Cogent Limited, the market leader in sexed semen technology, UK proven dairy and beef genetics and genomic young sires, has today announced the restructuring of its business to fully integrate the Cogent Breeding, Dairy Daughters and World Wide Sires UK businesses.
The changes, which will bring the three companies together as one business unit – Cogent Limited, are designed to improve the organisation’s trading efficiency and to improve the level of service offered to its domestic customers.
In January 2011 the Cogent Group announced the acquisition of the business and marketing rights of World Wide Sires UK and Dairy Daughters. Since then, the three companies have worked closely together, but have retained separate identities. Under the company’s new configuration, the three brands will operate through a truly customer focused structure with a single sales force, one point of contact per customer, one invoice and delivery system, and a single website and bull brochure representing all three product portfolios. Added value services such as the Worldwide Mating Service (WMS), the Visions young bull testing programme and the PinPoint dairy breeding management service will continue to be available through the newly structured organisation.
Commenting on the news, Mark Evington, Managing Director of the Cogent Group, said: “This move will further strengthen the Group’s reputation as a market leader within the growing AI and sexed-semen industry and will help us to deliver world-class breeding solutions for 21st century agricultural businesses.
“Cogent Breeding, World Wide Sires UK and Dairy Daughters all have strong reputations within the UK and internationally for their ranges of market-leading bulls. In response to a large and growing number of requests from our customers, we are amalgamating all three of our UK sales forces under a single identity to create a unified sales force, with an on-farm, telesales and e-commerce presence. By bringing the three brands closer together, our customers will be benefit from improved operating efficiencies, and will be allocated a single sales specialist who will work closely with them to offer expert advice and products from a wider portfolio of high-quality beef and dairy bulls.”
Michael Phillips, UK Sales Manager for the Cogent Group added: “The changes announced today mark a significant point in the evolution of the Cogent Group. Bringing the three brands more closely together will create a platform for future growth, and will allow us to offer a holistic approach to herd fertility and sire selection.
“Successful breeding is about much more than providing the best products; it is a partnership based on trust and understanding between the farm and breeding business. With this in mind, Cogent aims to be the UK’s partner of choice whatever the make-up or size of herd.
“It is an exciting time for all involved, and one which will be of benefit to our customers, who will now be able to access Cogent’s full range of breeding services and an enhanced product range from a single customer focused source.”
The new company structure takes effect from 2nd September 2013.

A number of sires also added daughter information during this genetic evaluation, with stability resulting from genomic proof to daughter proof. Of note this proof round is that the high profile, former FutureStars, AltaMETEOR and AltaCALIBER, each maintained their production proofs with 200 additional production daughters. As the Advantage Consultants previously predicted, based on their evaluations of progeny-tested daughters in progressive herd environments, the type proofs of AltaMETEOR and AltaCALIBER also held steady with the addition of their first proof daughters for type.
AltaMETEOR daughters at Danensview Farm, Tavistock, Ontario
Also adding daughters was the highly-reliable favorite, AltaIOTA. With nearly 1,000 new daughters, his production, type and health proofs held firm, while he gained almost 40 TPI points. AltaMAGNETO was another who added 300 daughters and stayed steady across the board.
Information added this proof round also includes two new haplotypes that negatively affect fertility. Alta has taken a proactive approach to identify carriers of these haplotypes by denoting carriers on individual bull pages.
AltaDOM graduates as Alta’s top new daughter-proven release this August with nearly 100 production daughters. His production numbers of +1765 PTAM and 80 CFP paired with his health numbers of 7.1 PL, 1.1 DPR, 6.7 SCE and 2.69 SCS certainly give this former FutureStar the label of HEALTH-PRODUCTION specialist. Advantage Consultants are impressed by the well-balanced, dairy frames, and extremely wide rear udders on the daughters of this former FutureStar. They are also slightly taller, and have more strength than his linear suggests, and are straighter through the hock.
Another FutureStar graduate, AltaNETWORTH has earned the Advantage Consultant stamp of approval due to the daughters’ fancy udders, strong fore udder attachments and high, wide rear udders. Their medium-size, dairy frames are complemented by a sound set of feet and legs. AltaNETWORTH also has a very balanced genetic profile with solid components at 86 CFP, +0.04%P, and +0.10%F and high health traits at +6.9 PL, +0.8 DPR, 2.66 SCS and a low, 5.9 sire calving ease.
Early daughters of AltaCELEB showcase his abilities as a type-production specialist at +1319 PTAM, 91 CFP, and over +2.00 for both type and udders. These long-bodied cows have youthful, high-clearance udders with wide rear udder attachments. They are medium-stature, wide in the chest and have plenty of substance of bone.
Green Meadows Celeb Tracy, Green Meadows Farm, Michigan
AltaTREASURE is the final addition to the daughter-proven new releases, adding 77 daughters to his production proof. At nearly 1000 PTAM, 87 CFP, 1.5 DPR, 5.3 PL and 7% calving ease, he will make the daughters that produce well, get pregnant quickly and last in the herd. The first, early daughters of this former FutureStar are the no-holes type of cows, who are wide in the rear udder, sound on their feet and legs and balanced in their frames.
From FutureStar favorites to daughter-proven successes, the variety of new-release bulls and those who have added daughters this round prove Alta is driving genetic progress in the right direction. This daughter-proven confirmation of what genomics predicted solidifies the knowledge that Alta’s G-Star and FutureStar bulls can also be used in any breeding program with confidence.

