2016 All-Canadian Red & Whites

The Holstein Journal is proud to announce the results of the 2016 All-Canadian Red & White Holstein contest in this issue. This is the tenth year that the Holstein Journal has sponsored and conducted the All-Canadian Red & White competition which recognizes the achievements of Red & White Holsteins who have competed at shows in Canada.

Meadow Green Abso Fanny-Red-ET

For the second year in a row, the unanimous choice for All-Canadian in the Senior Cow class is Meadow Green Abso Fanny-Red-ET, the “Absolute” daughter who captured grand champion honours at the National Red & White Holstein Show at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in 2016. Heatherstone Redhot-Red, who was reserve grand champion at the Royal’s Red & White Show, was the unanimous pick for All-Canadian in the Junior Cows. Redhot is the first milking female to win an award in both the All-Canadian Red & White and All-Canadian Holstein contests. In 2016, the Holstein Journal changed its rules and allowed Red & White Holsteins who qualified for both the Red & White and Holstein All-Canadian competitions to enter both contests. Previously Red & White animals, with the exception of 4-H animals, were permitted to enter in only one competition, not both, in the same year. Redhot was submitted for both competitions and was well rewarded for her efforts earning an Honourable Mention All-Canadian junior 2-year-old award in the Holstein contest and now finishing at the top of her class in the Red & Whites.

The All-Canadian Selection Committee was very consistent this year when casting their ballots. In addition to the unanimous All-Canadians in the two cow classes, the All-Canadian winners in the Yearling Heifers and Heifer Calves were just one vote shy of being acclaimed. The Reserve in the Yearling Heifers was also unanimous. The closest race for Reserve and Honourable Mention came in the Senior Cows where just one point eventually separated the pair.

Far and away the leading exhibitor of All-Canadian Red & Whites in 2016 is MilkSource Genetics of Kaukauna, Wis. They have previously achieved this title in 2009, 2011 and 2012. MilkSource had five animals, two of whom they showed for just part of the year, finish in the top three of their classes. These entries went on to secure an impressive one All-Canadian, two Reserves and two Honourable Mentions for this accomplished American exhibitor who has been a prominent exhibitor at the Royal Winter Fair for several years. In the Junior Cow class, MilkSource’s name appears as an exhibitor on all three of the award winners.

While there is no clear-cut leading breeder or runner-up for exhibitor, based on the rules and point formula we use to determine these designations, there are several showmen who certainly have much to be excited about. Westcoast Holsteins, Chilliwack, B.C., exhibited two animals for part of the year who are now All-Canadian title holders. At the Sale of Stars last November, they also purchased the junior champion from the Royal’s Red & White Show, Willow-Marsh Moulnrouge-Red, and she too has now been declared All-Canadian in the Yearling Heifers. Frank A. & Diane Borba, Modesto, Calif., are partners in one All-Canadian and one Reserve, while Lookout Holsteins, Canton-de-Hatley, Que., are co-owners in two Reserve All-Canadians.

When it comes to leading sire, Apples Absolute-Red-ET is way out in front siring two All-Canadians (Senior Cow and Heifer Calf) and one Reserve (Heifer Calf). “Absolute” has been Premier Sire of the Royal’s Red & White Show the last two years and in 2016 was also Premier Sire at World Dairy Expo’s International Red & White Show in Madison, Wis. Ten different bulls sired a top three finisher in this latest Red & White contest.

In all, 34 entries were submitted for the 2016 competition representing exhibitors from three Canadian provinces, seven states of the United States, and France. There is no nomination process in the All-Canadian Red & White contest. To be eligible for an entry, an animal must simply have competed in a Holstein Canada recognized Red & White Show and/or Holstein Show during the latest show season. Only those exhibitors who have an animal chosen as All-Canadian, Reserve or Honourable Mention are required to pay an entry fee. That entry fee can be applied as a credit towards an advertisement in this issue. The Junior Cow class (milking yearlings, junior and senior 2-year-olds, and junior and senior 3-year-olds) attracted the largest number of entries with 14. The Heifer Calves (summer, junior, intermediate and senior calves) had nine entries, followed by the Yearling Heifers (summer, junior and intermediate yearlings) with six, and then the Senior Cows (4-year-olds, 5-year-olds, mature cows, and longtime production) with five.

In early January, the Holstein Journal sent pages of pictures and show placings for the Red & White entrants to ten judges who comprised the 2016 All-Canadian Selection Committee. They were: John Buckley, Lindsay, Ont.; Marc Charpentier, Victoriaville, Que.; Gerald Coughlin Jr., Peterborough, Ont.; Jeff Donohoe, Petersfield, Man.; Dominic Fortier, Saint-Christophe-d’Arthabaska, Que.; Jocelyn Nault, Tingwick, Que.; Mark Rueth, Oxford, Wis.; Orville Schmidt, Leduc County, Alta.; Jeff Stephens, Troy, Ont.; and Nathan Thomas, North Lewisburg, Ohio.

These judges, by means of a ballot vote, indicated their choice for first, second and third place in each class. No judge was permitted to vote in a class in which an animal he bred or owned was entered. With the exception of Judge Thomas, who was not eligible to vote in the Senior Cows, all other judges cast ballots in every class. A first place vote was worth 7 points, a second 3 points, and a third 1 point. The animal with the highest point total is declared All-Canadian, second highest is Reserve, and third highest is Honourable Mention. A breakdown of the vote for the top three finishing animals in each class is found here: All-Canadian Red & White Vote. Other animals who received votes, but did not finish in the top three, do not appear on this list. This will explain the variation in number of ballots seen in each class.

The Holstein Journal extends thanks to all of the exhibitors who supported Red & White shows and the All-Canadian Red & White contest in 2016. Congratulations to the winners!
