Mid-West Processing Capacity May be Unable to Cope with High Milk Volumes

Between 2010 and 2015, milk production in the US increased by almost 7bn litres, with production in the Mid-West accounting for almost half of this increase, according to UK levy board AHDB Dairy.

Consequently, there are now fears that there is a lack of processing capacity to handle these increased supplies. This has led to recent reports of some producers being forced to dump milk as production reaches its seasonal peak.

So far this year, production in the Mid-West between January and May was up 4.6 per cent on last year. This compares with overall US milk production during the same period, up 1.7 per cent.

In order to address the issue, three cooperatives, including Dairy Farmers of America, are exploring a joint venture to build a cheese plant in Michigan with the ability to process 2.6m litres of milk per day.