What else does a husband of 34 years, a father of four grown children, and a grandfather of three beautiful girls have to accomplish? Just one more thing…hitting the million-unit mark!
Ken Rowley accomplished that goal this spring, just under 26 years from the time he purchased his first unit of semen from All-West Select Sires. The ordered totaled $815.00 and included some large quantities of 7H1005 (Leprechaun Sioux), 7H1295 (Applenotch Instep) and 7H2897 (Volkert Comanche). Hired by Tom & Lloyd Vierra in those early days, Ken quickly expanded his business and the million unit march began.
Like many on the All-West Select Sires team, Ken grew up on a dairy and was very involved with his dad until the age of 20. “Our dairy was in Visalia and by the time I was 20 years old, I thought I knew all there was to know about work and choosing a career. I told my dad as much, even saying that he was crazy for working so hard at this dairy farming thing!” Ken joked. He learned pretty quickly that the grass isn’t always greener, and had to work three jobs just to make ends meet.
Ken said a local dairyman called him on several occasions wanting him to come out and talk about a potential job at the dairy, and after some time had passed, Ken did just that. “He offered me a job working Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm, running a 2000-cow dairy. That didn’t sound like a bad deal to me, so I accepted the job and worked there for eight years. It really got me back into the dairy farming world and I realized it was actually a pretty good way to make a living!” Working five days a week quickly morphed into six and seven days a week, especially when Ken was put in charge of the fresh pen and hospital group.
Ken left there and went to work at Veemans Dairy (ie the parents of well-known Mandy Veeman Nunes of Scientific Holsteins in Wisconsin). There he dialed up his knowledge and interest in pedigrees and focused more on breeding. Local Select Sires representative Dutch Aldrich had been working for over 30 years in the A.I. business and took Ken under his wing as he noticed his developing interest. “Dutch helped me learn what I was supposed to do when it came to refining my breeding skills. I’d even go to the slaughter house and get reproductive tracts to practice on during those days.”
The Veemans eventually moved and Ken was faced with another fork in the road. He got married to his wife Kathy in 1979 and they bought their own dairy just a few years later in 1982. They milked 140 cows until the first round of buy-outs came through and they sold the herd.
From that point on, Ken knew his interest in breeding combined with his practical experience of working on several types of dairies would be a good fit for a starting his own technician/sales service. VanBeek Dairy was his very first customer, and they are still customers to this day! “They told me I could work at breeding cows there and build my route, which is exactly what I did. It took me three years to add a second dairy to my technician route, but from there it took off! I was gone from the house every day from 4am to 7pm.” He spent more time learning bull pedigrees from people such as Dick Ball and Greg Silva.
Ken steadily increased his business, breeding about 100 cows every day, and the first 500,000 units of semen he purchased ended up being straws he bred with himself. Today, his 25 tanks serve his own route and five other technicians. He generally carries 15-18 bulls in the tanks at any given time, and stays true to the sires he strongly believes in. “I don’t change up my bull inventories every time proofs change,” he stated. “I do keep a mix of proven sires and genomic young sires because I need to keep the types of bulls I carry in balance, as well as keep my blend price reasonable. I try to stick to bulls with good udders, feet & legs and test (high components). Lately I’ve been using quite a bit of 7HO9754 DAYTON, 7H9222 SHOT and 7HO9900 ABRAM, all of which are plus on components, and plus on all their major type composites.”
Ken noted that in the 26 years he’s been at this, he’s always only carried Select Sires. “I’ve never bought from anyone else. From the time Lloyd called (and he was with Superior Sires at the time) through today’s All West team, Select Sires has always been good to me!”
So in 26 years, what are some of Ken’s best lessons learned? He’s quick to note a few things. His family is very important to him and he enjoys watching his children and grandchildren grow and succeed. “It’s really a blessing.” He also said that the A.I. business has been good and you can definitely learn something new every day if you keep listening. Finally, he points out the lesson of “Taking your time. Get good at heat detection. Practice. Keep visiting herds. Get confident in your abilities and the products you carry. I had two herd that were both bull-bred and they switched to A.I. with me. I’ve already seen an improvement in herd and it was a pretty fast turn-around. They trusted me with their business after they’ve seen me work through the years.”
Husband, father, grandfather, technician, business manager and sales representative. Ken Rowley’s “million unit” status comes from a lifelong pursuit of hard work, responsibility and putting other’s interests ahead of his own. Twenty-six years and counting for the southern California sales representative who truly believes that “Your Success is HIS passion!”
So you have a high testing bull that all the A.I. studs want…Great! Now the headaches begin. Sure the day you got the test results back it felt like you had won the lottery. But it’s not that simple. There is a lot more work to be done. You see, picking which A.I. center to lease your bull to is a lot more complicated than most think. It’s not simply figuring out who will pay you the most money. Anyone who has read a sire lease agreement knows that you need a masters in law and mathematics in order to calculate just how much money you will actually get paid. With that in mind the Bullvine decided to highlight some of the key factors that many breeders may not be paying enough attention to when they decide who to lease their bull to.
Market Share & Distribution
Bigger is not always better (Read more: Does Size Matter). Having said that, when it comes to which stud to lease your bull to, size can’t hurt. Think about it. The big 5 studs have more than 10 times the distribution of even the medium studs. That would mean that you need to get 10x the % royalty that you would get from a smaller stud. For example if Stud A has a 25% market share and offers a 10% royalty, a smaller stud that has say 5% market share would have to offer 50% royalty in order to deliver the same net revenue.
Market Segment
Probably just as important as market share is market segment. This means that you would not lease a high type sire to a stud whose core clientele is commercial producers. They just would not have the correct distribution network to move the maximum amount of semen for you. For example, studs like Alta Genetics, Genex and ABS have a strong commercial producer clientele, so a NM$ sire would be better to lease to them than a high type sire would be. Conversely, studs like Semex and Select Sires have strong type lineups. Hence they have developed great distribution channels that work well for show and pedigree breeders.
Taking this one step farther, it’s also important to see how strong that studs lineup is that would compete with your bull. For example Select Sires has a strong all around line-up (Read more: Stud Wars – The Battle for AI Supremacy), so your bull may be one of many top sires to market in that segment. Whereas studs like ABS and Accelerated have a strong market segment to the commercial producers, but currently do not possess as strong a lineup of NM$ sires in relation to their market share. Leasing your high NM$ sire to one of these studs would probably result in greater marketing and distribution efforts for your sire, as it would be more unique in their lineup, and still be in that stud’s wheel house.
Marketing/Lease Agreement
Seth Godin probably said it best “Never sign a contract or make an investment that you don’t understand at least as well as the person on the other side of the transaction.”
In reviewing many of the contracts offered by most studs these days, the wording is so vague about what you will actually get paid, and who owns the rights to what, that it can be hard for most non lawyers to even understand what you are signing. You may know the stud’s personnel or the sire analyst that you are dealing with quite well. But what happens if they get fired? What happens if new ownership or technologies come out? Things like first release semen, cloning, etc are all key parts of any agreement. These are just a few of the details that you need to understand clearly.
We keep a law firm on retainer for all contracts we sign for the work that we do. This has helped since starting the Bullvine for those interesting times when some threaten to sue us. When I showed our lawyers the contracts that the major A.I. studs have breeders sign, they first laughed, and then said that breeders should never sign them. Everything should be clearly put in writing. Until you are crystal clear on how the agreement will work (in writing), you should never sign anything.
There are key questions you need to be clear on: what is their definition of domestic semen; what is the value of early release semen; and what is the difference between the retail and wholesale selling price? Each of these terms can have a huge impact on the revenue you will receive. For example many of the larger studs sell semen to their member co-operatives or sister organizations very cheaply and that is the rate you get your lease from. Even though these studs then go and sell that semen for 5 and 6 times as much. Since you are paid on what the originating stud sells it for and not their member co-operative or sister organization sells it for, you could be losing out on thousands of dollars.
One thing I am surprised about is that more breeders aren’t demanding and more studs aren’t delivering a full accounting of exactly how many units were sold and for what price. In a sense they are asking you to trust them in blind faith that the numbers they tell you are correct. Now I am not saying the studs are trying to cheat you, but for everyone involved an accurate accounting for total number of units sold and blend price is necessary to build trust in these partnership arrangements.
It`s also important to make sure that the agreement is a Win-Win for both sides. You may think you have gotten the best of the stud for the arrangement you get, but if it is not a win for them they just won’t move semen, and that is an extremely key element in any lease. You see if it costs them too much to sell your bull and they have other bulls that are close and cost way less, naturally they are going to move those other sires.
Also realize that in today`s genomic market, 6 months after a bull is released there is a good chance that the bull will no longer be in the top of the list, so an agreement that worked well for a list topper, may no longer work well for a sire who is in that no man’s land between early release and proven sire status. Make sure you have arrangements and agreements in place with the stud that keeps semen moving and is still a win-win for both sides. One arrangement I have seen work well is a % of net royalty for the first year and then a set price per dose after that. That way you capitalize on the high value, early release semen and then agree to a very manageable set price for the stud after that. This way, they can continue to market and promote the sire.
The Bullvine Bottom Line
The “aw shucks I am glad to be selling a bull to A.I.” days are over. This is a business. Big business. And with big business comes contracts. In order to maximize your revenue, you really need to become adept at contract negotiations. Only then can you know who is really selling your bull and exactly how much money you are making.

