2016 All-Canadian Holstein Nominations

We wrap up another outstanding Canadian show season with the announcement of the nominations in the 2016 All-Canadian Holstein contest. This is the 75th year the Holstein Journal has proudly sponsored this contest which recognizes the best Holsteins who have competed in shows in this country. Originally established in 1942 as a war time substitute for a national show, the All-Canadian competition remains a respected and coveted honour by Holstein exhibitors.

The 2016 All-Canadian Holstein contest attracted 153 entries in the open individual classes. This year marked the addition of a “longtime production” class to the competition for cows who have produced 60,000 kg milk or more lifetime, and the cancellation of the senior yearling class. Ninety cows were entered in the nine milking classes with entry numbers ranging from seven in the longtime production to 12 in the 4-year-olds. There were 63 entrants in the six junior female classes. Numbers there ranged from eight in the intermediate yearlings to a high of 13 in the junior calf class, which also included entries from five summer calves. We had superb participation in the group classes. Eleven entries vied for a nomination in the Breeder’s Herd class, while there were 12 Junior Breeder’s Herds entered. The final list of nominees represents exhibitors from seven Canadian provinces – Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia – plus 14 states in the United States, Italy, France and Australia.

The five All-Canadian 4-H classes were again well supported with 46 entries submitted by 4-H members in Ontario, Quebec, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. The largest 4-H class was the senior calves at 12, while the smallest were the summer yearlings and junior yearlings at eight apiece.

Selecting the “six best animals or groups” for a nomination in each of the 22 All-Canadian classes were Yvon Chabot, Victoriaville, Que., Gerald Coughlin Jr., Peterborough, Ont., Joël Lepage, Amqui, Que., and Carl Phoenix, Sunderland, Ont., who comprised the Nominating Committee. These four respected cowmen and Official Judges judged major shows across Canada this past season, and have shown or been at ringside at many more. Meeting in the Holstein Journal’s Richmond Hill, Ont., office on December 1st, they were like-minded and worked extremely well together as they evaluated and assessed the show placings, pictures and animals presented before them. It was not always easy, with the junior yearlings and junior 2-year-olds taking extra time to reach a conclusion.

For the second year in a row, MilkSource Genetics is the leading exhibitor of All-Canadian nominees. This caps off another great year for this Kaukauna, Wis., based farm who was also Premier Exhibitor at the Royal Winter Fair’s National Holstein Show and World Dairy Expo’s International Holstein Show. MilkSource had seven cows, two of these shown for just part of the year, nominated for All-Canadian in 2016. Five of these cows were bred in Canada.

Far out in front as the leading breeder of All-Canadian nominees, and placing second for exhibitor, is Ferme Jacobs Inc., Cap-Sante, Que. A total of eight animals in the contest carry the respected Jacobs prefix, all but one coming in the milking classes. The Jacobs family also picked up nominations for their Breeder’s Herd and Junior Breeder’s Herd. A three-time Master Breeder winner, Ferme Jacobs was previously leading breeder of All-Canadian nominees in 2013 and 2014.

Third leading exhibitor of All-Canadian nominees is the partnership of Budjon Farms, Lomira, Wis., and Peter & Lyn Vail, Valatie, N.Y., with all or part of five nominations, while Westcoast Holsteins, Chilliwack, B.C., takes fourth place with all or part of five nominations as well. Ferme Jacobs is followed in the breeder category by the prefixes of Comestar, Kingsway and Petitclerc which appear on three animals apiece. Six prefixes – Gendarra, Loyalyn, Milksource, Mount Elm, Vertdor and Wendon – appear twice in the competition. In the 4-H classes, Kingsway Farms, Hastings, Ont., dominates the breeder list with four nominees carrying the Kingsway prefix.

Forty different bulls sired a nominee in the open competition. Finishing on top as the leading sire of All-Canadian nominees once again is the legendary Braedale Goldwyn from Semex. He had 17 daughters, 14 cows and three heifers, nominated in 2016. “Goldwyn” has been the top sire nine out of the last ten years. Giving “Goldwyn” a good run, but having to settle for second place, is Val-Bisson Doorman. He had 15 daughters, four cows and 11 heifers, nominated. Tying for third place, with five nominated daughters each, were Gillette Windbrook and Maple-Downs-I G W Atwood. They are followed by Pine-Tree Sid-ET with four nominations, and then De-Su BKM McCutchen 1174-ET and Lirr Drew Dempsey who each have three. The most popular sire in the 4-H classes was “Doorman” with seven daughters, followed by Walnutlawn Solomon with four.

Advance copies of the nomination pages were sent to 20 judges in early December. They will serve as the All-Canadian Selection Committee. Their votes will determine the winners of the All-Canadian, Reserve and Honourable Mention awards in each class. Serving on the All-Canadian Selection Committee are the four members of the Nominating Committee, along with: Jamie Black, Constable, N.Y.; Pierre Boulet, Montmagny, Que.; John Buckley, Lindsay, Ont.; Marc Comtois, Victoriaville, Que.; Pat Conroy, Angola, Ind.; Brian Craswell, Hunter River, P.E.I.; Michael Farlinger, Morrisburg, Ont.; Dominic Fortier, Saint Christophe-d’Arthabaska, Que.; Michael Heath, Westminster, Md.; Thierry Jaton, Compton, Que.; Yan Jacobs, Cap-Sante, Que.; Carl Saucier, Champlain, Que.; Orville Schmidt, Leduc County, Alta.; Jeff Stephens, Troy, Ont.; Nathan Thomas, North Lewisburg, Ohio; and Blair Weeks, Pleasant Valley, P.E.I. The results of the All-Canadian Holstein contest will appear in the February Holstein Journal.

Congratulations to all of the exhibitors who earned a nomination in the All-Canadian Holstein contest!
