The top price this year was tabled for lot 50. Bluechip Sid Madison-Imp-ET-CAN sold for $22,000. She was offered by Bluechip and Ferme Blondin, Canada. Madison finished second in her age class at International Dairy Week this year and the January 2013-born Pine-Tree Sid daughter from Browndale Dundee Magic EX90. She was bought by Anthony Peatling, of Toolamba.

Consistency and a US buyer underscored the $6940 average at the Bluechip Invitational sale on June 5.

Hosted by Dean and Dianna Malcolm (together with their co-vendors) near Shepparton, in Victoria, the Bluechip sales historically set a cracking pace for registered Holstein on-farm sales for the year.

Bluechip has sold three of the four highest prices achieved at auction in Australasia in the last three years – $101,000 (2012) for Bluechip Apple Spice; $72,000 (2013) for Bluechip Goldwyn Frosty and $50,000 (2011) for Bluechip Jasper Rae.

This year, the focus was on depth and consistency. And buyers snapped on to it – choosing prudently from a catalogue that included 68 head and grossed $423,350 for the live female lots.

The top price this year was tabled for lot 50. Bluechip Sid Madison-Imp-ET-CAN sold for $22,000. She was offered by Bluechip and Ferme Blondin, Canada. Madison finished second in her age class at International Dairy Week this year and the January 2013-born Pine-Tree Sid daughter from Browndale Dundee Magic EX90 signalled the start of some brisk selling in the second half of the sale. She was bought by Anthony Peatling, of Toolamba. Anthony also bought Lot 4 Bluechip Goldwyn Tonio-Imp-ET-NZ for $17,000.

The second highest price was Lot 3, Lightning Ridge-R CMD McCutcheon Armani-Imp-ET-USA. The February 2014-born heifer was offered by Declan Patten (now based at Butlerview in the US) and Victorian breeder from Leongatha, Callum Moscript. She made $18,000, selling to Hillco Pty Ltd, from Cudgewa, Victoria.

“This year we knew we didn’t have the extreme priced lot that we have had in recent years, but we felt we had a very balanced offering,” Dean Malcolm said. “There was a lot of good show heifers from a lot of great cow families and that’s what we set out to do.

“We were pleased to welcome back a lot of repeat buyers, along with some new interest. We sold to New Zealand buyers once again, in addition to the US and throughout Australia.

The US buyer was the high profile owner of St. Jacobs Animal Breeding Corp, Tim Abbott. Tim resides in Franklin, Vermont but visits Australia regularly within his business which concentrates on the development of elite dairy cattle genetics through the sale of live cattle, embryos and semen.

His cattle purchases (within industry-leading partnerships) around the world include household names Robrook Goldwyn Cameron EX94 (the All-American and All-Canadian two and three-year-old in 2011 and 2012); Dubeau Dundee Hezbollah (the 2009 WDE Intermediate Champion) and Butz-Butler Gold Barbara EX92 (the 2013 WDE Intermediate Champion). He is known for astute selections of high profile animals which are impacting the breed both through sons and daughters.

And Tim bypassed the international pedigrees, instead choosing an Australian family on the rise that traces back to 1906. He bought Bluechip Atwood Whynot for $17,000 in partnership with Long Lanes Holsteins, from Queensland.

“The global breeding business is critical to our success and Australia is a key market for us,” Tim Abbott said. “We believe this is a great family and hope to be able to get some of her genetics back in the US soon.

“We liked her because she is carrying a female and she is also a great individual in her own right. However, we have also long believed great cattle have to be at great homes and our relationship with Dean and Di (Bluechip Genetics) lets us have a great home for her. So the answer to the question about why we bought is: ‘Whynot!?’.”

There were 89 registered buyers and several took advantage of Bluechip’s offer to pay for the entry fees for Bluechip animals that in the Victorian Holstein Winter Fair at Bendigo on July 2-4.

One of the volume buyers was the breeders/owners of the 2013 International Dairy Week Grand Champion, Chris and Mary Gleeson, from Crossley, Victoria.

They bought seven head – Bluechip Acme Princess ($4500), Bluechip Goldwyn S Noni ($8500), Eastview Aftershock Bonnie ($8000), Bluechip Acme Queen ($6300), Bluechip EV Sticky Apple ($7500), Bluechip Golden Shamrock ($3000) and Bluechip Damion Three ($3000).

“We believe this will go down as a sale where a lot of the animals were bought for very reasonable money and they will hopefully go on and do a lot of good things for their new owners and bring them a lot of pleasure and satisfaction,” Dean Malcolm concluded.
