What inputs does the calculator need?
Six inputs: herd size (number of milking cows), milk price ($/cwt), current annual culling rate (%), clinical mastitis cases per 100 cows per year, replacement heifer cost ($), and average annual milk production per cow (lbs). Defaults reflect 2024 US industry averages and can be adjusted with sliders or numeric entry.
Why does the 5-year projection grow faster than 5× the first year?
Because longevity gains compound. Cows retained in Year 1 keep producing milk in Years 2 through 5, and the herd's age profile shifts toward higher-producing mature cows. The Dutch study found AHV cows produce +8,653 kg more lifetime milk and generate +$0.44/day more revenue, so each retained cow's value grows over time. The calculator uses conservative compounding multipliers of 1.00, 2.05, 3.15, 4.30, and 5.50 across Years 1 through 5.