Semex regrets to announce the passing of former Semex Canada General Manager, Dr. Morris Freeman.
Dr. Morris ‘Moe’ Freeman passed away peacefully on July 15 in Guelph, Ontario with his beloved wife of 57 years, Ruth, and loving family at his side. Born 80 years ago in Markdale, Ontario he was the loving son of Thomas & Annie (Graham) Freeman, cherished brother of June Falls (Ormond), Keith (Joan) and Doug (Eleanor); proud father of David (Laura), Michael (Odette) and Paul (Karen); and joyful and doting Grampa to Erin, Monica, Thomas, Danielle and John.
Moe was one-of-a-kind: a talented athlete, dedicated scholar and professor, successful businessman but, above all, a caring, kind and wonderful gentleman, who never forgot the lessons of humility, hard work, and compassion learned in a happy boyhood on the family dairy farm.
He was the first of his family to attend university when he started first year at the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC), now the University of Guelph. He often joked that his parents, although supportive, were convinced homesickness would bring him home in a couple of weeks. Happily, they were wrong and Moe went on to distinguish himself athletically and academically as a proud graduate of OAC 1955, including an athletic letter and playing on the collegiate hockey team, the last two years as captain. Moe also met the love of his life, Ruth Cooke, on a blind date in first year. They married in 1956 and shared an incredible, loving relationship that stood the test of time.
Moe’s undergraduate courses and early work experience convinced him that his future lay in the study of genetics. And so, in September 1966, Moe and Ruth and their family of three boys moved to Ithaca, New York so that he could earn his PhD at Cornell University. Moe returned to his alma mater in 1969 as an Assistant Professor in Animal Science. He continued to be a consummate advocate, fundraiser and benefactor of the University of Guelph for the rest of his life.
In 1974, Dr. Freeman left the university to join what was then known as Semex Canada, a small organization charged with exporting Canadian livestock genetics and know-how. Moe loved the job and thrived. He was appointed General Manager in 1976, and under Moe’s leadership over the next 17 years, Semex grew from sales of less than a million dollars to more than 46 million dollars. In 1991, Semex’s export success was recognized by a Canada Export Award.
Moe’s retirement years were happy and busy, filled with a little travel, a lot of golf, cottaging on the Big Rideau Lake and various carpentry projects. He and Ruth took great joy in their five grandchildren. Moe was a superb Grampa, delighting in building huge Lego structures, playing endless board and card games and swimming with his grandchildren.
The last 10 years of Moe’s life were spent in a courageous and inspiring fight against the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease. The disease ultimately claimed his life, but never his dignity, his kindness or his spirit. Fellow residents of Riverside Glen in Guelph knew Moe as the tall gentleman who walked a lot, always said ‘hello’ and jumped in to help those around him.
A celebration of Morris (Moe) Freeman’s life will be organized in September. In Lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Wellington Alzheimer’s Association. Expressions of sympathy can be emailed to Moe@SkyePlace.com

