U.S. Milk Production Up On Year


Breaking News ScreenU.S. dairy producers are producing a lot of milk, spurred on by increases in yield per cow and the number of dairy cattle.

The USDA says production in the top 23 producing states during September was up 2.3% on the year at 15.975 billion pounds.

Production per cow was 35 pounds more than a year ago at 1,842 pounds per cow, the highest for the month since the series of reports started in 2003, and the number of milk cows was also above a year ago at 8.672 head. Those were both down from August.

For the year to date, production in the top 23 production states is 150.083 billion pounds, about 3 billion more than this time last year.

California was the top producer at 3.170 billion pounds, followed by Wisconsin at 2.439 billion and Idaho at 1.228 billion pounds. The highest average was Colorado at 2,140 pounds and the largest herd was California at 1.766 million head.

U.S. production was in September was 16.967 billion pounds, 2.1% above a year ago. The number of dairy cattle was 9.338 million head and average production was 1,817 pounds per cow.

Year to year comparisons for the major statistical categories in the listed Brownfield states:

Illinois: Production of 142 million pounds, down 0.7%; average yield of 1,530 pounds per cow, up 10; herd of 93,000 head, down 1,000

Indiana: Production of 332 million pounds, up 1.8%; average yield of 1,805 pounds per cow, up 25; herd of 184,000 head, up 1,000

Iowa: Production of 397 million pounds, up 4.5%; average yield of 1,880 pounds per cow, up 70; herd of 211,000 head, up 1,000

Michigan: Production of 874 million pounds, up 5.8%; average yield of 2,070 pounds per cow, up 55; herd of 422,000 head, up 12,000

Minnesota: Production of 770 million pounds, up 2.4%; average yield of 1,670 pounds per cow, up 35; herd of 461,000 head, up 1,000

Ohio: Production of 442 million pounds, unchanged; average yield of 1,675 pounds per cow, up 15; herd of 264,000 head, down 2,000

South Dakota: Production of 207 million pounds, up 5.1%; average yield of 1,800 pounds per cow, down 25; herd of 115,000 head, up 7,000

Wisconsin: Production of 2.439 billion pounds, up 3.3%; average yield of 1,910 pounds per cow, up 65; herd of 1.277 million head, down 2,000
