More than 30 professional Select Reproductive Solutions (SRS) specialists attended this year’s SRS Conference, hosted by COBA/Select Sires Inc. in Columbus, Ohio.
More than 35 professional Select Reproductive Solutions™ (SRS™) specialists from Select Sires’ member organizations, Select Sires Canada and Reproductores SR, Select Sires’ distributor in Argentina, recently gathered for the annual SRS Conference held June 3-6 in Columbus, Ohio. The conference is held on an annual basis for SRS specialists to share ideas and learn more about the latest in reproductive technology. Hosted by COBA/Select Sires Inc., the four-day conference incorporated both classroom and on-farm training.
“This year’s SRS Conference was as successful as ever,” stated Dr. Ray Nebel, vice president of technical service programs. “Working together as a team in the RePRO Analysis™ challenge activity has always been the highlight of the conference. Besides the educational aspects, the conference is a great networking event that allows the SRS specialists from across the federation to see what others with similar responsibilities are doing.”
The SRS conference featured sessions on Select Detect™ troubleshooting, herd management software updates, managing heifer inventories, economics of reproduction, heat abatement strategies, feed management tips, personnel management, timed A.I. protocols, on-farm communication and training and Heatime®. Training sessions were led by SRS specialists, Select Sires staff members and experts in the field of reproduction and nutrition.
Outside of the classroom, SRS specialists participated in the annual RePRO Analysis™ challenge. Attendees were split into small teams and asked to evaluate a herd’s reproductive performance and present their results to conference attendees. This real-world experience allows SRS specialists to collaborate with their peers from around the country. Select Sires would like to thank Meerland Dairy, South Solon, Ohio and Miedema Dairy, Circleville, Ohio for taking part in the conference.
Select Sires recognizes that a one-size-fits-all approach to reproductive management does not work in today’s dairy industry. That’s why dairy producers trust Select Sires’ highly trained SRS specialists to help design a customized reproductive program that’s right for their needs. SRS specialists offer a Portfolio of Reproductive Solutions™ that consist of reproductive troubleshooting using Select RePRO Analysis, dairy records and management analysis, professional turnkey technician service, estrus-synchronization programs and assistance, SelectCheck™ heat detection training, English and Spanish training resources and professional A.I. training, heat detection aids and nutritional supplements.

At the age of 16 and after a long career, it is curtains for the legendary CRV bull Kian. With 1.4 million straws sold, Kian is the undisputed Red-and-White world record holder. He leaves a clear legacy in the bloodlines of both his daughters and his sons.
Kian (Andries x Sunny Boy) was born on 11 June 1997. Internationally, he evolved into the most popular Red-and-White bull of all time. Due to his unique qualities, he was used on a massive scale on both Red-and-White and Black-and-White cows. In 2008, Kian became the first Red-and-White bull in the world to produce more than one million doses of semen. The counter now stands at well over 1.4 million doses.
Highly sought-after qualities
After his breakthrough as a breeding bull in 2002, Kian ranked among the top-5 of the most frequently used bulls for years, even topping this league for four years in succession. He owed his popularity partly to the fact that his daughters are strong cows with amazing legs and feet with high protein and life time production.
In addition to the Netherlands and Flanders, many Kian daughters are to be found in countries including Germany, South Africa, Brazil, the United States, the Czech Republic and New Zealand.
Sire of sons
In his long career, Kian has also been successful in the male line. His sons Delta Fidelity, Apina Curtis and Van de Peul Kylian are widely praised for their strong legs and feet inheritance. Also grandsons such as Delta Sherlock (Black-and-White), Delta Maicon and Delta Direct are currently continuing the successes of the Kian era at a high level.
Thanks to his immense popularity at home and abroad and the successful bull progeny he leaves, Kian can rightly be called a legendary bull.

Select Sires professional Select Mating Service genetic consultants and staff attended the 2013 SMS Consultant Conference, hosted by All West/Select Sires in California.
PLAIN CITY, Ohio, June 19, 2013—Almost 150 attendees including Select Mating Service™ (SMS™) genetic consultants from Select Sires’ member organizations, international guests and dairy producers met at the 38th annual SMS Consultant Conference, hosted by All West/Select Sires in Visalia, Calif., May 6-9, 2013.
Genetic consultants participated in a day of continuing education to ensure that they remain a valuable resource for their customers. The group discussed the latest developments in the Program for Genetic Advancement™ (PGA™), the many strengths of Select Sires’ current sire lineup and exciting genomic young sires that are waiting in the wings. They learned about enhancements to the SMS program, innovative technologies and recent trends.
The most widely accepted mating program in the world, SMS continues to have persistent growth that is unmatched in the industry. SMS genetic consultants took the program to record-breaking heights in customer service in 2012. Last year the number of pedigree matings totaled 1,124,100, a record-setting number marking the first time pedigree matings exceeded 1 million animals. For more than 35 years, SMS has been building better cows throughout the world which is evident in the nearly 2 million new animals added to the SMS program in 2012. SMS consultants continue to help dairy producers control genetic recessives, haplotypes, inbreeding levels and create custom selection indexes based on customer goals.
