Milk moustaches can net college scholarships

Kylie Koerperich from Holbrook High School was last year’s milk moustache winner in the Arizona Milk Producers contest

The Arizona Milk Producers is kicking off its annual college scholarship program in which Arizona students can win one of three scholarships, as well as tickets for college football games, by showing off their best milk moustaches.

The first-place winner will receive a $12,000 scholarship, the second-place winner will receive $10,000 and the third-place winner will receive $8,000. Additional students will be awarded tickets to football games at Arizona State University, University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University.

To enter, students simply upload a photo of their best milk mustache to the Arizona Milk Producers Facebook page, along with a short description of how and why dairy “moo-ves” them. The photo must also feature a dairy product, such as milk, yogurt or cheese.

Applicants are encouraged to be creative with their photos, showing how dairy plays a role in their day-to-day lives.

“While college students are transitioning from youth to adulthood, it’s as important as ever for them to maintain a healthy diet. Dairy products like milk, yogurt and cheese help give them energy for their busy schedules and late-night study sessions,” said Colleen Bergum, industry relations manager for Arizona Milk Producers. “This scholarship helps raise awareness of the importance of dairy among college students, many of whom are making independent decisions about their diet for the first time.”

Last year’s first-place winner was a senior at Holbrook High School. Kylie Koerperich’s winning image depicted her lying in a chalk drawing of the sun and playing the guitar alongside a refreshing glass of milk. Kylie currently a freshman at NAU, studying speech-language sciences and technology.

Starting Aug. 23 and continuing throughout the 2013 college football season, each week three randomly drawn contestants will receive a pair of tickets to the next ASU, UA and NAU home football game. From this group of weekly winners, 15 finalists will be selected based on their entry and will receive a pair of seats to the Fiesta Bowl football game on Jan. 1, 2014. At the Fiesta Bowl game, the top three scholarship winners will be announced.

Scholarship nominees must be Arizona residents eligible for the 2014 term or currently enrolled with a minimum of 12 credit hours at an Arizona university. Official rules, details and drawing dates are posted on the official sweepstakes Facebook page at www.facebook.com/AzMilkProducers and atwww.dairycouncilofaz.org.
