What most didn’t know was that Telstar carried the rare “Black-Red gene.” There was just one problem: Telstar had been exported to Japan.

Schrago located two precious units of semen on the other side of the Pacific and arranged their importation for $2,500—serious money in 1971. Neither do thousands of elite Red & White animals milking in herds around the world today.
