Select Sires Names Ellerbrock and Santillanez Training Services Program Managers

Select Sires is excited to announce the hiring of Rick Ellerbrock of West Salem, Ohio and Ernesto Santillanez of Ada, Ohio as Eastern regional managers of Select Reproductive Solutions® (SRS®). These gentlemen will administer reproductive-based technical service and communications, develop and coordinate employee training, and provide sales support and solutions for Select Sires’ dairy and beef customer-owners located in the Eastern half of the United States and Canada.

Ellerbrock has been an employee of COBA/Select Sires in Ohio since 2005 and has served the cooperative as a large-herd technician. He was promoted to reproductive solutions specialist in 2011 and in 2013 he was promoted to regional sales manager. Ellerbrock has extensive experience conducting genetic audits, genomic testing, and reproductive analysis; skills he has used to advance the profitability and sustainability of dairies throughout the COBA/Select Sires sales territory. Ellerbrock is a 2005 graduate of The Ohio State University where he received a Bachelor of Science in agriculture, with a major in animal science and a minor in production agriculture.

“Rick’s service to our customer-owners throughout the past 15 years has provided him with the experience and skills that will prove invaluable as he works with our technicians and service teams to help serve customer-owners across the Eastern U.S. and Canada,” said Todd Kranz, chief development officer for Select Sires Inc.

Santillanez comes to Select Sires with 20 years of experience working in the dairy industry. He brings expertise in employee management and training to his new position. For the past five years, he has held various positions with AFIMILK. Most recently he conducted application support and sales for the Eastern United States, Canada, and South America. Santillanez was born and raised in California. He later managed his father-in-law’s large dairy in Lovington, New Mexico as well as dairy herds in the Southwest United States and Central Ohio. His bilingual skills are extremely valuable as he will collaborate with Hispanic labor in their native language to provide training or troubleshoot reproductive issues.

“We are very pleased that Ernesto is joining the Select Sires team and we look forward to having him use his experience with very large herds, as well as the technical skills acquired in his most recent roles to assist our service teams in serving the cooperative’s customer-owners,” said Kranz.

Based in Plain City, Ohio, Select Sires Inc., is the largest global A.I. cooperative and is comprised of six farmer-owned and -controlled local organizations in the United States. As the industry leader, it provides highly fertile semen, as well as excellence in service and programs to supply dairy and beef producers with the world’s best genetics.

Jump in use of sexed dairy semen in Great Britain

Sales of sexed dairy semen accounted for just over half of dairy semen sales in the year to March 2020, jumping up from a 32% share the previous year. At the same time, there has been an increase in proportion of beef semen sales, now up to nearly 48%. This information comes from a survey of GB semen companies carried out by AHDB’s animal genetics team.

The use of sexed dairy semen has seen particular growth over the last three years. This is thought to be in part due to improvements in success rates and more competitive prices relative to conventional semen. However, the increasing scrutiny and rules around dairy bull calves is likely to have encouraged the recent jumps in sexed semen sales.

We have also seen beef semen take an increasing share of semen sales. This ties in with the increased use of sexed dairy semen – with fewer cows needed to provide replacement heifers, more cows can be serviced with beef semen for a more profitable beef calf.

The survey results have also been used to make crude estimates of the share of each type of calf born. Here we can see the increasing share of beef calves – from about a quarter of calves born in 2012 to nearly half in the latest year. In the same time, dairy bulls have gone from a third to just 15%.

While there has been a notable shift in heifers coming from conventional to sexed dairy semen, the overall share of heifers has also changed, with estimates declining from 41% to 37% of calves born over the last 8 years. The overall size of the dairy herd is declining long-term, meaning fewer heifers are needed to act as replacements. However, increased milk yields over the same period have counterbalanced the effect of a smaller milking herd on milk production.

Premier Select Sires Welcomes the Voice of Cooperative Members

Premier Select Sires has formed a brand-new discovery group, which will be known as the Premier Owner’s Voice (POV), to gain insight and input from cooperative members. POV will involve all types and sizes of cooperative members to represent the more than 14,000 unique member purchasers across 23 states.

