High-placing contest individual Cole Leonard of Virginia’s Riverhead FFA picked up the $1,000 scholarship from the Pennsylvania Dairymen’s Association at the 28th annual Junior Dairy Management Contest, Tuesday, Sept. 16, during 2014 All-American Dairy Show at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center, Harrisburg.
Leonard teamed up with fellow Riverhead FFA members Jake McCall and Isabelle Leornard to bring home the high score in the FFA division. New York State 4-Hers Kieran McCarthey, Casey Porter, Allison Herrick and Katie Sondericker took first place in the 4-H section.
Participants evaluated two classes of dairy cattle, identified feeds, recognized cuts of meat and answered questions about reproduction and business management to help prepare them for careers in the dairy industry.
Six different timed classes were used to evaluate contestants. The five highest scoring individuals were then interviewed about current dairy issues before the final placing was made.
Sponsors for the event included Alltech, All-American Dairy Foundation, Balchem Encapsulates, Church and Dwight Co., Arms & Hammer Products, Elanco Animal Health, Kirby Ag., Land O’ Lakes Milk Co-Op, Maryland-Virginia Milk Producers, Milk Specialties Co. manufacturer of Energy Booster 100, The Old Mill Troy Inc., Pennsylvania Farm Bureau, Princ Agri Products Inc., and PA Dairymen’s Association.