During the first three days, consultants viewed progeny of Select Sires’ current lineup and potential graduates in California. Select Sires wishes to thank the following herds for their hospitality: Ahlem Farms Partnership, Hilmar, Calif.; Machado Dairy, Turlock, Calif.; Arlinda Dairy, Turlock, Calif.; Lorita Holsteins, Modesto, Calif.; Genasci Dairy, Modesto, Calif.; Double Oak Dairy, Tulare, Calif.; H&T Dairy, Tipton, Calif.; Decade Dairy, Tulare, Calif.; Westra Dairy, Tulare, Calif.; Curtimade Dairy, Tulare, Calif.; Dias & Dias Dairy, Kingsburg, Calif.; Paulo-Bro Dairy, Hanford, Calif. and De Groot Dairy, Fresno, Calif.
“This year’s conference provided consultants and international guests an opportunity to view Select Sires’ genetics in action,” stated Lon Peters, vice president of dairy sire product services for Select Sires. “The chance to walk behind hundreds of cows was perfect for identifying the type pattern of different sires. All of these herds served as testimonials of what SMS and Select Sires can do for our customer-owners.”

Jerry Emerich was honored as the 2013 Genetic Consultant of the Year at the 2013 SMS Genetic Consultant Conference held in early May.
PLAIN CITY, Ohio, June 19, 2013—Jerry Emerich of Select Sire Power was honored as the Select Mating Service™ (SMS™) genetic consultant of the year in front of an audience of his peers at Select Sires’ national SMS Genetic Consultant Conference held in Visalia, Calif., on May 6-9, 2013.
This national award is presented annually to genetic consultants who exemplify the qualities that make SMS known throughout the world as the premier mating program in the industry to assist dairy producers in developing genetic business plans. The recipient must have several years of superior service, a history of high-quality evaluations and the ability to build and maintain successful relationships with dairy producers.
“It is refreshing to watch Jerry as he consults with dairy producers and explains the value of making every mating the best it can be,” says Norman Vincel, general manager, Select Sire Power. “His knowledge of our bulls, our programs and our resources are useful in educating our employees and customers. His customers appreciate his thoroughness as they always have up-to-date mating information and the latest sire information.”
Emerich was born and raised on a dairy farm in western Ohio and attended The Ohio State University where he received a bachelor’s degree in dairy science. Jerry began working for Select Sires Inc. as a sales representative in Minnesota after graduating. He then worked for nine years in international marketing at Select Sires Inc., making corrective matings for Select Sires customers in Latin America and Canada. In 1993, Emerich moved to the northeastern part of the country to develop the Program for Genetic Advancement™ (PGA™) and SMS markets. He continued to provide SMS services to Latin American customers for several years.
Currently, he serves as a SMS genetic consultant for Select Sire Power, working with five sales representatives and numerous technicians in New England and eastern New York. He is also the beef specialist in the Northeast, drawing upon his personal experience and knowledge as an owner of purebred Angus.
Emerich has served as treasurer of the New England Jersey Breeders’ Association for the past 13 years and recently served as the finance chair for the 2012 American Jersey Cattle Association Annual Meeting in North Conway, N.H. He is a past president of the Vermont Angus Association and was recently elected to the New York Beef Producers’ Association board of directors. He and his wife, Wanda along with their daughter, Katarina, raise Angus and Jersey cattle in Mooers, N.Y.

Through repeated polled and parentage testing it was found that 7HO11898 BBM CP ALTITUDE-RED-ET does not transmit the polled gene as previous tests had revealed. A DNA identification sample switch early in his life caused this error. This status change was part of extensive re-testing performed on all polled sires marketed by Select Sires to confirm their polled status. As a Showcase Selections™ and FeedPRO® sire from the KHW Regiment Apple-Red-ET (EX-95-2E-EX-MS-DOM) family, ALTITUDE-RED will remain in the Super Sampler™ lineup.
The polled trait in dairy cattle can only be genetic tested with haplotype marker testing, which does allow for rare errors to be made. This is quite different than actual gene testing that is available for genetic recessives like CVM or BLAD. In light of recent polled test results Select Sires Inc. has implemented detailed quality control measures, including multiple genetic test results utilizing multiple labs.

Allan Cossentine of Hanford has a reputation that might be considered the gold standard for performance as sales representatives go. A loyal employee of All West/Select Sires for 33 years, Cossentine has surpassed the 3-million dose mark in semen sales and is now one of only three individuals in America to have ever reached this milestone.
Jim Wells, general manager for All West/Select Sires says, “Allan Cossentine has always gone to great lengths to provide his customers with exceptional service to go along with excellent guidance on genetic selection. He has a unique willingness to serve, a servant attitude that puts his customer first in everything he does.”
Bill Genasci, regional manager, said “for more than 30 years, Allan has been the face of Select Sires to his many customers in the South Valley. Reaching the milestone of 3 million units is a testament to how well he has been received in his area. Forming lasting relationships with both his customers and the technicians he works with has taken him to a level that few will ever reach.”
He started selling semen in 1978 with Eastern AI in Fresno, Kern, and Kings counties. But his journey with All West/Select Sires began in February 1980, working with Tom Olson and Lloyd Vierra, covering a territory from Bakersfield to Turlock, and along the coast from Salinas to Santa Maria.