“There is no question that our industry continues to rapidly change,” said Mark Carpenter, Chief Executive Officer of Premier. “The health of our cooperative is dependent on our ability to learn and adapt to those changes. And beyond that, we need to meet—and exceed—our members’ expectations and needs going forward. This means exploring avenues of new technology, enhancing customer reach, and improving cooperative efficiencies, among other things. To accomplish those goals, we’re relying on a strong partnership with members of the Premier Owner’s Voice to generate ideas and talk about objectives. These are exciting times for Premier Select Sires!”

Members of the inaugural group include producers from Maine to Florida to Kansas, and they will serve a one-year term. Participants include dairy and beef producers from a variety of operational sizes and styles. These individuals will meet throughout the year to learn, share and strategize, giving a true voice to membership and strengthening the Premier cooperative in the process. Karen Wheatley, Premier Manager of Employee Development, Training, and Engagement, will facilitate the meetings.

“Being a cooperative doesn’t get enough attention these days, and I think we’re missing the mark when we aren’t celebrating this independence,” said Carpenter. “Not only does our cooperative return dividends to member purchasers, but with the formation of the Premier Owner’s Voice, we’re becoming better in the service we provide and better in the success we deliver because we’re doing this together.”

Any questions about the groups, or questions about becoming future POV members, can be directed to CEO Mark Carpenter (mcarpenter@premierselect.com), Vice President of Marketing and Development Kirk Sattazahn (kirk7@premierselect.com), or the Premier Select Sires office (570-836-3168).

GENEX Launches Virtual Learning for Global Audience

On May 18, GENEX kicked off a live and illuminating virtual learning experience for Spanish-speaking dairy producers around the globe. For the first of six sessions, the experience – deemed GENEX Hard-Wired – drew more than 130 participants from 10 countries.

“We are excited for the opportunity this virtual learning program provides to our members and customers across the world. With the click of a button, this program is connecting dairy producers with world-class industry experts,” states Anne Davison, GENEX Director of Dairy Sales Support. “This program is helping dairy producers build their skills and be their best self for their future and for their next generation.”

While born out of necessity – as COVID-19 caused the cancellation of an in-person GENEX Academy training – GENEX Hard-Wired is providing even more producers the opportunity to build their knowledge.

These producers are hearing from industry experts who are sharing cutting-edge research, technologies and practices within the dairy industry. Topics include reproduction, genetics, colostrum management, disease prevention & management during the transition period and leadership skills.

“These sessions cover the latest topics impacting dairy producers,” states Davison. “The diverse portfolio of topics will help producers raise healthy calves, navigate the critical periods in a cow’s life, and make the most out of their genetic decisions.”

Unique to this program, participants also receive a one-year subscription to dairylearning.com, an industry-leading progressive dairy hub. This website, with its ever-growing number of courses in multiple languages, is the go-to location for information and training within the dairy industry.

Select Sires to Award Three Research Grants

For more than four decades, Select Sires Inc. has supported research efforts to benefit the dairy and beef industries through the Competitive Research Grants Program. Overseen by the cooperative’s board of directors, the intent and overall goals of this program have remained largely unchanged since its inception.

“We hope that this program continues to allow for the dissemination of novel research to collectively benefit agriculture, train future scientists for public and private settings and positively impact the production and efficiency of the cattle industries,” says Bo Harstine, Ph.D, director of research at Select Sires Inc.

The principle investigators of the three proposals selected for funding in 2020 are Mark Hanigan, Ph.D., Jordan Thomas, Ph.D., Pedro Fontes, Ph.D. and Tomer Avidor-Reiss, Ph.D.

Hanigan is a professor in the dairy science department at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. His research project is titled, “A system to assess feeding efficiency on commercial robotic dairies.”

Thomas and Fontes will collaborate as co-investigators on their proposal titled, “Enhancing control of the estrous cycle among Bos indicus-influenced beef cows.” Thomas is an assistant extension professor in the animal sciences department at the University of Missouri, while Fontes is an assistant professor at the University of Georgia’s animal and dairy science department.

Avidor-Reiss is a professor in the department of biological science and the department of urology at the University of Toledo. His research project is titled, “Molecular markers for centriole remodeling in bovine reproduction.”

Select Sires Inc. congratulates these esteemed recipients of the Competitive Research Grants Program. As an active member of the scientific and agricultural communities, Select Sires Inc. designates resources to fund basic and applied research in academic settings for the advancement of cattle reproduction and genetics. Throughout the previous decades, the findings from these studies have allowed Select Sires to better serve customer-owners and ultimately, ensure the success of dairy and beef producers around the world.

