Loss represents about 50 per cent of milking herd

A dairy farm in Green Oaks, in Nova Scotia’s Colchester County, lost 140 cows in a massive barn fire that broke out Monday morning.

The loss represents about 50 per cent of the herd at Green Oaks Dairy Farm, said Todd Mills, fire chief with the Cobequid District Fire Brigade.

Firefighters from eight departments were called to the commercial dairy barn, about 20 kilometres south of Truro, shortly around 9:15 a.m. The fire marshal is investigating the cause of the blaze.

“The fire marshal should be out there today and the insurance people,” Mills said Tuesday.

The milking herd didn’t make it out of the barn, which collapsed in the flames. Heifers that were in a separate area survived. Family members and friends were at the scene Monday to provide support to the dairy farm’s owners.

The structure of the barn and steel roof made it difficult for crews to attack the flames underneath, one firefighter said.
