Premier Kathleen Wynne met the press on February 21st 2013 to address rural media questions.  She stated that, in addition to being the Premier, she has decided for one year to take on the portfolio of Minister of Agriculture and Food. “The Ontario Agriculture and Food Industry, the second largest industry in the province, is critical to Ontario’s success!”

Premier Wynne openly and constructively responded to questions and stated positions on a number of fronts.

  • “I am a complete believer in and strong ally of Supply Management. I will clearly take that message to Canadian Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz, as he negotiates trade deals around the world”
  • “I will strengthen and bring back to the House a Local Food Act that includes an education and awareness component, as I know that Ontarians want to buy locally produced food.”
  • “Research, innovation and investment is paramount to the future health and sustainability of Agriculture. My Ministry is putting in place the final details for the provincial-federal support and development program Growing Forward 2.”
  • Premier Wynne envisions a more efficient process for farmers to use in interacting with government across numerous ministries including Agriculture and Environment.
  • “The Ministry of Agriculture and Food is working closely with the Ontario Horse Industry to have a racing industry that is sustainable – even though smaller and different” than in the past.

It is refreshing to see that Premier Kathleen Wynne appears to be a politician who is prepared to put agriculture at the forefront.
