An Easter Sunday fire devastated a beloved dairy farm in Waterbury, Vt. established in 1866.
Fire officials say “nothing is salvageable” at Wallace Farm on Blush Hill Road.
A barn and two farm houses are destroyed. All livestock was lost, according to Waterbury Fire Chief Gary Dillon.
The fire started around dinnertime. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
Chief Dillon says the old, dry wood in the structures helped the fire spread through the buildings.
No people were hurt.
Dozens of firefighters from at least five area stations worked to bring down and contain the flames Sunday night.
“All the livestock that were in the barn are dead. We did get her dog out of her house so she’s got her dog but she’s got virtually nothing else but friends and family. She’s very well-known, a very wonderful person,” said Chief Dillon about the owner, Rosina Wallace.
The Wallace Farm is more than a farm.
It’s a place for children to learn about farming.
According to a profile on the farm by Cabot Cheese, Rosina Wallace, a fifth generation farmer, welcomes students on to her property to teach them about farm life.