Semex and EastGen are extremely proud to announce that Lowell D. Lindsay will be inducted into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame.
“It was with great and unreserved pleasure that Semex and EastGen, submitted the nomination of Lowell Lindsay for induction into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame. Lowell achieved a great deal in his career, however, Canadian agriculture and specifically the dairy cattle industry has been the true benefactor,” says Paul Larmer, Semex Chief Executive Officer. “It is impossible to measure the economic impact that Lowell has had, however his career spanned 53 years, and when one looks at the genetic progress made in Canada over that time period it is immense. Now available to US dairy breeders is InSire, Vekis CHEVROLET-ET 097HO40927. With a GTPI of +2484, Chevrolet is adding excitement to the already established CRV lineup. As the #1 bull for GTPI from a daughter proven sire, Chevrolet has been drawing attention from breeders all across the globe.
Chevrolet is a Freddie out of Larcrest Chenoa-ETS (Planet x Ramos) VG-87 who has put up impressive production numbers just like her dam, Larcrest Crimson-ET EX-91 GMD. Larcrest Crimson-ET (Ramos x Shottle), has left her mark on the Holstein breed as the #8 GTPI cow of the breed. Her and her 3 daughters by Planet rank as 4 of the top 35 cows of the breed.
Chevrolet expresses more than just an impressive GTPI. With +2345 lbs M, 86 lbs F, and 76 lbs P, he is a component expert. Not only that, he will add longevity and profitability to every daughter he produces with 6.3 PL and 915 NM$.
“Chevrolet is quickly becoming one of the most popular GTPI sires in the world,” states Brett Haines, managing director of CRV USA. “Having him available to US dairy breeders is very exciting and we look forward to what the future has in store for him.”

