‘Complete sire’ Observer builds confidence in genomic indexes

De-Su Observer Daughter

Confidence in genomic indexes is growing fast and the arrival of De-Su Observer high in the daughter-proven rankings published this week in the UK, the USA and throughout the dairying world, provides compelling evidence of their reliability.

The Planet son, Observer, was sold as a young genomic sire by World Wide Sires UK in 2010 and this week jumps into 11th position in the UK’s Profitable Lifetime Index (PLI) daughter-proven ranking.

By far the highest type transmitter within the top 50 PLI list, Observer lives up to all the expectations promised by his genomic index. His Type Merit is a massive 3.21 and his PLI an impressive £227 – a combination unmatched by any other sire and vindicating his early widespread use as a sire of sons.

Today, Observer features in the pedigree of many of the leading genomic sires including three of the PLI top 10, while his milking daughters are beginning to strengthen his Predicted Transmitting Ability figures.

Now with 819kg milk and over 50kg fat plus protein, he also transmits exceptional daughter fertility (Fertility Index 4.4), long lifespans and low cell counts. An A2A2 beta casein transmitter and easy calving bull into the bargain, Observer has the truly ‘no holes’ index breeders are seeking.

“He really is the complete package,” says Owain Harries from the Cogent Group of which World Wide Sires UK is part. “I’ve seen a dozen or so milking daughters in the USA and they are consistently balanced and well put together, with udder conformation that’s their most outstanding trait.”

This is confirmed in his score of 3.3 for udder composite, reflecting his daughters’ consistently high and well-attached udders. They’re also a type to suit any commercial breeder, with a stature score of around breed average.

“Observer’s index says it all, but most importantly, it strengthens our confidence in genomic indexes,” says Mr Harries.

And with its exclusive rights to market bulls from the top studs around the world – including Select Sires and Accelerated in the USA – there’s no UK company that can exceed World Wide Sires UK’s depth and variety of genomic sires.

“In fact, World Wide Sires internationally has almost 50 per cent of the top 500 genomic bulls and is gaining a reputation as the leading source for genomics,” he says.

“Genomic sires are certainly becoming an increasingly important part of our portfolio and Observer is one of numerous recently proven bulls that have reinforced the industry’s confidence in genomic technology.”

Observer’s pedigree features seven generations of VG or EX dams and a sire stack of perfectly complementary matings. It reads Planet x De-Su Oman 6121 VG86 (O-Man) x De-Su BW Marshal Georgia VG88 (BW Marshall) x De-Su Patron Gold EX90 (Patron) x Kerndtway Lead Gretchen VG87 (Leadman) x Kerndtway Goldust VG86 (Secret).
