightly) of his famous brother.  (+2396 vs +2379).   Sully Shottle May-TW EX-90 DOM is proving to be a can’t- miss dam of sires,  with sons Manitoba, Predestine, Mayfield, AltaMeteor, and Mexico all receiving outstanding proofs.  Moonboy has a solid all-around proof though he will certainly need to be protected on his fat, straightness of legs and rump angle.

#8. McCutchen

007HO11477
De-Su Bkm McCutchen 1174-ET   TY
Bookem x Shottle x O Man

The 4th new release sire for Select Sires in the top 10, McCutchen comes as no surprise to most breeders. While he did not hold his lofty +2547 gTPI,  he is still an outstanding +2379, good for #8 on the proven sire list just behind his brother Moonboy and slightly ahead of his sire Bookem, who stands at  9th on the list.  MCCUTCHEN`s daughters show the potential he has to sire extreme balance between solid production and outstanding conformation.  McCutchen is a high type sire that also delivers calving ease and solid health traits.

#9. (T) Bookem

007HO10721
De-Su 521 Bookem-ET  TR TY
Planet x Ramos x AltaHershel

Dropping from the #3 spot last round to tied for #9 this time would have you think that Bookem must have had a significant decline in his overall numbers.  In fact, he only lost 40 points. However, with so many new sires coming out, he dropped in the rankings. Bookem sires extreme production and offers breed leading protein and milk, with strong health and fertility traits.  Bookem’s type breakdown shows that the only significant protection he needs on his rumps.

#9. (T) Numero Uno

200HO07450
Amighetti Numero Uno TVLy   TY
Man-O-Man x Shottle x Boss Iron

Rounding out the top 10 is Amighetti Numero Uno.  As expected, Numero Uno’s production continued to drop. It now stands -399 Milk.  (Read more: US December 2014 Genetic Evaluations Highlights )  His overall proof was bolstered by an increase in %F and a slight increase in %P.   Numero Uno also received his first official proof in Canada, where he stands #17 on the Proven LPI list.  Expect him to sire outstanding type improvement, specifically udders and legs, but he certainly needs to be protected on his overall production.

Top Genomic Sires over 1 Year of Age

#1. Director

151HO01602
Mr Pre Director 57512-ET
Predestine x Robust x Planet

Heading the list of top sires over one year of age is Director.  He is yet another outstanding son from Miss Ocd Robst Delicious-ET VG-86 DOM.  Delicious is proving herself as an outstanding producer of high genomic progeny, similar to the likes of Ammon-Peachey Shauna-ET VG-87 and Sully Shottle May-TW EX-90 DOM.   While not as lofty in type numbers as some of the top genomic sires, Director will sire solid mammary systems and feet and legs, though he will need to be protected on his dairy strength (body depth, stature and chest width).  He will also need to be protected on his rump angle and loin strength.   He will sire high component improvement as well as outstanding productive life and conception traits.

#2. Delta

203HO01468
Mr Mogul Delta 1427-ET   TY
Mogul x Robust x Planet

Standing tall and holding his #2 spot on the top genomic sires over a year of age is Delta. Delta is the Mogul brother to Director from Miss Ocd Robst Delicious-ET VG-86 DOM. Delta has extremely high ratings for CM$ 899 and milk (1487), fat (90), protein (52), PL (8.0) and SCS (2.84). Delta should sire strong mammary system improvement, specifically rear udder height and attachments and also solid feet and legs.  Delta will need to be protected on his body depth and overall stature.

#3. Denver 1426

151HO00690
Mr Mogul Denver 1426-ET   TY
Mogul x Robust x Planet

With Denver, it is a trifecta for Miss Ocd Robst Delicious-ET VG-86 DOM for genomic sires over a year of age.  Denver 1426 is the full brother to Delta.  At over 2 points on all type composites and over 2,000 lbs. of milk and positive components, Denver 1426 is in elite company.  For those looking to sire high scoring two-year-olds, they will need to protect him on the height of front end and body depth.

The Bullvine Bottom Line

With Powerball-P holding on to the top polled sire status and Archrival standing tall as the top genomic type sire, just ahead of Atwood the top proven type sire, there weren’t significant changes on these lists. With so many new proven sires coming from the high genomic sire ranks and many full brothers proving themselves, the April 2015 US genetic evaluations were certainly a strong validation for genomics.

30 Sires that will produce Feed Efficient Cows

2013ecttop13of2013Commercial milk producers want to breed cows that have high feed conversion efficiency, that avoid culling and that take the least care or staff time (Read more – Feed Efficiency: The Money Saver).  The well known and widely used total merit indexes, TPI*TM  and LPI, rank sires according to which ones leave the most profitable ideal or true type cow. However the factors in those indexes and the assumptions that are made when calculating them do not address feed, culling or low maintenance.   Milk producers are left to fend for themselves when it comes to selecting sires that will leave their kind of cows.

What’s Being Heard

Milk Producers say: “All I want is a trouble free cow that efficiently converts forages to the kind of milk my milk buyer wants.

