660 gallons of milk given away in Waupun

Within three hours Wednesday, an estimated 400 to 500 people left Kwik Trip in Waupun with 660 gallons of free milk.

The give-away started at 8 a.m., and was over before 11 a.m.

“It was nice of the dairies,” said Kwik Trip manager Joe Lunde. “It’s the first time it’s been done here. It’s very neat.”

It’s June Dairy Month, and 13 local dairies thought this would be a good way to celebrate.

“This is awesome,” said Gloria Lemke as she picked up 2 gallons of milk. “My husband loves milk, and drinks about a gallon every two days.”

In the first half hour, as people left the store, they were asked what they thought about the free milk.

Emma Stelsel, a summer intern at Hilltop Dairy, said, “The event went really well today, the main adjective I heard used was ‘awesome’. A lot of people were very grateful, and many made comments like ‘thank you for what you do’ or ‘thank a farmer’, we really got great responses.

“This was a great opportunity to promote the dairy industry, we certainly reached a lot of people. This is the first year we have ran this event, and is something that will likely happen again.”

Participating dairies and farms were: Bresser Family Farm, Bruins Dairy, Buwalda Cotonwood Farms, Daane Dairy, Double S Dairy, Hilltop Dairy, Homeland Dairy, Maple Lane Dairy, Pebble Knoll Dairy, Plum Creek Dairy and Lemmenes Custom Farm, Trifecta Farms, Warmka Holsteins and Wierenga Dairy.
