Western Canadian Classic to be Held August 26-31

The 2013 Western Canadian Classic will be held August 26-31 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.

The Western Canadian Classic is a junior dairy show and a volunteer based organization founded by dairy farmers from the four western provinces. It provides an opportunity for 4-H youth from 12-21 years of age to compete in an annual interprovincial program.  WCC was initiated 29 years ago and has developed a great reputation for high quality competition among enthusiastic dairy youth.

The WCC is open to all dairy breeds, but is predominantly Holstein with a smaller number of Jersey animals shown. The program provides an opportunity for dairy youth to compete and develop skills that will serve them not only in their future agribusiness careers, but within any field of work they may pursue.  Skills gained by participating in WCC include leadership, teamwork, citizenship, public speaking, agriculture/dairy science, dairy judging, cattle fitting, and showmanship.

Each of the participants is expected to work as a team and provide husbandry skills for the animals in the team’s care during a week long program. The animals and display area are set up at the beginning of the week incorporating the theme of choice of the host province. This area must be maintained for public viewing and each team member is expected to act as an ambassador for their province and represent their province in the highest of standards.

Prior to the actual show, WCC volunteers work with the participants to improve their skills in the many areas of the program. These seminars, workshops, and judging days are open to all 4-H members to enhance knowledge and skills in the areas of the WCC program.  It is a goal of the WCC to try to have representation from as many 4-H clubs as possible as this will enhance the level of knowledge within the clubs.

As a result of participation in the WCC program, we have seen many youth go on to be employed in the dairy and agribusiness industry not only in Canada, but worldwide.  It is truly a great youth program for the dairy industry and community.
