East Central/Select Sires awarded five, $1,000 scholarships on Aug. 19, at the East Central/Select Sires Annual Meeting at the Crowne Plaza, Madison. The scholarships were open to incoming and current college students at two- and four-year universities, pursuing agriculture majors. Applicants were judged on academics, agricultural and community involvement, as well as dedication to the agriculture industry.
The scholarship winners are as follows.
· Chad Bruss, Markesan, will be a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville this fall studying dairy science. In high school, Bruss was involved in 4-H, FFA, National Honor Society, basketball, cross country and student council. After college he plans to return home to farm.
· Karsen Haag, Mount Horeb, is starting her second year at Southwest Technical College to study agribusiness after studying dairy herd management last year. At Southwest, Haag serves as a student ambassador, on student senate, and is a member of the dairy judging team. She also plans to own her own registered Holstein farm, continue to advance the genetics of her herd, and promote the dairy industry.
· Taylor Holterman, Watertown, is entering her senior year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring in life sciences communication with certificate in entrepreneurship. Holterman is very involved on campus serving as the Collegiate Farm Bureau President and also being a member of the Association of Women in Agriculture and the Badger Dairy Club. Upon graduation, she hopes to work in administration or communications within agriculture.
· Elizabeth Sarbacker, Verona, will be a freshman this fall at University of Wisconsin-Madison, studying dairy science. In high school, Sarbacker was involved in FFA, National Honor Society and Spanish Club. On campus, Sarbacker plans on becoming a member of the Association of Women in Agriculture and the Badger Dairy Club. She will be pursuing a dairy-related career.
· Jordan Siemers, Newton, will be a freshman this fall at Cornell University studying dairy business and dairy cattle genetics. In high school, Siemers was involved in various sports, FFA, 4-H, National Honor Society, Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association, and church functions. After graduation, he hopes to gain experience in the agriculture industry before returning to his family’s dairy farm.