Premier Select Sires Announces Staff Changes

Several changes to the Premier Select Sires management team will take place in the coming weeks and months. Premier excitedly announces that Brad Barham will join the team as the Southern Regional Sales Manager, David Whitlock will retire his position as the current Southern Regional Marketing Manager, and Kirk Sattazahn will become Vice President of Marketing and Development.

Brad Barham has accepted the position of Premier Regional Sales Manager for the Southern Region. Barham will bring with him years of experience in the agriculture and A.I. industries, as well as a forward-thinking and innovative attitude.

Barham was raised on a 200-head registered Jersey dairy in Southeast Tennessee. After earning a degree in finance and management, he built a career working with the American Jersey Cattle Association, River Valley Farm, and most recently, All West/Select Sires as the California Sales Manager. In three years of working at All West, Barham’s impact has been great. Specifically, he led the cooperative to tremendous growth in the Jersey business, increasing sales, market share, and customer reach; he impacted the Holstein business, specifically with his ideas centered on sex sorted semen and the NxGEN program; and he worked with his team members to help them learn and apply the Optimal Genetic Pathways (OGP) program, and provided great support to the field implementation of OGP. Barham says he looks forward to the opportunity to work closely with the great member-owners of Premier Select Sires as he transitions into his new role with Premier in July.

“We are very excited to have Brad join the management team,” said Mark Carpenter, CEO of Premier Select Sires. “His knowledge, experience, and proven track record of innovative adaptation of programs to deliver value to producers will serve our member-owners and cooperative well. We are especially glad that Brad has proven himself a leader in the Jersey breed as that is an important component of the region he will serve as well as demonstrating his commitment to serving local producers of all sizes and breeds.”

David Whitlock, current Regional Marketing Manager for the Southern Region, will retire on June 1, 2020 after 30 years working for Premier and its preceding cooperatives. Whitlock has served the cooperative in many different ways, and he charted the course in making reproductive analysis part of the everyday management and profit discussion with member customers. His efforts have enhanced the role of the Reproductive Specialist into a true partner and trusted advisor on farm.

Whitlock held the title of Regional Marketing Manager for the past four years of his career, and in that leadership role he worked closely with the Southern Region Area Sales Managers, Reproductive Service Specialists, and support staff to maximize sales and service. He attracted many new team members and helped them develop into their roles, strengthening the cooperative and the sense of teamwork in the Southern Region.

“Dave has been a champion for Premier, a mentor to many, and a thought leader in reproductive applications on farm that arguably was the basis for what we call SRS today,” said Carpenter. “Premier has such strong foundations in our organization that provide us the opportunities to let our branches grow and develop, and I personally want to thank Dave for his contributions and leadership to this foundation. Please join me in wishing Dave our collective appreciation for his service and the best of luck in his new endeavors.”

Kirk Sattazahn will assume the role of Vice President of Marketing and Development, effective May 16, 2020.Formerly the Director of Marketing for Premier, he begins this role after a few months serving the dairy industry in a different capacity. Sattazahn’s new position has been developed after more than a year of analyzing Premier systems and processes as a 23-state cooperative to determine the best way to effectively manage sales and marketing efforts.

Sattazahn will be responsible for achieving sales and service objectives for Premier Select Sires and increasing total sales and market share. He will be accountable for helping successfully translate strategy into achieving business objectives as a member of the senior leadership team. Areas of focus will include implementation and development of sales programs to include budgets, planning strategies, product mix, pricing, market research and analytics, marketing/communications, as well as suggested advertising, promotion and public relations programs. He will also assist the CEO as a senior executive to develop the mission, purpose, and priorities of the organization and collaborate on M&A targets and activity to enhance the member value proposition.

“I am very excited to have Kirk on the Premier team in this new capacity, and I look forward to working with him for the betterment of our members and employees,” said Carpenter. “With the tremendous opportunities Premier has ahead, we feel that this change will serve our cooperative well.”