Cossentine has served dairy producers in Fresno, Turlock, Bakersfield and the Central Coast area and was sales manager for the company for a few years on the Coast and in Kern County.
“They treat their employees like family. It’s a company culture, which has been maintained by the present leadership of Bill Genasci and Jim Wells. Their doors were always open,” Cossentine said. “There are not too many places I could have worked for so many years and been treated so well.”
The company literally runs in his blood. He is passionate about what he does in the industry and is so connected with All West that he has the company logo tattooed on his arm. He and his wife, Suzi, raised some of the first Pinzgauer cattle in California in the mid-1970s on their small 10-acre ranch at the edge of Stockton. The cattle are a rare breed with origins in the Pinzgau region of Austria.
Today, while Pinzgauer cattle are on the endangered list, Cossentine has thrived in his more than 3 decades with All West/Select Sires. “I believe what success I’ve had is the result of being blessed to work for this company for the last 33 years, and working with producers in the concentrated dairy area of Central California,” Cossentine said.
Many good memories flashed through his mind as he looked back and talked about his career. He said he considered his customers to be friends, and always put them first, making himself available, whenever or wherever they needed him.
“I’ve always looked at myself as more of a caretaker than a salesman. Years ago I heard someone describe a good salesman as someone who could sell somebody something they don’t want or need. I never wanted to be that guy,” Cossentine confided.
“So to me, this job was all about working in a wonderful industry with great people that I really have a personal interest in helping get their cows bred and pregnant with the best genetics in the world.” Cossentine said he picks the bulls in their Select
Mating Service for his customers and then he works extensively with Greg Silva, who handles most of the mating on the herds Cossentine serves.
“One thing that I believe has made me different from some of the other sales people is when I first started in this business I was talking to a dairyman and I made it clear I was interested in a long-term relationship. I hoped to be selling him semen when my children were in college.” And for the most part, that’s the way life has been for Cossentine. “As it turned out, I’m still selling semen and I now have grandchildren who are close to starting college.”
“I could single out some of my long-time customers that helped me reach this milestone, but I really need to say thanks to ALL my customers over the years. I’ve enjoyed my friendships with my clients and couldn’t have accomplished what I’ve done without every one of them,” Cossentine declared. “Large dairies or small ones, I’ve tried to treat each customer with the same integrity and respect.
“I would be remiss if I didn’t thank Lloyd Vierra and Tom Olson for giving me a job 33 years ago. They put together a group of co-workers who not only became my dearest friends, but like family. With Lloyd and Tom at the head of that family, it was impossible to fail.”
Cossentine’s work ethic also carried over into his private life. So, whether it was youth sports with his kids, activities at First Baptist Church, charity work, or the dairy industry, Cossentine has always been heavily involved in his community –– with an extra strong commitment to be a positive influence in the lives of young people.
Over the years, he has coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball, and soccer.
“While I loved baseball, I really didn’t know much about soccer, but we had a great time and I guess I offered a lot of encouragement as much as actual coaching,” he said.
He and Suzi have four children and six grandchildren. They celebrated 37 years of marriage in February 2013. “I would like to also thank my wonderful wife and partner for all the support and all those nights she was alone caring for our children while I was on the road.”
29HO10124 End-Road PVF BOLIVER has passed away following a successful life of 14 years.
Since his release in 2003, BOLIVER daughters have been known for tremendous udders for trouble-free cows and come from a well-known cow family that improves form and function. This great combination of family genetics and tremendous udders made BOLIVER daughters easy to like and find in the cow pen.
“BOLIVER has been a favorite of everyone at ABS, including our genetics staff, sales representatives around the globe and the barn crew that worked with him every day. According to our production staff, BOLIVER ranks as the second highest lifetime semen producer in ABS history, behind only DIE-HARD,” said Ryan Starkenburg, sire selection manager at ABS Global. “BOLIVER continues to have a big impact on the Holstein breed through his daughters, sons and grandsons. I am sure that wherever dairy farmers appreciate medium-sized, fancy cattle that last with outstanding udders and profitable production, they will appreciate BOLIVER descendents.”
Headquartered in DeForest, Wisconsin, ABS Global is the world‐leading provider of bovine genetics, reproduction services, technologies and uddercare products. Marketing in more than 80 countries around the globe, ABS has been at the forefront of animal genetics and technology since its founding in 1941. ABS Global is a division of Genus plc.
All West/Select Sires is pleased to announce the promotion of J.R. Fisher to sales representative in Tillamook/Willamette Valley, Oregon and SW Washington. He will also be working with SMS evaluator Lisa Barkley and technician Dave Porter. J.R. previously worked for the company as a technician specialist in the Sunnyside/Yakima Valley area of eastern Washington.
A native of Sulphur Springs, Texas, J.R. brings a vast amount of experience to the team. Growing up on a 150-cow registered dairy, he was not only involved in showing cattle, but earned a spot on the Texas State 4-H judging team that competed at World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin. A graduate of Texas A&M, he spent time in Australia with the Young Cooperators program at DFA, worked for Cargill Animal Nutrition, and also completed the Large Dairy Herdsman program at Utah State University.
