Central Valley dairy welcomes triplet calves

A Central Valley dairy is now over the moon, celebrating something rarely seen.

Maureen Lemos at Lockwood III Dairy in Waterford, Stanislaus County, says a feeder first thought the heifer had twins.

“Our milker went over to check on her and noticed another one!” she says. “My husband and I were both at the dairy and go to see them right away!”

She says all three were standing and running within minutes.

The third generation dairy farmers milk 500 Holsteins.

It has named the calves Oreo, Cookies, and Cream.

“We had never had triplet heifer calves, but didn’t realize how rare it really was until we started looking for statistical data!” Lemos says.

She found the likelihood of healthy triplet calves is 1 in 700,000.

“We’re very excited and thankful for these girls!” Lemos said.