Veterinarians say:  “Cows must get in calf, have minimal feet problems and must not be prone to having production limiting diseases (reproduction problems, mastitis, metabolic disorders or  ..etc.).

Farm Workers say:  “Sick animals, calving problems and animals that do not work easily within the farm system waste my time.

Feed Advisers say: “Test your forages, feed the rumen, get the most out of your forages and the use of nutrients for both production and maintenance must be considered simultaneously (i.e. medium sized cows yielding the same as large cows are more feed efficient).

Milk Processors say: ”Except for the milk we sell as a drink, we want the solids not the water.

Financial Advisers say:  “Make decisions based on profit per cow, per litre, per hectare, per pound of feed consumed, per worker, …etc.

Consumers say: – Well in fact we may not be listening to consumers (Read more – Milk Marketing: How “Got Milk?” became “Got Lost”)

There are even more voices speaking in producers ears and more words appearing on the computer screens that producers read.  With all the information that is currently available, selecting sires that best meet the needs of milk producers can be a daunting task.

Getting Started

Milk producers do not wish to deal all the numbers that appear on proof sheets. That can be a very time consuming exercise with no definitive answers at the end of it.

The Bullvine decided to research what is available today on selecting sires for feed conversion efficiency, for freedom from major known reasons for culling and for minimal extra care. We recognize that down the road there will be genomic indexes that are based on the relationship between yet to be recorded on-farm cow performance data and the DNA make-up of cows for these three areas. But today those genomic indexes do not exist.

Bullvine Efficiency Index (BEI)

Based on the information from a number of countries that we have been able to access, the Bullvine has developed the following formulas:

  1. BEI = Production (45%) + Durability (35%) + Health & Fertility (25%)
  2. Production = 30 Fat Yield + 50 Protein Yield + 10 Fat% + 10 Protein%
  3. Durability = 17 Herd Life + 42 Mammary System + 25 Feet & Legs  – 8 Body Depth – 8 Stature
  4. Health & Fertility = 46 Somatic Cell + 23 Daughter Fertility + 23 Udder Depth + 8 Milking Speed

Notes:

  1. Milk Yield is not included as it contributes to more udder strain and added milk haulage or on-farm water removal costs.
  2. The negative weightings on Body Depth and Stature reflect that larger cows  require extra feed to grow to that size and to maintain that larger size each and every day compared to cows of more moderate size.

Please note: Due to the fact that CDN’s Custom Index tool only allows quires by Domestic Canadian, MACE and Genomic individually it is not possible to do an overall ranking.

Key Findings

  • Except for the Domestic Canadian list only a small difference exist between bulls
  • The rankings do not always follow TPI* TM or LPI due mainly to the negative weighting on body depth and stature and increased emphasis on SCS, daughter fertility and udder depth.
  • Although Braedale Goldwyn, Sandy Valley Bolton and Picton Shottle progeny are prominent on these listings, they are from different cow families so inbreeding using the sires on these lists should not be a problem, providing a breeder does not focus on just one of them

Highlights

  • Braedale Goldwyn appears on the listings himself. As well he has six sons on the lists and is the maternal grandsire of three of the genomic bulls.
  • Sandy Valley Bolton has seven sons on the listings
  • Picton Shottle is the maternal grandsire of nine bulls on the listings
  • Oman sons Long-Langs Oman Oman and Badger-Bluff Fanny Freddie both appear on the listings, as do one son and one maternal grandson of each of them
  • De-Su Observer, yet to be daughter proven, has three sons and one maternal grandson on the genomics listing

The Bullvine Bottom Line

Commercial milk producers often want the decisions on which sires to use to be as simplified as possible. That is why the Bullvine has produced these BEI listings. With due consideration to avoid inbreeding, milk producers can expect BEI to rank bulls for them for production, durability and health & fertility with emphasis on the sires that can convert intake into milk production.

Top BPI Heifers From Around the World

Since the DNA revolution (i.e. Genomics) AI organizations worldwide are more and more frequently using heifers as bull dams.  With so many different countries and different systems it’s hard to determine just what heifers truly are the best in the world.  We here at the Bullvine decided to bring some clarity.  The following is our analysis.

There are many different indexes and each index offers “home field advantage” to animals that are tested and developed within that country.  It is hard to compare animals from around the world on one single ranking.  It seemed logical   to develop the Bullvine Performance Index (BPI).  In the BPI we use direct genomic values instead of parent averages and we also incorporate reliabilities, in order to account for animals whose indexes stand the best chance of being stable over time.  As far as what traits we looked at, we have used an equally balanced weighting between production, longevity and health and fertility, as we see that emphasis represents where the market is heading.  Instead of trying to be reactionary to the marketplace like most composite indexes, we are trying to be leading and ahead of the market.  We also are publishing BPI as a percentage so that it is clear just how far apart each animal is from each other.  Since this is a ranking index we felt it was more important to show the range between animals than to give a number that technically means nothing.