“J.R.’s extensive work with cattle all over the world has built a solid foundation of experience for his skills at All West,” said Regional Sales Manager Karl Krangnes. “He will be a valuable resource for our customers in Tillamook who not only want to invest in the Select Sires program, but also want a representative who is willing to work side by side with them and improve profitability.”
J.R. terms himself as a modern-day explorer, and he and his wife, Vanessa, will make their home in Tillamook. They enjoy traveling, and raising Catahoula Leopards (a type of dog from Louisiana). His passion for studying genetics and breeding runs deep and his new position is just a natural extension of his personality. “I’m really looking forward to taking on this new role with All West. It’s such a progressive area that I’m excited to see what’s working for people there and how I can help improve their bottom line. My job is more than just selling semen. I want to work with people who love this industry as much as I do.”

In an industry where a few major players dominate the world market, it can be very intimidating for new participants about to enter the marketplace. I can still remember working with David Eastman and Albert Cormier when they launched GenerVations. At that time, there was no such thing as genomics, and even though we had the #1 LPI sire, Champion, we still took a lot of heat about the reliability of his proof. However, I learned then, as I know now, fortune favors the bold.
Fast forward 12 years and things have significantly changed. Genomics has leveled the playing field. Any company can market their genetics with the same level of confidence as those of the large A.I. companies. For years everyone has talked about how, in 2013, the A.I. industry would change drastically when new players enter the sire sampling market, as a result of breeders being able to sample their own bulls. However, the reality is changes have already started. Since the introduction of Genomics back in 2008, there have been four significant players enter the A.I. business: AI Total, DairyBullsOnline, Jetstream Genetics and Trans-America Genetics (TAG). They have all made a significant impact on the A.I. industry in a short period of time. Each has gone about their strategy in a different way but each has had their own level of success.
The AI Total Story
Since partnering with AI Service Zuid-West Friesland (A company that provides insemination services for Dutch dairy farmers) in 2010 Jan De Vries and the AI Total team have been very aggressive. Many years in the embryo business (Diamond Genetics and Eurogenes) have provided them with a base of marketing operations that has served them well (Read more: EUROGENES: You Love It. They List It!). Looking to service the producer market, AI Total looks to produce productive, functional, healthy and sustainable cows. For De Vries this means looking at sires that excel in traits such as calving ease and DPR, while not being too large in size for the environments in which they are housed.
At the moment AI Total owns about 15 to 20 bulls that are housed in Europe, and carry sires from GenerVations, Jetstream Genetics and others. A highlight of their current lineup is Hood MOM Emmet, the Man-O-Man son from Tramilda-N Baxter Emily VG-2yr, the dam of the popular North American sire Epic. His 2nd dam is Wabash-Way Evett-ET (VG-86, 2y) who is a Shottle daughter, out of Crockett-Acres Elita-ET (VG-87 DOM 2*) and followed by nine VG or EX dams. Emmett sires cows that are not too big, transmit favorable components and have strong fitness traits. These are all heavily sought after by producers around the world.
In an industry that requires bold moves to be successful, De Vries and his team are not afraid to make them. By working in many different aspects of the dairy genetics marketplace, Diamond Genetics/Eurogenes and AI Total are able to stay ahead and be trendsetters instead of followers.
The DairyBullsOnline Story
Starting out in the R&W market but getting sold on polled, Bryan Quanbury and Roy MacGregor have been extremely aggressive in developing DairyBullsOnline (Read more: They’re Sold Polled). They are promoting polled genetics as the solution that saves labor, reduces stress and improves consumer image. “We know the breed will not be polled in 10 years, but we believe in 10 years bulls that transmit the recessive horn trait will be very hard to market. Today there are about a dozen polled bulls over 2000 GTPI. Next year that will double. We expect that trend to continue for some time.” Bryan Quanbury and Roy MacGregor.
By leveraging technology both on the web through its marketing and social media platforms as well as by using technology for shipping semen internationally DairyBullsOnline is able to operate at much higher efficiency. This enables them to pass benefits back to the producers and breeders that they source their genetics from (Read more: A Wake-Up Call to All-A.I. Companies).
Despite what they lack in market share, they are able to attract unique genetics through offering seed stock breeders a much higher royalty percentage. A great example of this is the sale of Kulp-Dale Golden PP-Red semen for $10,000 a dose, where the proceeds went straight to the breeder (Read more: $10,000 a Dose Polled Semen).
MacGregor and Quanbury have not been afraid to blaze their own trial. Not worrying what others would say about them, they have had a clear vision and have executed their plan very effectively. They knew polled before polled was cool. Being trend setters has it’s rewards, as anyone looking to get into polled in a significant way will certainly have to take a serious look at DairyBullsOnline and the trend setting moves they are making.
The Jetstream Genetics Story
With the arrival of Genomics, Jeff Butler and the ownership team at Jetstream, saw the opportunity for small AI-organizations that focus on top genomic genetics. Having already heavily invested in some of the top genomics females in the world for his Butlerview operations, Butler already had a source of some of the most elite genetics in the world (Read more: Exciting Times For Butlerview).
