The great annual festival of the Friesian breed will close on Sunday with the XX National Championship of Handlers

On Saturday, September 25, 2021, a new edition of the National Competition of the Friesian Breed will be inaugurated organized by CONAFE (Confederation of Associations of Spanish Friesian) with the collaboration of Asturiana de Control Lechero-Asociación Frisona (ASCOLAF), under the sponsorship of the Regional Ministry of Rural Development and Natural Resources of the Government of the Principality of Asturias, the City Council of Gijón, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the Chamber of Commerce of Gijón, Central Lechera Asturiana, Caja Rural de Gijón and Caja Rural de Asturias.
In this edition, 205 animals from 40 herds of 8 Autonomous Communities have been registered, with the Principality of Asturias, with 16 farms, being the community with the highest representation.

Among the registered animals is Llinde Ariel Jordan (S.A.T. Ceceño, Cantabria), 2019 CONAFE National Grand Champion Cow.

For its part, the XX National Handlers Championship, in which the skill with which handlers present the animals on the track is valued, will be held on Sunday morning 26, ending the activities of the National CONAFE’21.

This will be followed by the celebration of the National Brown Breed Contest, which will be judged by Javier Freije, CONAFE national judge.

News of the 2021 edition of the National Contest

Among the novelties that the CONAFE 2021 National Friesian Breed Contest will present there will be new awards for the Best Herd and Second National Herd of Calves and Heifers -although this section will not add points for the sections of Best Breeder and Best Autonomy-, as well as new distinctions to the Best National Breeder and Second National Breeder of Calves and Heifers.

A new recognition section will also be held out of competition, which will consist of an exhibition on the track of outstanding cows, according to morphological criteria (rated 4EX or more; minimum lifetime production 80,000 kg) or productive (100,000 kg or more at 30 / 6/21; minimum grade MB), present at the fairgrounds. The animals participating in this section will not have competed in the individual sections of the Contest and will comply with the same general, genealogical, health and preparation and presentation conditions required of the rest of the animals participating in the contest.

It will be held within the framework of AGROPEC

As usual since 2002, the Monographic Fair of the Field and the Agricultural, Livestock, Forestry and Fisheries Industries of Asturias AGROPEC, will once again be the framework of the forty-first edition of the National Contest of the Friesian Breed CONAFE’21, which will be judged by the Catalan Pol Collell.
AGROPEC will guarantee the health safety of those who attend the thirty-fifth edition of this meeting for professionals in the livestock and agricultural sector, which will be held between September 24 and 26, 2021, so that both exhibitors, attendees and company workers who take part in the Fair will be able to develop their activity in the enclosure with all the security guarantees.
Thus, for yet another year, different commercial houses related to the dairy sector will be present with a stand in the central pavilion of the Luis Adaro Fair of Asturias.

Pol Collell, Contest Judge

The contest will be judged by Pol Collell, a native of Manlleu (Barcelona).
Pol Collell has been an active Conafe Judge since 2015. At the national level he has judged, among others, the competitions of Treceño (Asturias), Usías Holstein (Andalusia), Irún (Basque Country), Tineo (Asturias), Moexmu (Galicia), Renedo (Cantabria), Menorca (Balearic Islands) or the Euskal Herria (Tolosa) contest in 2016.

He has also judged competitions in Portugal (Isla Terceria, Trofa and Arazede) and participated as a representative of CONAFE in the meeting of European judges that took place in Germany in September 2018.

In addition to his work as CONAFE national judge, Pol is in charge of the management of the El Campgran family farm and is a regular participant in morphological competitions. In 2016 he won the National Runner-up Young Cow award with an animal from his farm; in 2017 the Calf and Heifer National Runner-up and in 2018 he won the title of Heifer Grand National Champion.

Asturias and Cantabria, which shared the title of Best Autonomy in the last edition held in 2019, are also the Autonomous Communities to which the most Great Champion Cow titles have gone, the first eighteen times and the second sixteen.
Regarding herds, the Asturian Badiola Diploma Livestock is the one that has received the most awards, with eleven titles of Great National Champion Cow and three of Heifer Great National Champion.
Llinde Ariel Jordan, from the Cantabrian livestock S.A.T. Ceceño currently holds the title of CONAFE National Grand Champion Cow by winning the last Friesian breed event held in 2019.

In addition, Gloria Brady Albis, from Gloria Holstein (Cantabria), stood out as Champion Heifer and Grand National Heifer Champion 2019, while in the Calf Championship Venturo Emilio Roma ET, from Casa Venturo (Asturias), won as Champion Heifer of the last National competition.