Premier Select Sires Cooperative to Pass Nearly $1 Million in Added Benefits to Member-Customers During May, June, July

As producers face uncertainties and challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Premier Select Sires will offer a 7 percent credit on member-customer semen purchases through the months of May, June, and July 2020. Premier will also strategically retire equity to strengthen the cooperative and further benefit members.

“The Premier board of directors recently held a special vote to approve plans for the cooperative to implement the 7 percent rebate program combined with early retirement of equity that will accelerate the return to our farmer-owners during a time that may be difficult for many producers,” said Mark Carpenter, CEO of Premier Select Sires. “We want our customer-owners to know that despite nationwide uncertainties, one thing remains certain—Premier is committed to serving our producers as they continue providing for consumers. With local governance and control through our farmer-elected board of directors, we are able to respond quickly and appropriately to help our local cooperative members.”

The 7 percent credit program will provide Premier customers an opportunity to continue investing in the genetic improvement of their herds with the benefit of increased savings. As always, the Premier sales team will sell industry-leading genetics at the best prices available. However, when invoices are prepared at the end of the indicated months, a 7 percent credit on all semen purchases will be applied to reduce the total amount due. The only requirement is that accounts must be current on their balance to qualify.

Premier Select Sires continues to take precautionary measures to protect the health and safety of member-customers, employees, and the families of each. We are working to prevent the spread of the virus while maintaining the necessary services producers rely on to continue their essential work. VALENTINO Joins Half Million Club

In 2017, 7JE1038 VALENTINO surpassed 7JE590 ACTION as Select Sires’ No. 1 lifetime sales Jersey sire. Just 38 months later and at 12-years-of-age, VALENTINO adds another milestone to his record as Select Sires’ first Jersey sire to sell a half million units with 500,261 lifetime sales.

Historical significance

“VALENTINO has defined the Jersey Revolution,” says Herby Lutz. “He started out as a genomic rock star, at the top of the lists. Then his daughters calved in and the daughter data proved genomics were right and it helped Jersey breeders adopt the new technology.”

[fbvideo link=”https://www.facebook.com/SelectSires/videos/672928493538726/UzpfSTE4MDc3MTg1ODcwMDM2MToyNjU1OTEzOTIxMTg2MTMw/” width=”900″ height=”600″ onlyvideo=”1″]

Herby Lutz has traveled around the world as Select Sires’ Jersey development manager. He has seen VALENTINO daughters on five different continents and talked with countless producers about their performance. “VALENTINO daughters are known to be tall and strong with a lot of dairyness. They are cows with fantastic fore udders and outstanding height and width to their rear udders,” says Lutz. “He’s just a bull that is so balanced in what he creates, and the daughters are stamped. You can pick them out as you walk behind them—you know they are VALENTINO daughters.”

VALENTINO’s pedigree tells a unique story, with American Jersey Cattle Association Master Breeders David Allen and Donald and Elsa Sherman playing key roles. In 2006, Allen purchased VALENTINO’s dam, D&E Paramount Violet (E-90%) from the Shermans and in January 2010, five of her sons ranked among the top-10 Jersey Performance IndexTM (JPITM) young sires with VALENTINO holding the No. 1 spot.

As a popular young sire, VALENTINO quickly became a household name for Jersey breeders around the globe. He graduated into the proven lineup in 2012 as the No. 5 GJPI and No. 2 Type sire. Since then, he has consistently ranked high on industry lists and is known for siring beautiful, balanced and profitable daughters. Excitement for VALENTINO genetics has never stalled and his most recent sales rank him as the top-six sire for Jersey sales.

Influence and impact

VALENTINO’s progeny, both sons and daughters, have earned impressive accolades. Records from the American Jersey Cattle Association show that 93 daughters have scored

E-92% or higher with three outstanding daughters classified E-95%. VALENTINO daughters have made headlines in show arenas around the world as cows like Brookbora Valentino Fair Mavis (E-93%) and LC Valentino Clover (E-94%) have earned blue ribbons and purple banners. Jars of Clay Valentino Bridget-P (E-91%) was a highly influential VALENTINO brood cow and the dam of 7JE1294 BARNABAS.

Sons like 7JE1163 IRWIN, 7JE1219 OLIVER-P and 7JE1274 AXIS have been tremendously successful at creating the next generation of profitable Jersey cattle. To date, VALENTINO’s proof includes 19,898 daughters from 2,226 herds and he remains a top-50 sire for PTAT at +1.2 and +6.8 Jersey Udder IndexTM (JUITM).

