Abbotsford barn fire

A major fire in Abbotsford, BC, Canada has destroyed a dairy barn, but dozens of cattle inside were rescued and are being taken care of by neighbours.

Tony Vanderwal, the farm’s founder says he believes all but one of the cows were saved.

He says the farm operation consists of 500 cattle, 200 of them dairy cows which must be fed and milked every day.

Dozens of cows from the farm were pastured in a nearby field immediately following the fire, but the farming community has come together and neighbouring farmers are putting them up in their own barns for now said Vanderwal.

The fire broke out at Tolmie and Number 2 Road shortly after 6:30 a.m. PT  Sunday. Fire crews also had to deal with a number of smaller brush fires.

At its height thick smoke could be seen billowing over neighbouring fields from several kilometres away.
