Started in 1999, for youth ages 13 to 25, the European Young Breeders School attracts teams from across Europe. This year they will gather in Battice, Belgium to participate in the annual event that aims to teach young breeders how to judge, prepare their animals for a show, and market their genetics. The European Young Breeders School is a five day event run by AWE. The school attracts around 140 young members from up to 25 different countries.
Team Canada is selected from the winners of provincial competitions and/or successful candidates determined through an interview process held within their region. This year the Canadian team consists of Bobby Tolhurst, Martha Mackinnon, Teresa Hylkema, Cynthia Campbell, Connor Halpenny and Rebecca Redner.
The event involves hands-on workshops including bedding, showmanship & clipping, as well as classroom-based sessions such as marketing your farm business. After three days of workshops & practice, the youngsters put their skills to good use in stock judging, showmanship & calf classes.
