Routine tests confirmed bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in a small beef herd in the north east of Michigan yesterday, the state’s second positive case in 2015.
The outbreak lies in Alcona County in the north east of Michigan, where the disease is endemic in wild deer.
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development called an informational meeting for cattle farmers in the area for 6 August.
A total of 62 cases of TB have now been found in Michigan since 1998, the department said.
A government strategy is in place to eradicate TB in the white tailed deer and elk populations of the state.
Assistant state veterinarian, Dr Rick Smith, said: “Finding TB is always hard on the impacted farm and this case illustrates that any size herd can be infected, which is why MDARD works with producers of all sizes to mitigate their risk to help prevent the transmission of the disease into their herds from wild deer.”