A long time ago in a galaxy far away……Who are we kidding the A.I. stud wars are now and the battleground is the USA, the most lucrative genetics market in the world. For years I have heard the debate from all sides about which stud has the best sire line-up. The problem is most of it has been anecdotal and no one has really backed it up with numbers. So, in true Bullvine fashion, we thought we would bring numbers to this galactic battle.
To settle this confrontation, we decided to let genomics and genetic evaluations determine exactly which stud rules the empire. Specifically we looked at top 50 proven and genomic sires for TPITM, NM$ and PTAT to determine who are the studs and who are the duds. The following is what we found. (Please note we deemed a sire to be available if the had an NAAB Code)
TPI

It’s interesting to see how the percentages seem to be similar to market share, prior to the genomic era. The big five being ABS, Select Sires, Alta Genetics, Accelerated Genetics and Genex.

The top gPA TPI sires tell a very different story than that of the proven sires. Studs like ABS Global and Alta Genetics do not have as large a portion of the top bulls whereas Semex and Select Sires have invested heavily in obtaining top gPA TPI sires.

When it comes to strength of line-up from a TPI perspective, it’s interesting to see how Semex and some of the smaller studs have made a big push on getting the top genomic sires, in order to have that stronger line-up in the future. On the other hand, some of the established studs are resting on their proven laurels. (Please note for top list we used the top 50 genomic and top 50 proven sires.)
NM$

It is interesting how the studs that are more milk producer focused as opposed to breeder focused rise up on this list. Specifically Genex, Alta Genetics and ABS have their best showings here.

