Royal Welsh Show 2015 Results

Day two of the Royal Welsh Show has seen some of the UK’s best dairy cattle battle it out for the top spot. Here are the stories behind the champions…

Brown Swiss

Jonny Lochhead, Dumfries took control of the Brown Swiss ring, which saw Mark and Sian Williams, Carmarthen dominate the championship for the fourth successive year.

Standing top was the home-bred second lactation, Elite WR Lovely V8 88. Three months calved, it is giving 70kg daily and has yielded 5,800kg in 95 days.

Last year’s show season it secured three inter-breed championships from four shows, the fourth being the Royal Welsh where it was reserve champion.

By Webster Ridge and out of the EX91 2013 All Britain winner Quarry Luke Lovely, it will be competing at Pembrokeshire Show next month.

Reserve

It’s stable mate and last year’s Royal Welsh champion, Quarry Zeus Orange stood reserve.

Shown five months calved in its sixth lactation, the home-bred EX95 Red Brae Prelude Zeus daughter is out of Quarry Collect Orange.

Making up the family’s 200-head herd of 30 Brown Swiss and 170 Holstein cows, it won the breed’s production inspection at the recent Livestock Event.

Heifer

Also in the couple’s five-strong show team was the reserve heifer champion, Elite Jongleur Liz, which stood behind Quarry Jonguleur Bali from Alun and Carloline Davies, Whitland.

HOLSTEIN

Holstein

The Holstein ring saw Brian Weatherup Senior, Fife tap out Sahara Holsteins’ Sahara Atwood Ambrosia 5 as champion from an impressive quality of cattle.

On it’s second outing, after being crowned champion of the Celtic Dairy Showcase in March, it calved in December and is due with it’s third at Christmas. After calving, herd manager David Jones hopes to take the VG89 (max score) cow to the European Holstein Championships in France next year.

This is the third time the Jones family have secured the top spot in the Holstein section.

Reserve

Iwan Morgan, Carmarthen stood reserve with Erie Maplerose PS Lustre, a fourth lactation Picston Shottle daughter.

Home-bred and out of the EX94 Honey Pot Gold Lustre, it calved in May and is yielding 62kg daily.

Scored EX93 (max score), it was reserve heifer champion at the Royal Welsh and Welsh Dairy Show in 2013 and was inter-breed champion at Pembrokeshire Show.

It’s great grand-dam, Idee Lustre was an EX95 Royal Winter Fair champion.

Heifer

Milking 140 Holsteins and 50 Jerseys, Mr Morgan also headed the heifer championship with Nobold Windbrook Joan, bred by Mike Roberts.

Reserve heifer champion was was another Atwood daughter, this time Castellhyfryd Atwood Rosina from S.P. and S.R. Davies, Carmarthenshire.

JERSEY

Jersey

The Morgan’s winning streak continued when they secured the supreme title in the Jersey ring.

Led by Luke Harris and home-bred, Erie Reagan Plait is in it’s second lactation after calving in September and is due again in the same month this year.

Still giving 30kg daily, the Rapid Bay Reagan daughter, out of Bluegrass Signature Diamond Plait will be dried off when it returns home from the show.

It was champion at the Welsh Jersey Festival and Cothibridge Show and is an Excellent second calver.

Jersey

Jersey judge Frank Poskitt, Norfolk selected Bluegrass Excitation Prissy Polly EX93 (max score) from the Wilson family’s Tregibby herd, Cardigan as his reserve.

Bought from Barry and Jenny Daw, Hertford three years ago as a heifer, it was reserve Jersey champion at the recent Livestock Event.

Shown by Arwyn, who is the third generation of the Wilson family to take to the Royal Welsh show-ring, it calved with it’s fourth calf in April and is giving 38kg per day.

Out of Bluegrass Commanders Pretty Polly and by Bridon Excitation it will be competing at UK Dairy Day in September.

Tregibby’s 14-strong show team of Jerseys and Holsteins also featured the reserve champion heifer, Tregibby Panama Tequila. It stood behind Clifton Tequila Bracken from Lizzie Bland, Cumbria.

AYRSHIRE

Ayrshire

Northern Ireland’s John Suffern took centre stage in the Ayrshire section. His pick for champion was Hunnington Fragy 16 from Chris and Lisa Window, West Midlands.

Seven weeks fresh with her second calf and giving 40kg daily, it was reserve and heifer champion at the Royal Welsh in 2014.

The VG89 Hunnington Mandella daughter was also champion at the Livestock Event, South West Dairy Show and Newport Show in the same year.

Reserve

It stood above the heifer Sandyford Ristourn Russet from Blaise Tomlinson, Leicestershire.

The two cows know each other well after standing in reverse positions at this year’s Livestock Event.

Mr Tomlinson’s home-bred heifer, which calved in October and is giving 32kg daily is currently scored VG85 and is due to be re-scored soon.

Standing behind it in the heifer championship was the Window family’s Hunnington Sailor Girl 141.

DAIRY SHORTHORN

After standing reserve champion here last year, it was a joyous victory for Rob and Sue Morgan, Shropshire who clinched top spot in the Dairy Shorthorn championship.

Judge Henry Rawlins, Wiltshire gave his honours to the fifth calver, Dee Lady Hermione EX90.

Shown by daughter Katie on it’s first outing of the season, the Classic daughter calved six weeks ago and is giving 42kg daily.

Bought as a freshly calved heifer at Beeston auction from Dave Jones it was champion at West Midlands Show last year.

It makes up a herd of 420 cows at home.

Reserve

Close behind was Seimon and Eleanor Thomas, Pembrokeshire with the show’s heifer champion, Drisgol Bridesmaid 57.

Making it’s show debut after calving in February and yielding 26kg daily, the home-bred Panorama Lanmine daughter is out of Drisgol Bridesmaid 49.

It joins a herd of 650 mainly Dairy Shorthorn cows back home.

Heifer

Reserve heifer champion was Earlsgift Butterbur 6 from Edward Crank, Cheshire.
