US judge for the Guernseys at International Dairy Week Carla Stetzer had done her homework before she hit Australian soil.
Carla said she had looked back on former years and results to get her bearings on what to expect Down Under. And she wasn’t disappointed.
“I guess I wasn’t knowing what to expect when I first got the invitation,” Carla said. “But I had looked at some previous results and I knew there were three really prominent breeders here in Australia and I knew there’d be some really good cows out here.
“To me, the quality was similar to some of the state fairs I’ve judged back home except the quality was deeper here all the way through to the bottom of the classes. These classes were really complete.
Her Junior Champion was Endeavour-VG Pilot Delight, exhibited by Tyson and Simone Shea, at Bacchus Marsh, Victoria. Sired by Lindrian Grumpy Pilot, Carla, said Delight’s exceptional feet and legs took her all the way.
“She tracks out so straight,” Carla said. “And I love the chine, the front end and the length of neck on this heifer. She’s so dairy and clean-boned. But I’m taking nothing away from Reserve Junior Champion – it was just that advantage on those feet and legs.”
The Intermediate Champion ‘blew the doors off’ for judge Carla. She said the extreme young cow had too much width throughout and her mammary system could not be denied.
The Senior Champion again fell to the Shea partnership with their aged cow entry, First Love Pearly. The eight-year-old helped make the Premier Exhibitor award a tight finish, but it was to be Daniel Clarke, who won the Exhibitor banner. And Brookleigh Guernseys took home Premier Breeder.