It takes a team

Select Sires is thrilled to announce this milestone for VALENTINO and congratulate the Allen family on this well-deserved accomplishment. “I can’t believe how fortunate I was to acquire a cow like VALENTINO’s mother, the Violet cow,” says David Allen. “I am just tickled to death that we had the opportunity to breed VALENTINO and the experience has been really gratifying.”

In addition to VALENTINO’s breeders, Select Sires extends sincere gratitude to the many team members who have contributed to this accomplishment, including production staff that provide top-notch care each day to maintain VALENTINO’s health and wellbeing.

Dairy cattle genetics company donating bull semen to aid struggling farmers

The owner of Field of Dreams Genetics Corp. here is taking a bullish attitude when it comes to helping dairy farmers and the downturn they’re experiencing because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company, owned by Gary R. Tubolino, is providing bull semen at no cost to farmers who wish to get a cow bred. The three-month offer began early this month.

In the brawny business world of bull semen, it’s all about numbers, names and results. Specifically in the case of these donations, Mr. Tubolino is providing the semen from bulls 91H4629 Alabama, 91H4602 Apache, 6H4283 Antonio, 91H4408 Gusto, 6H0075 Lance, 91H4489 Leader and 36H00346 Mars.

“A lot of farmers are dumping their milk,” Mr. Tubolino said. “If we’re going to keep them in business, we’ve got to help them out. They’ve helped me out over the years.”

Mr. Tubolino plans to donate up to a total of 50,000 “straws,” or units, valued at $20 a unit. A straw contains a specified concentration and volume of semen for a dose. The straws are frozen in steel tanks filled with liquid nitrogen.

The retail value of the total donation is $250,000.

The amount provided to a farmer, Mr. Tubolino said, depends on the size of the dairy operation. For example, he said a farm with 100 cows will likely require around 300 units for the year. In that case, Mr. Tubolino would provide a “straw” donation for a third of the year.

Once bulls are known to produce high-quality progeny, they are housed with an artificial insemination company that collects semen.

“We ship our bulls out to Utah, where they draw the semen and ship it back to us,” Mr. Tubolino said.

Mr. Tubolino said his straws contain 50 million-to-60 million sperm count per straw. The industry average, he said, is much lower.

“We more or less make sure these cows are getting pregnant,” he said.

Mr. Tubolino said a farmer asked him, that among the seven bulls in the donation program, which one he would choose.

“If I was milking cows, I would pick the whole of them,” he said. “That’s how good they are.”

Mr. Tubolino, who owns Field of Dreams Genetics with his wife, Janet, is a former dairy farmer who found success in bovine reproduction. He left his family dairy farm nearly 50 years ago to seek to improve quality of dairy cattle.

Mr. Tubolino said many farmers who have found out about his offer simply can’t believe it.

“They don’t think it’s true,” he said. “I tell them it’s true, because I’ve got the semen here, why not donate it? Why let it sit there?”

Dairy farmers must pick up the straws in person at Field of Dreams on Grove Street, and they must bring their own tanks. Usually, company employees go to the farms. But not with the current pandemic.

“These farmers can’t let anybody in their place because it might affect their workers,” Mr. Tubolino said. “A lot of these farmers have 30 to 40 guys working for them.”

Jay Matteson, Jefferson County agricultural coordinator, called Mr. Tubolino’s donation program “very generous.”

“Semen can be expensive and depending on the genetic background of the bull, it can be very expensive,” Mr. Matteson said. “It was a great idea he had and very nice of him to do that. I was very impressed with it.”

Most dairy farms, Mr. Matteson said, use artificial insemination.

“It’s the safer way to go,” he said. “They can be a little bit more selective and a lot of farmers are using sexed semen, which gives them a higher percentage of females vs. males. With more farms doing artificial insemination, Gary’s donation allows that farm to ensure that they’re continuing milk production in the future.”

The only time cows produce milk is after giving birth to a calf.

“Cows give milk for several months after they give birth to their calf,” Mr. Matteson said. “But then they dry up. The cow is allowed a period of rest. After calving and milking, there’s a period of time where the farm will rest that cow. And then they’ll breed that cow back so that they can start that cycle over again.”

