Former dairy worker convicted on animal cruelty charges

A New Mexico dairy worker, caught on video abusing dairy cows, has been convicted.

Jose Luis Zuniga-Lira pleaded no contest to animal cruelty after video showed him and three other employees of Winchester Dairy kicking, punching and whipping cows with metal chains.

Lira was sentenced to 364 days in jail but that will be suspended if he completes probation. The cases against the three other workers are still pending.

Winchester Dairy provided milk for Leprino Foods which supplied cheese to all major pizza chains across the country.

Leprino dropped Winchester as a supplier as soon as the video surfaced.