Key Findings

  • By far the leading breeder of the top 50 was De-Su with 11 heifers on the list, followed by Select Sires with 6 and Sandy Valley with 4. There is no question that De-Su has been pushing the genetic accelerator to the max and this dominance of the list demonstrates the success they have been having.
  • 36 of the top 50 animals are from the USA and 9 of the top 10.  Canada follows with 11 and Germany with 2.  This is mostly an indicator of how the national indexes (TPI and LPI) differ.  Since TPI and Net-Merit in the US have more health and fertility in them, and breeders tend to breed towards the national index, it’s understandable that the USA would dominate our list since we have put so much more emphasis on health and fertility.
  • Numero Uno leads the way with 17 daughters on our list including the top 4 animals.  He is followed by Epic with 5 and Mogul with 4.  Considering Numero Uno’s ability to consistently leave progeny whose DGV’s are higher than their parent averages and combining that with his high health and fertility and balanced genomic indexes, it’s not surprising that he would dominate the list.
  • Man-O-Man is the maternal grand sire of 10 animals on the list (Read more – Man-O-Man will he turn platinum?) followed by Planet with 9.  It is interestingly to note that the 3rd and 4th on the list, Observer and Superstition would have been test sires at time of mating.

Highlights

  • Topping our list is SANDY-VALLEY NU PENELOPE.  Penelope is the Uno daughter of the #12 GTPI cow in the USA PINE-TREE MONICA PLANETA-ET VG-85-2YR.  Planeta is starting to become the next genomic superstar to join the likes of Ammon Peachy Shauna.  She is consistently able to produce progeny that are chart toppers and well above their parent averages.  In fact Planeta has 4 daughters on our list.
  • 2nd on our list comes from the Sully Shottle May family, DE-SU UNO 2145. 2145’s dam is an Observer daughter of May who just turned 2yrs old herself.    2145 is a great example of how De-Su is pushing the genetic advancement and, if we hadn’t incorporated reliabilities into our index, would have been #1 on our list.  But since her dam is yet to score and produce a milk record and she has 2 generations of genomic sires, her reliabilities are lower than Penelope’s.
  • The top Canadian animal on our list is STE ODILE MOON MODEL AMALUNA.  Amaluna recently sold in TAG’s Genomic Power Sale for $110,000 (Read more – TAG’s Genomic Power Sale Averages an Outstanding $30,167).  Amaluna is the #5 GPA LPI heifer in Canada. Her Man-O-Man dam is due to calve in January 2013 but her 2nd dam is LES091 BAXTER MODEL RUBIS  VG-87-3YR-CAN who is the #27 GLPI Cow in Canada. This heifer has it all – production, durability, health and fertility as well as a very advanced sire stack, Moon x Man-O-Man x Baxter x Goldwyn.
  • The top European animal on our list is HFP LUCETTE.  From Denmark this heifer traces back to the Lou Etta family from the US.  Lucette is also the #1 TPI animal from Europe and is actually only 76 gTPI points behind the #1 gTPI animal in the world De-Su 1438.

The Bullvine Bottom Line

With genomic indexes coming out monthly and each country having their own index with apparent bias, it can be very hard to keep track of all the top animals and compare them accurately.  Comparisons are instructive for informed decision making. That is why we developed the BPI formula.  As is evident from our analysis of the top heifers from around the world, there is no question that the USA is leading the way when it comes to the bull dams of the future and that breeding programs like De-Su, Select Sires and Sandy Valley are at the front of that charge.

MAN-O-MAN will he turn Platinum?

As we approach the next index release day, December 4, The Bullvine is hearing considerable speculation about Man O Man, the #2 GTPI daughter proven bull and the top GTPI bull with second crop daughters. Many expect that he will be the top total index daughter proven sire in many countries. What people differ on is will he merely exceed all others or whether he will significantly outdistance the field. The Bullvine decided to summarize some of the highlights and some of the facts as we know them today.

Man O Man died during his waiting period and so his semen was always in limited supply and therefore he was used primarily on high indexing females. Of course we all know that second crops proof for bulls whose semen is higher priced or in limited supply can often result in elevated values in a second country as the analysis can not totally remove the high merit of the mates nor any preferential treatment of daughters.  The fact remains Man O Man progeny are performing extremely well in many countries and his daughters are in demand.

Man O Man Sons

Man O Man does not have any daughter proven sons. Quite likely daughter proven sons will not be available for another 2.5 to 3 years.

Man O Man’s top ten sons in the USA for PA GTPI are:

  1. Amighetti Numero Uno – 2587
  2. Ladys-Manor Man-O-Shan – 2522
  3. Texel Beauty Cosmo – 2451
  4. Holbrick-ML Limocar – 2421

It is too late to start using Man O Man as his semen supply is nearly exhausted. However, most AI organizations have used him as a sire of sons or have sons from Man O Man daughters. Breeders who have already used him like their hard working trouble free Man O Man daughters that are above average for functional traits. They may show a bit of Oman’s rounder turn of rib and lack of style but they are significantly better that Oman’s for median suspensor and dairy quality. One profit oriented milk producer recently summed it up quite well for the Bullvine – “I could milk a whole herd with only Man O Man daughters in it”.
