It is with great sadness that we report the Brown Swiss world lost a great breeder. Jeremy McDonald of Middletown, Virginia was killed in an accident Friday, December 11th.Mr. McDonald was born in 1976, in Winchester, Virginia, the son of Gary W. and Sharon R. McDonald. Jeremy was a graduate of Sherando High School (the first graduating class). He was a farmer on the family farm “Shen-Val Farm” and a livestock judge that traveled the world. He was very passionate in showing cattle and lived for farming. Jeremy enjoyed wrestling and was the first Regional Champion from Sherando High School. He was a Virginia FFA State Star Farmer and won many State, Regional and National Livestock Competitions. Jeremy had a great insight for people, he never met a stranger at a cow show, had a great love for family and would never “cut himself short” always giving his absolute best in everything that he did.
He married Melissa A. “Missy” Purtlebaugh on December 24, 2002, in Winchester, Virginia.
Surviving with his wife and parents is his son, Tyler J. McDonald.
His sister, Brandie Jo McDonald, preceded him in death.
- I’ve known Jeremy for the most of his life he was just a little tiny guy the first time I met him. His dad bought him a cow named Candice for a little guy he could show her like a Pro. As the years went on we got to watch him grow up learn how to farm everything his dad showed him on how to farm he would do it better than his dad. That made Gary & SharonMcDonald so proud of him. His love for Cows was extra special he had a great eye for dairy and beef. I got to watch him judge with Wayne Sliker at World Dairy Expo it was so nice to see this event happen in his life. It was a dream of mine to see him in the ring at World Dairy Expo to judge the Brown Swiss show as an official in the future that’s not going to happen now.
Jeremy married Missy McDonald his love for her was real there would be times we sit down and talk on how he could better love is wife how to work through issues. Then they had there son Tyler he’s a splitting image of Jeremy. Jeremy you’re going to be missed by so many. Love you man RIP see you in heaven.
Posted by Allen Bassler - I have been at a loss for words in responding to the tragic accident that took Jeremy McDonald’s life. We often talked cows, people, and the future. Few, if any, are able to visually dissect and appraise the bovine as quickly and accurately as Jeremy. He also had a great insight for people and the agricultural industry. His family, many friends and the industry have lost a special young man way too soon. Rather than mention many fond memories, I have elected to re-post a heart-warming picture of son Tyler winning the winter calf class after manuvering his way to the top…..His Dad tought him well !! NO ONE could have been more proud than Dad unless it was his mother Missy McDonald. May God Bless and comfort Tyler, Missy, and The McDonald family.

Family and friends of the McDonalds have established a GoFundMe website to help the McDonalds deal with expenses, and to set up a trust fund for Tyler.
