250 Animals Die in Barn Fire at Quebec Dairy Farm


A massive fire has ravaged the Monday night facilities of a dairy farm in Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu in Montérégie , and more than 250 animals have died .

The fire broke out around 10 pm in the farm of the 4th Great-Bois. Upon arrival of firefighters, the barn was completely ablaze and part of the roof had already collapsed.

The flames destroyed the large building where the dairy herd was.

According to the director of the fire department of Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu, Robert Phaneuf, about 250 animals were in the barn caught fire. They all perished, except for a few who managed to get out at the start of the fire. At daybreak, the surviving cows were found in the fields around the farm.

Because of the violence of the fire, a dense column of smoke was visible a few kilometers away. The building is a total loss .

According to Mr. Phaneuf, it was one of the biggest farms of theregion .

Firefighters from Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu were supported by their colleagues from Saint-Ours, of St. Barnabas and St. Jude. In all, fifty firefighters were on the scene.

Mechanical shovels were requested to facilitate the extinction of fires in the rubble. The survey of the firemen began Tuesday morning in order to identify the cause of the loss.
