meta Midwest Jersey Show 2026: Journey Claims Grand Champion

Highview Balin Journey Wins Grand Champion at the 2026 Midwest Spring National Jersey Show

Highview Balin Journey proved that longevity still has a mighty loud voice in the Jersey ring.

Judge Kyle Natzke selected the eight-year-old Production Cow, exhibited by Milk Source Genetics of Kaukauna, Wisconsin, as Grand Champion of the 2026 Midwest Spring National Jersey Show, held during the Wisconsin Spring Dairy Showcase. Journey, a Balin daughter with seven calves behind her, rose above a quality group on the strength of her dairy frame, rib, openness, and the kind of udder longevity breeders love to see when a cow has truly stood the test of time.

Reserve Grand Champion honors went to Iota Video Ella, the winning Senior Two-Year-Old exhibited by En-Mar Holsteins and Lin-Crest Farms of Wahoo, Nebraska. Honorable Mention Grand Champion was Bos Joel Spicy, the winning Four-Year-Old exhibited by Reuter Dairy, David Petersheim, and Steinridge Jerseys of Peosta, Iowa.

Natzke made it clear in his final reasons that the day’s champion was hard to deny. Journey brought age, production, and structure together in one impressive package. She carried her udder high above the hocks, showed tremendous spring and openness through the fore and rear rib, and maintained the dairy frame and femininity expected of a modern Jersey winner. Ella, the Intermediate Champion, followed as a beautiful young cow with rear udder quality, seam definition, and openness of rib, while Spicy, recently fresh, stood close behind as a balanced Four-Year-Old with mobility, udder quality, and room to look even better with more days in milk.

It was not the largest Jersey show in numbers, but the quality was real from the heifer classes through the aged cows. The show had a strong Wisconsin flavor, but also pulled elite entries from across the country, with cattle from Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, Kentucky, Texas, Idaho, New Mexico, California, and beyond making their presence felt.

1st Four-Year-Old

Journey’s final march to the purple banner came from the Production Cow class, where she stood alone but certainly did not need company to make an impression. At eight years old and fresh for the seventh time, she still wore a high, functional udder and displayed the open, dairy rib that separates old cows with production credentials from old cows that are simply still around. That matters. In a breed where refinement and udder quality often dominate the conversation, Journey added the kind of rugged longevity that gives a champion extra weight.

Ella made the strongest push from the young cow division. Earlier in the day, she won the Senior Two-Year-Old class and went on to Intermediate Champion. Natzke praised her width, strength, power, and more nearly level udder floor, and in the grand drive he kept coming back to her rear udder quality and depth of seam. She was the young cow with the bloom and balance to challenge an aged winner.

Spicy completed the top trio after winning the Four-Year-Old class and taking Reserve Senior Champion. Recently fresh with her third calf, she brought balance, slope from hooks to pins, and a smooth way of moving around her udder. Natzke noted more than once that with additional time fresh, she could be an even tougher cow to get around.

Junior Show Champions

The Junior Show belonged to Norse Haven Casino Geneva, exhibited by Grant, Grace, Hannah, and Ellie Fremstad of Westby, Wisconsin. Geneva, the second-place Four-Year-Old in the open show, was named Grand Champion of the Junior Show and Champion Bred & Owned.

Geneva earned her Junior Show title with width, power, strength, and a beautiful mammary system. Natzke called her Senior Champion of the Junior Show handily, especially admiring the strength she carried over the Five-Year-Old, SVHeaths Colton Jazlyn-ET. Merry, the Junior Show Intermediate Champion, moved into Reserve Grand Champion with the mammary quality and clean dairy style that made her one of the most complete young cows of the day.

Senior Champion Drive

The senior cow show may not have been deep in numbers, but it produced the day’s Grand Champion and several of the most memorable cows in the ring.

Journey was the undeniable story here. Natzke pointed to her age, seven calves, high udder, ultra-dairy style, and rib structure as the reasons she rose to the top. Spicy, the Four-Year-Old winner, was admired for her balance and mobility, while Finger Puppet represented the Aged Cow class with strength of loin, rib spring, and maturity.

In the Junior Show senior drive, Geneva led the way, followed by Jazlyn and MM Kid Rock Chartreuse-ET.

Ella had the advantage in width, strength, and udder floor, while Merry countered with rear udder quality, venation, dairyness, and femininity. South Mountain Viva Las Vegas brought a very bright future from the Junior Two-Year-Old class, showing frame, balance, and a beautiful udder.

In the Junior Show, Merry moved to the top of the Intermediate drive.

Final Word

The 2026 Midwest Spring National Jersey Show rewarded cows that could move, work, and last. Natzke’s reasons consistently came back to functional structure: rear feet and legs, udder height and width, rib openness, rump structure, topline strength, and the ability to look good while traveling naturally around the ring.

That made Highview Balin Journey a fitting Grand Champion. She was not just a pretty winner. She was a productive, aged Jersey cow that still looked like she had work left to do. For breeders who value cows that combine show-ring style with real-world longevity, Journey’s win was the kind that sticks.