Established in April 2012, theirs is the shortest story of these four bold, world-changing companies. Nevertheless it has certainly been a very eventful one fourteen months. Roger Turner, Sales and Genetic Manager for Jetstream Genetics, reports that it has exceeded expectations (Read more: Turner Moving Genetics Forward at Jetstream).
At the moment, Jetstream has about 15 bulls that are housed in Wisconsin. Turner, a 15-year veteran in the AI industry, expects that number to increase by about 15 bulls per year. A highlight of the Jetstream lineup are the Cash brothers, Farnear Cashcoin and Cashmoney, sired by the now popular proven sire Observer from MS Chassity Goldwyn Cash VG87 2yr, who is out of the 2012 Golden Dam Finalist Regancrest S Chassity EX-92 (Read more: Regancrest S Chassity – 2012 Golden Dam Finalist). Other popular sires include Colt 45 RC who is the top available type polled sire in the world.
Similar to AI Total and Diamond Genetics, Jetstream and Butlerview partner to be a complete genetics company. In the Butlerview program, there are some of the most well-known cattle in the world, including the extremely popular show cows REW Happy Go Lucky and Cookview Goldwyn Monique. Jeff Butler is definitely not afraid to make bold moves. He has put his money where his mouth is and is blazing new trails in the dairy cattle genetics marketplace. A clear example of this is how Jetstream is leading the way in online semen ordering (Read more: New sires available on easy to use Jetstream online order system).
The TAG Story
Of the four new AI companies profiled here, Trans-America Genetics (TAG) is certainly the oldest of the group, with their first sires already receiving official daughter proofs. The road has been an interesting one for Patrice Simard and the TAG team. Since starting TAG with Alan Bryson almost 5 years ago, there have been ups and downs, but the hard work is starting to provide dividends for all involved in the journey
Indeed the highlight has to be the success of Ronalee Toystory Domain. Domain is the Toystory son that was among the top Genomic sires in the world for a long time and has now successfully transitioned into one of the top daughter proven sires. This achievement is very important for a young AI company as breeders watch to see how their genetic programs turn out. Success like this has positively helped TAG grow in the international marketplace (Read more: TAG Continues to Grow on the International Scene).
Talking about genetic programs, TAG is another company that has the complete genetics marketplace covered. However, unlike the others, TAG does it all under one brand and has been well-rewarded from the great publicity this has received. Many of their Genomic Giants Sales rank at the top of the yearly sales lists (Read more: The 2013 Genomic Giant Sale was a Giant Success!).
Aggressive and energetic does not begin to describe the team at TAG. They have had to weather the trials and tribulations of starting a business and investing your heart and soul into it, but the rewards are starting to pay off as the TAG brand is catching the eye of breeders around the world.
The Bullvine Bottom Line
Starting an AI company is not an easy task. It takes years before you receive your first daughter proven sire, and distribution can prove to be a nightmare. Add to that the fact that you`re under a microscope as everyone is judged each move you make. In order to get ahead, you have to be bold and aggressive. Anything else will result in failure. Fortunately, for these four AI companies, their progressive moves are turning heads and putting good fortune boldly in their path.

East Central/Select Sires is a professional, artificial breeding cooperatives serving dairy and livestock producers in southern Wisconsin. As a member-owner of Select Sires located near Plain City, Ohio, East Central/Select Sires helps make up the largest Artificial Insemination (A.I.) cooperative in the world. They provide highly fertile semen as well as excellence in service and programs to achieve its basic objective of supplying livestock breeders with America’s best genetics at a reasonable price.
Genus ABS launch four new genomic sires specially selected for UK breeders for their genetic improvement credentials.
Welcome Armitage Pesky (Armitage X Jose X Oman) is the number one Armitage son in the world. Stephanie Whittaker, Genus ABS Business Development Manager, comments, “Armitage was a sire who ranked very highly for PLI but never qualified for export in to the EU although was used extensively as a sire of sons over in North America. Pesky is a very complete sire who boasts a staggering £250 for PLI and 2.5 UK Type Merit alongside huge fertility at +0.6. High quality milk is a key phrase when thinking about Pesky, he is the only bull in the world which has over 450kg’s milk, 0.15% fat and 0.11% protein”.
Offering something truly unique, Matcrest Sham Charlie (Shamrock X Mac X Outside) hails right from the heart of the Larcrest Cosmopolitan Cow family. “Charlie is a really complete genomic sire which offers all round improvement. Charlie will breed phenomenal type merit with an overall score of 3.44. Charlie is an udder specialist with a composite score of 3.33. Alongside great type comes great index from Charlie, he has a PLI score of +190 which is driven by sky high fertility and component rich milk.”
The UK’s number four Type bull and number one Shamrock Son is Marland (Shamrock X Mac X Shottle). Marland is the only genomic sire in the UK with Scores of +3.8 TM, +3.57 Mammary and +2.76 Legs and Feet. “Marland is one of the most complete genomic sires on the market for all round type, mammary and leg and foot improvements. Of the top five UK type bulls, Marland is also the highest on PLI and Fertility index. If it is sky high type with great health and fitness traits you want, why look any further than Marland”, states Stephanie.
