Reese Burdette Update September 1st

11902312_927722970607935_720492723998737907_n[1]Reese’s aunt Laura shares the following update:

The end of summer is here and Fall is just around the corner…a favorite time of year for so many of us. Reese has had a tremendous summer thanks to many of you. The visits from her friends and classmates has been the best part so it is hard, now, with school back in session to not see her friends on a daily basis. We hope many of you will continue to fill her weekends with visits from friends. Let’s begin our update with the news that she is finally over that terrible blood infection!! It took a while and a few antibiotics but Reese finally kicked that infection to the curb with the help of the doctors and staff at Hopkins. Reese had gotten pretty ill with this infection but she pushed through it just like she always does. In therapy, Reese is taking off! She has been able to walk without the assistance of her walker and now just uses a parent or nurse for balance!!! This is HUGE! She is so incredibly strong and it is quite the site to see! The biggest change that I see in her as of late is in the little things – Reese has always needed someone else to help “boost” her when she was slumping down in a chair, or needed someone else to help her move to the edge of the chair…now, she can shimmy herself to the side to get herself more comfortable. Or she can lean forward and hold herself without the help from someone else. She has really gotten so much more independent with the little things that you and I all take for granted. Her core strength is super strong and she is realizing that now. The team is also now able to wean the VAD (small baby steps each time) and her right heart is very accepting of this thus far – another HUGE step in the right direction. Keep praying for these things to continue. Reese was fortunate enough to meet two fellow amputees a few short weeks ago. One was a 17 years old and one a 9 year old. Reese didn’t ask many questions but we know it helped her to meet these two people and see that things will be just fine for her in the future. We truly hope she will have the opportunity to meet others like this so she can ask the things that weigh on her. I am sure most of you saw that Reese has a little snow-cone business now – selling snow cones most days for $0.50! The first day she was open she made roughly $20! She was one excited little girl and I can’t help but think that the nurses and doctors supporting her cause loved their little afternoon wet treat! Reese will be transferring her snow-cone business to popcorn for the Fall! And for all of you dairy farmer…she said “We have to use real butter on my popcorn!!” A true dairy farmer and dairy farmer’s daughter at heart! Reese will have a minor surgery/procedure on Tuesday morning to replace her central line. While this should be a routine procedure, the current line in her is quite old so we hope for no hiccups and smooth sailing…extra prayers much appreciated this day. The next two weeks, Reese’s doctor and team plan to push Reese and see what she is capable of (to see what her lungs can handle). We all know she is strong and the doctors and team plan to push her and see for themselves these next 2 weeks too. Please pray that Reese can be pushed and that she handles all of this. It is quite possible she could make huge leaps these next 2 weeks. Pray for Reese, pray for her doctor who will be watching over her, pray for her nurses and therapist who sit with her and comfort her and assist her.
As always, our family wishes to thank all of those that continue to support us all. Reese still loves her cards and small gifts and it amazes us all that you still send them – but thank you! Thanks for continuing to lift us all in prayer. Thanks for always asking about Mom – who is doing good. We do ask that you continue to pray for Reese – pray for her doctors, nurses and therapist who tend to her, love her and walk with her as she mends. Pray for strong and healing lungs. Pray for positive and strong minds. Pray for strength for Reese, Claire and Justin. A truly heartfelt thanks to you all for never turning your backs on this little girl. Thanks for always remembering and for always praying. When know we are all here today because there is such power in prayer. Keep praying, keep hoping and keep fighting!
