Brrr! Get out your sweaters and shovels, especially for those west of the Mississippi River. From Accuweather to the Weather Channel and from The Old Farmer’s Almanac to NOAA, Old Man Winter is gearing up for a rough season.
“This winter is shaping up to be a rough one,” says Janice Stillman, editor of The Old Farmer’s Almanac. “Sweaters and snow shovels should be unpacked early and kept close by throughout the season. The good news is that the extra precipitation—which will fall as rain or snow depending where you are—will help with any drought issues left over from the summer.”
AccuWeather staff agree. With the exception of severe weather over the much of the eastern third of the country, Accuweather expects this winter will range from cold with above-normal snow in the Upper Midwest to cooler – and possibly wetter – for parts of western Texas and New Mexico.
The Eastern seaboard could have a mild start to the winter, but by no means do forecasters expect a snow drought.

Meteorological service Weather Works also sees a good winter for snow-lovers across much of the Corn Belt, with the potential for several big storms across the high Plains and Midwest throughout the season. Read more here.
Meanwhile, The Weather Channel and NOAA have warmer forecasts, especially for the Southwest. The long-range forecast sees warmer-than-average temperatures extending from Colorado through western Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas and stretching as far west as the California/Arizona border.
