Mexico is restructuring its dairy sector in the shape of a new industry federation to eradicate the need for milk powder imports.
The Mexican Dairy Federation aims to restructure the industry, promoting greater efficiency and uniting small-scale producers.
Greater consumption of dairy products and job creation are headline issues for the country’s 11 billion litre a year sector, said the government commenting on the announcement.
The new federation was unveiled this week in front of over 200 representatives of 25 states by SAGARPA (secretariat of agriculture, livestock, rural development, fisheries and food).
The meeting discussed the rapid changes in the dairy industry over the last twenty years. During this time milk output in Mexico has trebled, putting the onus on traders to look for foreign buyers.
SAGARPA sees main opportunities lying in the Caribbean and Central American regions.
Furthermore, the assembly noted the changing consumption patterns and a growing desire for the public to learn more about ‘specific characteristics’ of the product.
Extending exports and increasing financing from banking institutions were flagged as priorities for the federation.
