A fire in the milking parlors at Roundtree Dairy in Chandler Township north of Elkton forced owners to evacuate their cows to other dairy farms late Monday afternoon, sparking area farmers to rally to their aid.

A constant flow of trucks towing cattle trailers could be seen arriving and leaving the farm on Farver Road as fire trucks and other emergency vehicles from the Oliver Township and Winsor Township fire departments left the scene around 6:30 p.m.

The evacuation was necessary because dairy cows must be milked regularly or they will develop an illness known as mastitis.

There were no injuries, and no cows were hurt in the fire. The cause of the fire has not been determined, but an electrical issue may have sparked the blaze.

The Oliver Township Fire Department was assisted by Winsor Township as well as the departments from Caseville and Bad Axe, who provided tanker trucks and an air trailer.