The fourth sire added to the line-up is O’Hare P (O-Style X Signif P X Goldwyn). Stephanie comments, “O’Hare P is a very exciting new genomic sire being the world’s number one Polled sire available. He is a great profit improver his PLI is £174 which makes him a true leader in the Polled world. O’Hare will also breed good solid type with legs, feet and udder improvement. We are really excited to see the influence that O’Hare P will have in the polled world. He has a really unique sire stack for a polled sire which features no Lawn Boy. With more focus being placed on breeding polled animals why not try some of the world’s leading polled sire?”
When it comes to calving time do you play the “will she, won’t she” game, with your cows keeping you guessing as to when they’ll actually deliver? Wouldn’t it be far better, instead, if you knew for certain which cows were going to calve, and when?
Well now you can – thanks to the introduction of new calving detection technology from Semex.
Called Calving24, and part of the company’s ai24 range of products and services, the system monitors the temperature of the mothers-to-be, and uses the changes to predict the approach of calving. As calving becomes imminent the device sends an immediate alert – all this is done via text messages relayed to the farmer via a radio base unit.
The device consists of a temperature sensor, which is placed in the vagina of the cow about a week before the expected date ofcalving. This communicates the cow’s temperature to the radio base, which can be up to 200 metres away. From here on in it will send temperature reports twice a day to three different mobile phone numbers. Some 48 hours before calving the animal’s temperature will peak and then start to fall again and this change is relayed to those same numbers. At the start of calving, when the water bag expels the sensor, the temperature drops suddenly and the farmer is alerted immediately.
“The device is, like the heat detection technology ai24 Heatime, another innovative genetic management tool to help busy farmers take the uncertainty out of a key event in their animals’ life,” says Willie Tait, Semex’ genetics manager.
“It has proven to be an extremely useful management tool by acting as an early warning system for imminent calvings and means there’s less need to get up in the middle of the night to check cows that might be calving, which is a real bonus for the farmer or herdsmen. And, of course, the technology is also good for both mother and calf because it alerts the farmer to the calving, and results in fewer complications and deaths.”
The kit consists of up to 30 thermometers, an applicator and the radio base station. The price will be £3510 +VAT for a kit with eight thermometers, which is enough to equip around 200 cows in an all-year round calving pattern, as each thermometer should be able to be used for at least two cows each month. Interest-free finance is available, through Semex’ established and popular CashSaver account, over a 12-month period.
All West/Select Sires is pleased to announce the relocation of A.I. technician Matt Braun to the Skagit County, Washington area. Matt will be taking over technician responsibilities and continuing to provide breed-leading service to dairy producers in that area. Matt’s previous role as relief technician was spent equally between Tillamook, Oregon and Skagit County.
A native of Red Bluff, California, Matt has already accumulated a tremendous amount of A.I. experience in his life. Being raised on his parents’ dairy in California, Matt had hands-on experience breeding cows with his dad, and later was officially trained by another A.I. company. Since graduation he has worked in Texas breeding cows for over a year, and then worked as a relief technician in the Tillamook, Oregon area since then.
“I really like working for Select Sires because in my role as a technician, I get to promote the entire program that Select offers. It’s more than just breeding cows, it’s about keeping cows healthy, pregnant and profitable. As a company, they are really concerned about the whole scope of the dairy,” said Matt.
Brett Mackay, an All West/Select Sires Dairy Program Specialist, commented that Matt’s abilities would be a tremendous plus for dairies in the area. “Matt has all the skills and the right attitude to be a great breeder. As his experience grows so do his numbers for heat detection and conception. His sole focus is to help dairies be successful.”
In his spare time, Matt likes anything that involves a board – snowboarding, surfing and wakeboarding. For more information, or to contact Matt for technician service, please call 530.526.6191.
There is no question dairy breeders as a whole are a very passionate group. For the most part, it’s not a “line of work” you get into for the money. Between the equity burden and the long hours, it also doesn’t appear to be a “sexy” choice in the opinion of outsiders looking into the industry. But the one thing that all those who are in the industry know is that breeders are also extremely loyal. And the one area where most breeders demonstrate this insane loyalty is to the A.I. companies they purchase their semen from. They pretty much bleed the colors of the A.I. company they support.
Such brand loyalty is something companies like Apple and Coke would die to have. While these two massive global brands spend billions in marketing to build brand loyalty, A.I. companies have done it in a very different way. They have done it through generation after generation of brain washing. That’s correct brain washing.
Is there any difference in the major A.I. companies?
Recently my staff was working on some brand research for GE and I gave them the exercise to look at the Artificial Insemination market and look at each of the major A.I. companies and tell me how each company was different. You know what they found? Nothing! For the most part they are all within 5% of each other for product offering. While some do offer a few more services, they all, for the most part, offer the same service.
This really got me to thinking, and remembering my days of running the roads selling semen. It actually made sense. When I went into herds that were well established and had been operating for generations, they pretty much bled the color of their local A.I. cooperative. However, when I went into herds that were new to the industry or herds where the operators came from other countries, I found them much more open to what I had to say.
