The mass of rain this week saw farmers taking the day off and flocking to AgriScot to meet with friends and do business. Louise Hartley reports from the Royal Highland Centre.’
It what is thought to be a first for AgriScot, the Laird family, Blythbridge, Peebleshire took both the champion and reserve Holstein titles before going on to clinch the SuperCow title.
Dominating the show was their fourth calver, Blythbridge Blackjack Jackie EX94. Calving in March and giving 72kg daily it was supreme champion at the Northern Dairy Expo last month, first in its class at UK Dairy Day this year and class winner at the 2014 Royal Highland. Sired by Regancrest Mr Blackjack and out of Blythbridge Champion Jackie, its daughter is selling in December’s Black and White sale.
The Laird’s reserve Holstein was another fourth calver, Blythbridge Goldwyn Rosalee EX94. It was honourable mention at the Royal Highland and champion at this year’s Livestock Event.
Reserve SuperCow was the Ayrshire Cuthill Towers Miss Blondie 2 EX94 from Arthur and Susan Lawrie, Kinross. By Cuthill Towers White Knight and calving in September with its fourth, it was champion at the 2014 Royal Highland and reserve in 2013.
Keith Davidson, Castle Douglas took reserve for the Ayrshires with Halmyre Urr Mayflower 240 EX91, which calved in September with its fifth.
Jersey
Leading the Jerseys was the second lactation Fourcrosses Tequila Black Rose VG88, bred by Andrew and Helen Wright and housed with the Laird family, Blythbridge.
Reserve and second in its class to the champion was Clifton Cranberry Bracken VG88, bred by Stephen Bland, Penrith and jointly owned with Robert Hunter, Lanarkshire. It was reserve champion at the Royal Highland this year.
Red and White
John Adamson, Lanark took the top Red and White rosette with Swaites Nice Girl 14 GP84. Calving in July with it’s second, it won the Lanarkshire Herds Competition champion cow this year.
SuperHeifer
The SuperHeifer title went the Ayrshire, Bruchag Talent Evelyn. Bred by James McAlister, Bute, it is shared with Jim and Gilmour Lawrie, Ayrshire who bought the half share after Gilmour made it champion Rothesy Show earlier this year.
Calving in August and giving 32kg daily, it is a West Mossgiel Class Talent daughter.
This is second SuperHeifer the Lawrie family has won in four years.
Reserve
Securing reserve in the heifer section was Brian and Shelia Yates, Castle Douglas with their Holstein heifer, Logan Goldsun Belle 2 VG87. Calving February and due in the same month next year, it sired by Toc-Farm Goldsun and out of the VG89 Logan Alexander Belle. It was first at the recent Castle Douglas Night Show and second at Dumfries.
