The community in Buckingham County came together to support a well-known hoof trimmer who is battling lung cancer.
The Kick Cancer fundraiser was held at Alvis Farms near Scottsville for Ray Smith on Saturday.
Smith was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in May, and is now going through a cocktail of chemotherapy.
Smith has earned a big reputation across Virginia and North Carolina, and is thankful for the support.
“I never thought this thing would have gotten this big with the amount of sponsors and the amount of people showing up,” said Smith. “It’s just good people wanting to do good things.”
“The money is great for Ray, but also the emotional support means so much to him because he has a battle ahead of him,” said Bom Harris, an organizer.
Harris said the goal was to raise $10,000, which was already met by the beginning of Saturday’s event.