While many of the companies are trying to position themselves differently in the market like Wal-Mart, Apple and Amazon in reality there really isn’t any difference. (Read more: A Wake-Up Call to All A.I. Companies) Even in our article, Semex – The Rise and Fall of a Semen Empire, we highlight how Semex grew rapidly and developed an extremely loyal following around the world by being different, by breeding “the Canadian Kind”. However, as they got bigger they started to lose their focus on what made them different and now from an outsider looking in it would appear to be no different from all the rest.
Thinking about this I wonder how much breeders are limiting their genetic advancement due to loyalty to a certain A.I. company? Yes there is not a great difference when you average out the top sires from each company, but why do you seek to be average? Wouldn’t it be best to just use the best each company has to offer and forget the rest?
I think part of the problem is that there seems to be very little difference between the top sires. Something I was shocked to see is that Canadian Dairy Network actually accentuates the issue. Instead of promoting how the LPI formula was better at spreading out the top sires and differentiating them, they actually adjusted the formula to make them all closer?
Now I have had it said to me that this was done at the request of the large A.I. companies because they wanted to sell more proven sire semen and needed the genomic test sires to look less attractive. There is some logic behind this, because young sires do produce less semen and there always seems to be a limited supply (Read more: $10,000 a dose Polled Semen and $750 Dollar Semen! Are you crazy?). But the breeder in me says, “What’s more important marketing semen or genetic advancement?”
The Bullvine Bottom Line
Sure the A.I. companies will give you nice hats, maybe even a few coats and shirts, but is that enough to trade your future for? As we have more and more options of companies to purchase semen from, and more and more ways to purchase the semen, I ask you three important questions. ”How much of your semen purchase is dictated by tradition or brand loyalty?” Moreover, “Is your decision based on what is genetically best for your herd?” And finally “Who bleeds for your bottom line?”
Roger Turner is global sales and genetic manager for Jetstream Genetics, a new Madison-based AI company focused on elite genetics through genomics.
The availability of genomic testing in dairy cattle has had a major impact on the AI industry in a short time. Reliable, accurate genomic information on bulls is shortening the generation interval, changing marketing strategies, AI companies and ideas about breeding substantially.
Before genomic testing, dairy producers typically used about 15 percent young sires in their mating program, says Roger Turner, global sales and genetic manager for Jetstream Genetics. Now those farms are using greater than 50 percent “unproven” sires – sires with no milking daughters and often the bull dam isn’t milking yet either. “When you can increase the client base that much in a short period of time by delivering the results they were hoping for, then that percentage is only going to increase,” Turner says.
With genomic testing there is no more waiting years for daughters of young sires to freshen and information to be gathered, which often changed a bull’s proof dramatically from what his pedigree predicted to what his daughters actually materialized to be. The accuracy and immediacy of genomic testing has allowed for a handful of new start-up AI companies to quickly get off the ground without the typical investment in brick and mortar facilities.
Jetstream Genetics, based in Madison and headed by Turner, is one of these small new genomic-driven AI companies. The business is owned by a board of six investors located in the Chicago area. The ownership team members have a wide variety of agricultural and non-agricultural backgrounds and business experience.
With a focus on elite genetics and the motto “moving genetics forward,” in its first year of business Jetstream is already selling semen in over 30 countries and is taking a fresh approach to domestic AI sales through an online semen ordering system in the U.S. market. “We don’t think there’s anyone that has it set up to the integrated level that we have it,” Turner says of the online order system.
Semen inventory is continually updated as bulls are collected, so the buyer knows when they place the order that semen is available. Orders go directly to the warehouse at Alta Genetics in Watertown, where the bulls are housed, and semen arrives on the farm within three days via UPS. “It’s working very well. We’ve had no complications. The system is seamless and its use is steadily growing,” Turner says.
Although online semen ordering is a new approach, the traditional approach – sales distributors – carries about 90 percent of Jetstream’s business. “People still like to do business face-to-face. Distributors will probably always play an important role in our business, especially internationally,” he says.
Also playing an important role in Jetstream’s business is maintaining an elite genetic offering and integrating traits that have risen in popularity. “With genomics, it certainly has given us a lot more opportunity to get high-level genetics and add in some interesting niche traits that we weren’t able to focus on before.” Turner says genomic testing has allowed AI companies to identify and integrate sought after traits, like polled, into their genetic offering at a higher genetic level. Before genomics, typically breeders weren’t willing to give on the genetics they had in order to gain a trait like polled or Red. Genetic testing is reliably identifying superior genetics that include those niche traits.
With no bull facilities or physical headquarters of its own, Jetstream houses its bulls at Alta Genetics’ Watertown facilities. According to Turner, Alta is a recognized leader in fertility, semen quality and bull housing, making it the right partner for Jetstream to contract with on housing and collection services.
Jetstream aims to offer 15 to 20 bulls each year. There are about 10 bulls on their current roster, including the top available type/foot and leg polled sire with Colt 45 RC and leading Observer sons, Cashcoin and Cashmoney.
While Madison is Jetstream’s chosen home base with its central location, proximity to the bulls and dairy industry gathering place during World Dairy Expo each fall, Turner actually hails from Canada. He and his wife, Brenda, moved to the Madison area last fall. Brenda works for competing AI company, Semex, and is a UW-Madison alumna, originally from northwest Wisconsin.
