16th Annual Junior Show held in Woodstock, Ontario

The weather was perfect for the annual Jr Show held at the Outdoor Farmshow site in Woodstock. 74 participants made the long trek up the hill to the show barn for another exciting year of competition.

As in past years, another great group of youngsters under the age of 14 descended upon the Outdoor Farm show site in Woodstock to diligently prepare their 4-H project and set up their club exhibit area prior to a great day of showing.

Once settled in, the first day included workshops on how to wash and feed your show animal, preparation of a bedding pack, and a hands on session with a fitter. We were also fortunate to have Nutritionist from Purina present to discuss how to feed your show calf.

We were pleased to have past participants return as fitters for the show working with each 4-H’er to clip their animal, while others assisted in putting together a fun program for the entire group. The educational portion of the day finished off with Doug Karn conducting a showmanship clinic for all in attendance.

The final day of the event was the much anticipated show. Judge Morgan McMillan from Kingsway Holsteins, handily evaluated the 74 exhibitors while taking time to interact with each one of them! The day began with the Sr. and Jr. Showmanship competition, followed by the conformation classes. First place Senior and Grand Champion Showman went to Dani Karn of Oxford and second place Senior and Honourable Mention went to Keeton Jones of Oxford County. The winner of the Junior Showmanship and Reserve Champion was Alicia Bastiaansen from Oxford while second Junior went to Emma Lewis also from Middlesex County.

Grand Champion calf was a Summer Yearling entry for Keeton Jones of Oxford with Joren Nevada Gizmo. Reserve also went to Oxford county for Emily Smith with the winner of the Jr. Calf class, Smithden Hilton Viola. Honourable Mention was won by Sam Barnes of Lambton County with Barcrest Deautiful Rose the class winner of the Intermediate calves.

It was a great pleasure for Western Ontario to host a group of young people from Sudbury and allow them to compete with our 4-H’ers. These were a terrific group and we were so pleased when Jacob Campbell from that contingent was chosen as the recipient of the show box, which is a highlight of our event. As always we would like to thank and honour our major sponsor of the event, Bruce Witmer and it was wonderful to have him on hand to make the presentations to the winners of the day. Thank you also to the Outdoor Farmshow staff for their continued support of our program.

All participants received prizes provided by the sponsors leaving no one empty handed from the day. Thank you again to all the participants, parents, leaders, committee members and sponsors that assisted in again making this show a great success.
