No signs of a dairy sell-off after Murray Goulburn price cut

PREDICTIONS of a flood of dairy cows into saleyards are yet to eventuate.

Dairy cow numbers increased at the Shepparton prime market yesterday, but agents were unsure if the Murray Goulburn price cut was entirely to blame.

Agents expected to yard 1190 cows — with most anticipated to be dairy cows — representing a large increase on the week before.

Sam Nelson, of Mulcahy Nelson Livestock, said about 900 dairy cows were on offer.

“I wouldn’t say it is directly because of that (the MG price cut). People are culling cows that, if things were good, they wouldn’t normally cull,” he said.

“They are the cows they are not prepared to carry through winter.
