The overall Holstein calf champion at the All Breeds All Britain Calf Show, held at The Three Counties Showground, Malvern at the weekend, was Riverdane SVS Atlee from Mark, Sue and Jodie Nutsford. Shown for the Western Club by Larissa Jones.
This August-born Sandy-Valley Saloon heifer is out of Ridgefield Gold Atlee and stood champion at the Western Calf Show qualifier on her only other outing. Gold Atlee is a VG89 scored second calver who was first at the Dairy Event as a senior heifer after being purchased as a maiden heifer at the Ridgefield dispersal for 20,000gns. Riverdane Sid Atlee, a maternal sister to the champion stood first junior heifer in milk at the Royal Welsh Show earlier this year.
She was described by judge David Booth from Feizor Holsteins as: “A well balanced heifer with a lot of dairy quality, width through her rump, open spring of rib and walked very well on great feet and legs.”
Standing reserve to her was Carhall Brady Elizabeth 4 from Anthony Jackson and Andrew Parkinson and led by Helen Eastham for Lancashire HYB. Purchased as a calf from Ian Mallinson’s Carhall dispersal for 900gns, she was fourth at UK Dairy Expo, first at Great Eccleston and first and honourable mention at the Lancashire qualifier. Sired by Butz-Butler Atwood Brady she is out of a VG88 dam by Shottle and goes back to the National Show champion Carhall Lyster Elizabeth who is classified Ex93.
“This stylish, long heifer is very open ribbed and again tracked well on good feet and legs,” added David Booth.
Honourable mention went to HYB members Stephanie Whittaker and James Doherty with their November 2013-born Firstlook Aftershock Ricki. She was calf champion at the Shropshire qualifier and is out of the maximum scored second calved dam Tameside Ricki 9 who herself stood second at the Dairy Event and Northern Expo. James purchased Tamside Ricki 9 as a young calf at his grand-father’s dispersal sale.
Saturday’s showmanship judging was of an incredibly high standard and emerging as overall champion under judge Jessica Hassall’s observant eye was mature class winner Anna Stable.
Commenting on her judging Jessica Hassall said: “It was a daunting task to sort out the handlers, as the standard was incredibly high, however, the top handlers were the most consistent, precise and efficient at showing their calves.”
Celebrating her 25th birthday on show day, Anna was representing the Lancashire Club for the first year having moved from Yorkshire when she married Tom Stable from the Boltonmanor herd last September.
Earlier this year she stood honourable mention in the showmanship at UK Dairy Expo and in 2010 was reserve champion at the All Breeds All Britain 2011. Anna is manager of HYB’s generous sponsors Semex’s mating programme Promate.
“The champion and reserve handlers were exceptional,” added Jessica, “They could go far in any ring across the world.”
Standing reserve was Scotland South’s intermediate class winner Alison Hunter. Alison led her own heifer Letterkenny Explode Laurie who has previously stood champion calf at the Scottish qualifier. In 2012 Alison finished fifth having qualified as the champion handler at the Scottish calf show.
Taking honourable mention was Stephanie Whittaker leading her honourable mention calf Firstlook Aftershock Ricki. Stephanie, aged 25, is the Europe, Middle East and Africa Dairy Brand Manager for ABS. No stranger to success at this event, she has finished honourable mention three times and reserve twice. Together with boyfriend James Doherty she has 10 Holsteins under the Firstlook prefix.
Over the weekend judging took place for the best team stand presentation and tidy lines. Border and Lakeland won both these sections as well as winning the showmanship team award for points accumulated throughout the classes.
Totalling the most points in the calf classes was the Lancashire team edging them in front to take the top team award.
Winning the Dick Stapleton trophy for the most helpful young breeder throughout the weekend was Richard Bostock from the Staffordshire Club. He had been exceptionally helpful to other teams, particularly helping the Isle of Man co-ordinate calves to borrow for the weekend.
Also making a return to the calf show after an absence of 10 years were calves from Northern Ireland. Although the Club have previously competed with calves from the mainland, this year’s journey across the water was made worthwhile with Ards Atwood Ashlyn finishing second for the Patton family, the team also picked up two fourths with Priestland 5564 Fever Farrah and Ards Dimond Barbie.
British Friesians:
Judge Sarah Liddle found her British Friesian champion in Oakalby Quandrant Sheila 50 from E S Burroughs and Son. This one was champion calf at Suffolk Show and a first prize winner at Norfolk Show. She is by Deangate Quandrant and is out of Oakalby Rebel Sheila 38.
Reserve to her was the privately purchased Culverness Honeyschaap 131 from Aintree. Bred by Peter Bellingham, she was shown by Sarah Williams and was first at the Midlands Calf Show. By Celverness Sealion, she’s out of Celverness Honeyschaap 101 and comes from three generations of Ex dams.
The Honourable mention went to Leasbeck Quion Cherry 2 from Leasbeck. Shown by Rosie Howarth, she’s by Deangate Quion and out of Adams Cherry 13 and was her first ever show outing.
In the British Friesian showmanship championship judge Tom Barrett tapped out Andrea Vale to take the honours. Leading the champion British Friesian calf, Oakalby Quadrant Sheila 50, 23 year old Andrea came through from the mature coloured breeds class. She has also stood champion at Suffolk and reserve at Norfolk Show.
Taking reserve spot was Liam Banns who also came through from the mature section. Leading Oakalby Quadrant Brenda 24, Liam who is 21 works full time for the Burroughs family at Oakalby.
