Simon Davies’ Castellhyfryd Spirte Rosina earned a hatrick, taking her third breed title at the Royal Welsh since 2011 and in reserve was Wyndford Goldwyn Erle, from Wilfred Maddock, Shropshire, who stood runner up to Rosina in 2012 at the Royal Welsh.
Sired by Cederwol Sprite and out of Castellhyfryd Sep Storm Rosina, Sprite Rosina last calved in March with her fourth and is currently giving 64kg daily.
Erle is a Braedale Goldwyn daughter and is out of the prolific dam Field of Dreams Formation Erle (Ex95). She won the reserve overall title at Agri Scot in November and has already given 12,000kg this lactation, having calved last October.
Jersey
Taking the top spot in the Jersey ring for a consecutive year was Bluegrass Excitation Prissy Polly, from exhibited by Arwyn Wilson, Cardigan, Ceredigion. Sired by Bridon Excitation she is out of Bluegrass Commanders Pretty Polly and was purchased privately from breeders Barry and Jenny Daw, Hertford Heath, in 2012 for an undisclosed sum. She last calved in April and is currently giving 35kg a day.
In reserve was Glanmor Saber Philox, exhibited, bred and owned by Helen Cox, Carmarthen. Sired by O F Montana Saber she is out of Glanmor Crackers Phoebe. She calved in September and is currently giving 30kg a day.
Dairy Shorthorn
The Dairy Shorthorn championship was awarded to the in-milk prrize winner and last year’s reserve breed champion Gelli Win Jill 2nd, from IL and E Harries, Llanelli, Carmarthenshire. Sired by Hardcore Orthello’s Moonshine she is out of Marletcote Win Jill 6th. Last calved in May she is currently giving 51kg a day.
In reserve was Elkington Amber Princess 10th from Rob and Sue Morgan, Whitchurch, Shropshire and shown by their daughter Lucy. Sired by Loughdale Rising Star Red she is out of Elkington Amber Princess 4th and was bred by MS Davies. She last calved in February and is giving 33kg a day.
Ayrshire
Winning the Ayrshire championship was Ceredigion’s Phillip Reed’s Rhos Aber Reality, sired by Palmyra Tri-star Reality and out of Rhos Brenda. It was the first major title win this year for Reality, which calved in April and is currently giving 46kg.
In reserve was Willhome Jack Pansy from Stuart Williams, from Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire.
Sired by Holmland Jake Red she is out of Willhome Gold Pansy.
Brown Swiss
Mark and Sue Williams, from Carmarthen, took the double under Brown Swiss judge P Oliver, Northants.
Scooping the breed championship was their fourth calver Quarry Zeus Orange Ex94, sired by Red Brae Prelude Zues and out of Quarry Collect Orange. She is currently giving 34kg daily and won the reserve championship at the Welsh Dairy Show last year.
In reserve was their homebred junior champion Elite WR Lovely, sired by Webster Ridge and out of Quarry Luke Lovely. She is giving 37kg daily.
