Supersire from Sahara is Star at Sedgemoor to a record 15,000gns

Getting top price of the day at 15,000gns was Sahara Supersire Jessica. Having a gPLI of £257, she is the highest ever gPLI heifer to be sold at a sale in the UK. She joins the Dibble family at their Bycott herd in Tiverton.

A large crowd from across the UK were welcomed to Sedgemoor Auction Centre on Thursday 12th June by Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt for Holstein UK’s 2014 Genetic Elite Sale. With genomics at the forefront of the breeding industry it was only fitting that the highest genomic PLI heifer ever to sell in the UK took the top price of 15,000gns.

The October 2013 born “Sahara Supersire Jessica”, from Sahara Holsteins of Monmouth, fully justified her 15,000gns price tag with a GPLI of £257 she is in the top 15 in the country, has a full brother at Cogent and out of arguably the best Jeeves cow in Europe. After spirited bidding the delighted successful purchasers were the Dibble family who own the “Bycott” herd in Devon and made the most of the opportunity to purchase two of the highest genomic lots. At 15,000gns this is the highest priced achieved at Sedgemoor Auction Centre since it opened in 2008.
10,100gns was paid for the hugely admired “Wiltor Day Cherry”, brought to the UK via an embryo this calf is from the best line of the Barbie family with the mother being a full sister to popular bulls, “Cashcoin” and “Cashmoney” consigned by David & Claire Jones, she travels back to Northern Ireland to join the “Crankey” Herd of Kyle Henry and Family.
The Miller family and Chris Tallis from Evesham sold “Shanael Uno Echo”, bred from a VG87 pointed Jeeves Dam from the UFM Dubs Eroy Family, she was the highest GTPI catalogued, and sold to Nick Pole of Shepton Mallet at 7500gns. Travelling all the way from Cheshire was “Riverdane Allie Red” from Mark & Susan Nutsford, this red heifer was bred from the Apple/Aiko family and sold to the “Perrins” herd in Devon for the Hussel family for 5800gns.
At 5000gns was the February 2014 born “Coxongreen Doorman Barbie”, this high type heifer again from the Barbie family was consigned from Ron Tomkinson of Staffordshire and sold to David Buchanan of “Happy Holsteins” in Northern Ireland. The closest vendors to the Market were Randolph and Brian Miller from the Moorshard herd who entered three super heifers that were much admired at their herd visit the previous day, their Meridian Alicia bred heifer from an VG89 second lactation Goldwyn heads east to be shown by Mike Carr of the “Springbird” Herd at 4900gns.
The heifers on offer sold to 43 different buyers from 17 counties, travelling to Northern Ireland Scotland and all across England and Wales. This was the furthest South that this Sale has ever been staged and the very strong contingent of West Country purchasers fully justified the holding of the sale at Sedgemoor Auction Centre.  There was an 81% clearance rate on the day which produced an impressive average of £3,586.