Even the studs who have not gone heavily into genomics, are at least sampling some high genomic sires for NM$. When it comes to selling volumes of semen, nothing compares to a high NM$ sire. Yes the top TPI sires will sell well, but the high NM$ will move in volume as they attractive the commercial market.

The greatest spread of the top sires amongst the studs occurs in NM$. This is not surprising since this is such a lucrative market for so many studs. They all are trying to get the top sires.
PTAT

When it comes to the top type bulls, it seems like everyone wants a shot at them. Type sires are a premium market delivering high margins to the units. This is certainly one area where type oriented countries and their respective studs excel (Example, Semenzoo and Semex).

Similar to the proven bull list, this is an area where everyone wants to play. It is interesting to see that many of the type niche studs don’t have more on these lists. That could be due to the fact that they are focusing on show type and not necessarily on sires who have high genomic tests for PTAT.

A subject of great debate on our Facebook page has been who has the better type sire lineup, Select Sires or Semex. If you go by the numbers, there is no question that Select Sires has the advantage. Looking deeper into this, we decided to take the top 5 proven and the top 5 genomic sires from each stud and see whose were better. Select Sires averaged 4.14 PTAT and Semex averaged 3.72. So Select not only has an advantage in numbers but also in quality.
The Bullvine Bottom Line

It’s always interesting when you get into the debate about which studs have the best sire lineup to see the perceptions people have. Most look at it based on what their breeding goals are and state their opinion relative to that. Nevertheless there are many that are guilty of looking at things through rose colored glasses for the studs they prefer and hence discrediting other studs because of it. The one thing you cannot deny is that, when you look across the board, the US sire line up at Select Sires has the largest market share and are a player in each major market. Studs like Semex (type) and ABS, Alta Genetics, and Genex (NM$ and TPI) do well in niche segments.
The amount of bragging and arguing that goes on among breeders about what country has the best genetics in the world is insane. Because many have no actual facts to back up their opinion, the Bullvine decided to take a closer look and see just who does have the best genetics in the world. We took a look at the top 50 proven and top 50 genomic sires (where possible) in each of the major north American indexes (TPI, NM%, LPI, PTAT and Conf) to see just what countries have the top bulls on each. We used north American indexes since all other indexes did not publicly provide MACE lists for use to do an accurate evaluation. The following is what we found.
TPITM
When it comes to TPI, it’s not surprising that the US dominates both the proven and genomic sire lists. Given that TPI is a US based index, it’s only natural that they would have such a large proportion of the list. What is interesting about these results is that Canada does have 14% of the top genomic sires. Maybe a sign that Canadians are starting to put more attention into TPI and are adjusting their breeding programs so that they can achieve high ranking TPI animals.
NM$
Since young sire information between countries is not readily available, its not surprising the we have mostly US sires on the genomic lists. What is interesting about these results is that the Nordic countries have 22% of the top proven sires for NM$. This is a direct result of their heavy focus on health and fertility and thus leading the way in genetic progress in these areas (Read more: What the experts will tell you about who is winning the genetic improvement race).
PTAT
When it comes to type it’s not surprising that Canada makes its strongest showing in this area. Years of intense breeding for this trait have led to Canada having a larger market share in this area. What is also interesting is the diversity of countries that make the top proven sire list.
LPI
Almost shockingly there are no Canadian bred proven sires in the top 50 LPI sires in the world. Given that LPI is Canada’s national index you would think there would be at least a few. While the genomic lists do have 22% Canadian bred sires, it shows that in the recent past Canadian’s have been lagging behind other countries.
Conformation
One area that has always been a great strength is the Canada’s ability to breed great type. While they certainly have their largest market share in this area. It is interesting to note that the Canada does have more of the top proven and genomic conformation sires in the world.
The Bullvine Bottom Line
While there is no question that the US has the largest population of dairy breeders in the world, and hence they should have the largest market share, what is surprising is how they have so much of the world’s top genetics. Well beyond just the size of their population base, the US is the world leader in producing top Holstein sires.
