HYB Australian Exchange Returns for 2019

For the third year running, Holstein UK is excited to announce that they have teamed up with Holstein Australia to offer a member of Holstein Young Breeders the opportunity to discover a world of dairying down under as part of the 2019 Australian Exchange. The all-expenses-paid trip offers one lucky HYB member the opportunity of a lifetime where they can visit a wide range of Australian dairy farms, take part in International Dairy Week and see some of the country’s top tourist attractions and natural wonders.

The Exchange will focus on learning, practical on-farm experience, skills development, networking and gaining first hand knowledge of how dairy farming compares in Australia to the UK. In return, the winner will be an excellent ambassador for Holstein UK and keep a blog detailing their time in Australia to tell everyone back home what they’ve been up to. They will also take lots of photographs and write an article for the Holstein UK Journal on their return.

The winner will be required to arrive in Australia at the beginning of January and the exchange will last for approximately one month. Upon arriving in Australia, the winner will be met by their first host family before traveling to Youth Camp and getting involved in competitions which may include clipping, leading and judging, along with going on farm tours and taking part in practical workshops. Following this, the winner will be hosted on a range of dairy farms which will present the opportunity to gain practical experience and do some sight-seeing. During the trip, the winner will attend International Dairy Week, visiting sales and joining in with the Youth Competition.

Heather Martin who took part in the 2018 Exchange says “It was one of the best things I have ever experienced in my life! I met so many amazing people in Australia and have kept in contact with so many of them. I hope one day that I will be able to head back out to Australia to catch up with some of the people I met during my exchange and I am looking forward to hosting Amabel Grinter when she comes to the UK on the return exchange this September. I learnt so much about a completely different way of life and the challenges they face by farming in such a different climate. During my time in Australia, I visited farms which had been affected by volcanoes, wildfires and droughts and it makes you appreciate the relatively stable weather we have here in the UK. From milking goats, visiting some of Australia’s largest dairy farms and seeing Australia’s first EX97 ‘Fairvale Morty Lady 51’to seeing some of the best scenery I have ever seen and swimming in blue pools in the middle of the bush, I would recommend this trip to anyone in HYB and can’t wait to hear all about it next year!”

To apply, all you need to do is head to the HYB website and fill in the entry form to pursuade our Judges why you’re the best person to represent Holstein UK in Australia.
