UK Type proofs shows continued stability and some interesting newcomers

The publication of UK Type proofs today (Tuesday 9th April) sees a new UK-bred number one international Type sire in Heavenly Golden Dreams and some new names on the UK-proven list.

Starting with the top UK-proven sires, the Essex-bred Curtismill Mr Sam retains his number one position with a Type Merit (TM) of 3.18 and Reliability of 84%, a modest increase in both from December. This Regancrest Durham Mr Sam x Mtoto cross, supplied by Genus, sires medium sized daughters with tremendous udders (2.66 Mammary) and good locomotion (2.86 Legs & Feet).

In second spot is newcomer Mr Atlees Altaamazing, whose 60 UK classified daughters give him a Type Merit of 3.05. A Goldwyn x Durham cross, Altaamazing daughters possess shallow, well-attached udders with great rear udder height (2.83 Mammary). Bassingthorpe Bossman from Genus improves his Type Merit slightly to 3.03 to rank third with Reliability of 89% and a Legs & Feet composite of 3.60 while another newcomer, Regancrest Baltimor, slips into fourth spot with a Type Merit of 2.85 with 81% Reliability. The Semex-supplied Baltimor is a Shottle x Durham cross who rates a Mammary score of 2.59. Making up the top five with a stable Type Merit of 2.84 is long time Dairy Daughters high flier Mario Xacobeo, whose 265 UK-classified daughters give him Mammary and Legs & Feet composites of 2.47 and 2.52 respectively.

The remainder of the top 10 sees minor changes in ranking with Plain-O Durham Ross at 2.73 TM, Jenny-Lou Shottle Trump at 2.65, Palmcrest Breakout at 2.59, M.E. Dal Alliance at 2.55 and BB Toy Missile at 2.49.

The International list is topped by newcomer Heavenly Golden Dreams carrying the prefix of Lancashire breeders David and Claire Swale. He was ranked 20th on the Genomic Sire list in December and with Composites of 3.86 for Mammary and 3.56 for Legs & Feet, he looks like being a popular seller for Dairy Daughters. Former number one Toc-Farm Goldsun (Goldwyn x Allen) from Kingstreet Sires ranks second with a 4.38 TM ahead of Bertaiola Mincio (Bolton x Boss Iron) in third with 4.14 TM ahead of another debutant, and a Red one to boot; Apples Absolute-Red from Kingstreet Sires. A Talent son from the well known KHW Regiment Apple-Red EX95, Apples Absolute-Red completes a quartet of +4 Type Merit sires at 4.01, with 3.87 and 3.03 for Mammary and Legs & Feet respectively. His Reliability of 80% comes from 186 daughters classified in the USA and Canada.

Completing the top five is Maple-Downs-I G W Atwood, the number three sire last time, with 3.88 TM. The remainder of the Top 10 consists of sires all ranked similarly in December; Go-Farm WWS Zoltec (3.66 TM), Zandenburg Yoko Sam Yury (3.62), Toc-Farm Goldfish (3.62), Farnear TBR Altaavalon (3.57) and Zelgadis (3.55).

Commenting of the proofs, Holstein UK Breed Research Executive Lucy Andrews-Noden said, “It’s reassuring to see how stable the daughter-proven Type proofs are in the UK, providing much needed confidence to breeders. It’s also exciting to see newcomers such as Heavenly Golden Dreams, Mr Atlees Altaamazing and Apples Absolute-Red emerging to give dairymen alternative choices for their breeding programmes.”