The calf of the cow, Mr. Matteson said, either becomes a replacement for milk production on the farm, or if it’s a male, it likely will go into beef production.

Mr. Matteson said that Mr. Tubolino is well known in the breeding industry, and he has seen him at the annual World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis.

“Gary knows how to look for the better animals,” Mr. Matteson said. “He’ll work to purchase shares of those bulls that have proven themselves to have the right genetic stock to produce the best dairy cows.”

But not even the best dairy cow can turn around the dire financial situation now faced by dairy farmers.

“Right now, the dairy industry is dumping anywhere between 65 and 100 million gallons of milk every week here in the U.S.,” Mr. Matteson said. “I’ve been working in agriculture for 30 years. I would argue that this is the worst situation that the dairy industry has ever been in.”

Most likely, Mr. Matteson said, there will be efforts to reduce milk production.

“One of the ways to do that is not having as many dairy cows on the farm,” he said.

But that doesn’t mean Mr. Tubolino’s donation program is counter to that strategy.

“Dairy farms will still need to breed their cows back in order to continue their milk production cycle,” Mr. Matteson said. “They just might cull out some of their lower producing cows and keep the better producing cows. Gary’s service is essential to that.”

When dairy farmers ship milk off the farm, its price is tallied at per 100 pounds of milk.

“The cost of production ranges between $18 and $10 per 100 pounds of milk shipped,” Mr. Matteson said. “That’s how much it costs to make what they ship. The projections we’re seeing right now is that they’ll get paid somewhere between $11 to $13 per 100 pounds of milk they ship. You can see it’s not a money-making venture right now.”

The current dairy crisis comes after five years of “horrible”prices for dairy, Mr. Matteson said.

“This is the perfect storm hitting the dairy industry,” he said.

But he added that “every little bit helps” and that Mr. Tubolino’s program is a way to assist farmers.

When Mr. Matteson heard about the Field of Dreams program, he paid a visit to Mr. Tubolino and made a short video that was posted April 4 on the Facebook pages of the company and the Jefferson County Agricultural Economic Development page. As of Thursday, it had nearly 6,000 views and more than 200 shares.

“That, for me on the agricultural side, is a viral video,” Mr. Matteson said. “I didn’t expect it to take off quite like that. I had people commenting on it who weren’t farmers. They just really love seeing this happen. It gave people that uplift.”

Mr. Tubolino said any dairy farmer interested in the program may call him at 315-405-1588. Pickup from 41 Grove St. is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. by appointment.

FDL Barcelona “Staggering” Debut

FDL Barcelona, bred by FDL Jerseys, Coaticook, Quebec, last week (7th April) emerged as the number two (#2) listed Canadian-bred sire and the number ten (# 10) proven listed GLPI sire in the recent Canadian sire evaluation-run.  FDL Barcelona offers Canadian GLPI figures of +1860; +823kgs milk, +51kgs fat (+0.10%) and +41kgs protein (+0.11%) and +7 on Conformation score and a Pro$ value of +2044.

The bull graduated with an astonishing 101 daughter widespread proof on his debut; considered twice and thrice the norm for a Jersey breed sire in the modern genomic era. The bull’s enormous popularity within Canada, resulted in Barcelona having listed as the #1 genomic listed sire by female progeny registrations for two consecutive years by breed society, Jersey Canada.

FDL Barcelona, born in 2015, previously listed as the #1 gLPI available sire on four occasions. The bull has over 1,000 female progeny listed on the Lactanet /Canadian Dairy Network website according to FDL’s Remi Guay. He said: “Canadian-breeders have continued to use Barcelona since the bull was made available in 2016. The ongoing widespread use of Barcelona has been a tremendous vote of confidence for Canadian pure-bred Jersey cattle-breeding.

“We are delighted Barcelona’s debut evaluation ranks the bull as the second highest Canadian-bred sire on the April 2020 domestic listing. The bull has 101 records in his debut evaluation resulting in 90% reliability. Barcelona transmits significant increases on type offering +7 on Conformation score; +8 Mammary system, +5 Feet and Legs and +6 on Rump, based upon 59 classified daughters in 41 herds. The bull averages 85% Good Plus and Better with an average score of 81.8 points.