Turner grew up on a dairy in Ontario and spent time honing his fitting, showmanship and judging skills as a youth. He worked 17 years as a dairy cattle fitter, travelling across Canada, the U.S. and around the world working for many well-known dairy farms and at cattle sales. “I think it’s interesting that the dairy cow can take you all across the world. It’s pretty unique, really.” Turner is a well-respected showman on the halter at national and international dairy shows, as well as an accomplished dairy cattle judge.
Going to work for Alta Genetics in the early ‘90s, Turner assisted with live cattle selection, export and bull procurement. He eventually became an international sales manager, with extensive travel to Europe, Australia, Japan and other countries. “There’s never been any place that I didn’t feel safe and hospitality within the dairy industry worldwide. There are great people everywhere, great cows and great farms.”
Maintaining those good connections around the world, Turner has continued to rack up frequent flyer miles in Jetstream’s short, but fast-growing existence. “We’re really pleased with where the first year has gone with the development of systems and infrastructure. We think year two will enhance relationships and move into markets we’re not in currently, with a focus on keeping our sire portfolio fresh, strong and elite.”

Over the past two years, St. Jacobs ABC has awarded six daughters and 20 embryos from EX-96 Tri-Day Ashlyn as a promotion to customers who have purchased semen. Several of these heifers have had great success for their new owners.
Blue Spruce Farm in Bridport, Vt. won a 29HO11111 BOLTON calf born from Ashlyn through a promotion at World Dairy Expo. She recently produced eight embryos by sexed 94HO14105 AFTERSHOCK on her flush.
“The Audet family at Blue Spruce is milking a lot of BOLTON daughters right now, so they’re familiar with the bull. They were thrilled to win a calf through the giveaway and look forward to bringing another high-type family into the herd,” said Skip Maynard, Independent Representative for ABS Global, Inc.
MacGregor Farm in Nova Scotia won a 94HO13666 DESTRY*RC calf born from Ashlyn. She recently produced 10 embryos by AFTERSCHOCK on her flush.
The MacGregor family is pleased to be adding the genetics of a great cow like Ashlyn to their herd, according to Jody Smallman, ABS Global Independent Representative.
Due to the success stories of these giveaways, St. Jacobs ABC will plan to do more giveaways in the future to give genetics back to the customers that are buying their product, according to St. Jacobs owners Tim and Sharyn Abbott. “These couple heifers have been very successful and we look forward to doing more promotional events and hearing more success stories like these,” said Tim Abbott of St. Jacob’s ABC.

A selection of key Holstein and colored breed bulls, which are out of production and therefore in limited supply, are being offered to World Wide Sires customers on a first-come, first-served basis, with stocks predicted to sell out rapidly.
World Wide Sires UK has collated the bulls into a ‘Limited Collection’, which offers closing stocks from a number of the UK’s favourite bulls from the past few years at competitive prices.
The collection includes popular Holstein bulls such as Atlantic, Sanchez and Scooby-Duu, which are well known in the UK for producing high yielding daughters with fantastic production and conformation traits. But these bulls are no longer in active production, and as such stocks of their semen are in dwindling supply.
As well as UK-proven Holstein bulls, the Limited Collection also includes a range of genomic bulls, as well as a selection of sought after bulls from the Ayrshire, Jersey and Guernsey breeds.
“The Limited Collection contains some highly sought after bulls which are now available at exceptionally competitive prices, but whose stocks are in short supply,” explains Nicky Ford, business support manager for World Wide Sires UK.
“A number of the bulls in the collection are available as sexed or conventional semen. Customers wanting to secure the last few straws of these popular bulls will need to act quickly as we expect supplies to sell out rapidly.”
Centre d’insémination artificielle du Québec (CIAQ) is celebrating its 65th anniversary of service to dairy and beef producers.
After a modest start in 1948, CIAQ pursued its own path over the years to become the largest enterprise of its kind in Canada with 300 employees and approximately 700 sires. In 1998, CIAQ became the property of three Quebec producer groups: the Fédération des producteurs de lait du Quebec (FPLQ), the Conseil québécois des races laitières inc. (CQRL) and the Conseil provincial des cercles d’amélioration du bétail inc. (CP CAB).
It is therefore appropriate to celebrate this anniversary by highlighting the cattle breeders of Quebec who have supported the enterprise in its growth, in the improvement of its products and in the innovative of its services to be able to continually go farther in the genetic development of cattle herds and ensuring the profitability and sustainability for all dairy and beef producers in Quebec. Promotions and prizes for cattle breeders and young farmers will take place throughout the year as a great way to underline the event. CIAQ publications will provide all the details in order that everybody can participate.
Our know-how, the commitment of our employees and the loyalty of our clients represent just one of the pillars of CIAQ’s success, a rendez-vous with success that has been 65 years in the making.
The 2013 year promises to be an excellent one for CIAQ and its clients. Since our first day 65 years ago, we have been motivated by the passion to serve our clients and to play a leading role in all projects which we have taken on. This is the reason why we will celebrate this anniversary year with the theme “As Passionate As Ever!”, a fitting slogan to inspire us to continue to pursue benefits for our producer clientele in the same fashion as in the past.
