Dairy farmer crushed by tractor ‘after dog jumped into the cab and set it moving’

A tragic tractor accident has claimed the life a well known dairy farmer in the UK.

The Daily Mail reports that dairy farmer died after he was crushed by his own tractor set in motion when a dog jumped in its cab.

It reports that businessman and farmer Derek Mead, 70, is understood to have suffered a fatal heart attack after the tragic accident on his farm in Hewish, near Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset, on Sunday.

It is believed Mr Mead was crushed by a JCB farm loader, a machine used to transport heavy materials, after a dog caused the vehicle to start.

However, this has not been confirmed by the authorities.

Paramedics battled to save the father of three but were unsuccessful.

The Mead family, who have been farming in Somerset since the 1400s, described the death as a ‘terrible loss’.

Mead was well known in the UK farming sector having famously resigned from the National Farmers’ Union in protest at what he said was its failure to support dairy farmers.

Mead had three dairy herds across 2,000 acres of land in Somerset with his son Alistair.