“Since the evaluation-run cut-off date, Barcelona has added an additional 15 classified daughters but on-farm classification has since been suspended due to Coronavirus. Barcelona’s update information has 74 scored Canadian-bred daughters having an 85% Good Plus and Better average,” states Remi.

Remi Guay and Renee Hamel and their young family, farm at Coaticook, Quebec, and operate a 60-cow Jersey herd under the Groupe Fleur-de-Lys (FDL) prefix. A first-generation dairy farmer, Remi started milk production in October 2009, starting with a small herd of five FDL foundation heifers, and the couple have continued to invest in milk quota; land, machinery and animals.

The FDL syndicate began as a cattle-breeding partnership between Remi and Bruce Jobson in April 2007, with the purchase of a six-month-old heifer calf, Lencrest Iatola Fleur, the third dam of FDL Barcelona. Commenting on the recent success of the evaluation-run, UK-based Mr Jobson said: ““Everyone has been blown-away by the staggering number of progeny emerging in his debut evaluation. Its an immense achievement.

“Some proven Jersey bulls emerge with a limited proof of 25 or 30 daughter records but having over 100 records has resulted in 90% reliability. We can anticipate some ‘drag-back’ due to the sheer numbers in the evaluation albeit with over 1,000 daughters; the bull will have a continuous ‘rolling’ proof. We expect Barcelona to have between 300 – 500 records entering the evaluation in 2020.”

Mr Jobson has a background in Holstein breeding and had immense Canadian contacts having acted as a PR and Marketing consultant to Drew Sloan OBE, founder and Head of Semex UK. Bruce acted as International Press Co-ordinator at the Canadian Livestock Genetics Association Visioning Conference (CLGA) at Ottawa in November 2006, an event attended by press delegates from 25 countries.

He returned to Canada in February 2007 with the view to establish a Jersey breed genetics programme based in Quebec and recruited Marie-Claire Girod of Jersey Quebec as advisor. Ms Girod suggested Remi and Bruce become cattle-breeding partners and Groupe Fleur-de-Lys (FDL) began to take shape in April 2007 with the purchase of six-month old heifer calf, Lencrest Iatola Fleur.

FDL has now bred three sires that have all ranked in the Canadian top 15 domestic sire listing including FDL Bieber, FDL Maid in Canada and now, FDL Barcelona. Foundation cow, Lencrest Iatola Fleur VG also bred FDL Minister S Blessing Ex 92 4E, the former #1 listed Canadian Conformation cow. FDL also bred the #3 LPI cow of the Jersey breed, FDL Premier Belle VG87, the dam of Barcelona.

FDL Barcelona has been marketed in Canada and internationally by Ontario-based genetics company, Semex Alliance. In the UK, the bull has over 333 registered progeny. Barcelona’s first ten (10) UK daughters have scored 90% GP or Better and average 84 points.

Semex’s Monument Impression Passes Away

Semex is saddened to announce that global superstar 0200HO00560 Monument Impression has passed away.

Outcross sire, Impression arrived with a progeny proof in April 2013 as Semex’s #1 new release sire. Six years later, his demand has never waned with sales to every corner of the Earth including Canada, the US, Germany, France, and Japan.

As one of the flagship Immunity+® sires, Impression’s appeal knew no bounds! He was globally demanded because he sired healthy, long-lasting, profitable cows and ranked as the top sire of calves registered in Canada in 2016!

“His daughters were the kind that could virtually go unnoticed in herds,” says Brad Sayles, Semex Chief Operating Officer. “That’s why producers continued to use him again and again. Impressions do not get sick and just do their jobs day in and day out, just like we expect Immunity+ sires to do. Dairymen everywhere tell us they are their favorites because they’re functional and easy to work with. Based on his 82% Good Plus and better rating on over 12,000 cows scored in Canada, we can definitely say they were appealing and will remain in herds for many, many lactations.”

A 99% reliability sire, Impression’s maternal line is dominated by the most popular sires of modern times including Durham, Lee and Bellwood, with his five closest dams being VG or EX. Impressions everywhere have been the beneficiary of his pedigree, as he’s maintained solid type figures throughout his career, posting a +12 Conf and +2.02 PTAT in December 2019.

A limited amount of Impression semen remains. For more information on Impression, Semex or of its suite of solutions visit www.semex.com
